But the poster of the original comment was assuming that just because Leona had written two albums on her own ... that that alone was testament to her song-writing talents.

What I meant was the fact that she has written two albums, so you can't just sit there and say she can't write lyrics. I love the albums, they're not amazing, but she was a lot younger back then. She has grown as a musician, and has said she's been writing music since she was younger.

HAHAHHAHA I love this discussion

Leona is more successful than Will Young. period. Though she had a hard time in the US with "Happy", she will always sell here.

He is a great artist, though, and just needs to get away from the sound he has been attached to. And no one should question his credentials as his album sales are impressive (5 platinum/multi-platinum albums).

Having said that, it is interesting how only those two and Girls Aloud have survived from the reality show period of 2001-2007.

I don't mean that at all ... I appreciate that there are albums that are of great quality and don't make it in the charts. The son of a really good friend of mine has written a good album of songs ... just put it on cd's for friends, etc ... and that will probably never be picked up by a record label ... but some of it is easily as good as most of the top 40 at the moment. But the poster of the original comment was assuming that just because Leona had written two albums on her own ... that that alone was testament to her song-writing talents. It isn't. I mean ... I've written a book ... for my own pleasure (mainly diaries with funny anecdotes, etc) it doesn't make me Charles Dickens.

Oh ok, i think i got the wrong end of the stick there then

I therefore assume you were asking about her chart positions as a seperate topic then :)

How?

Will's overall sales are higher & he's been around longer, though I agree Girls Aloud like Will are proving to have longevity.

Sorry i just assumed GA had higher total sales. But still they've still had 20 consecutive top 10 hits and 6 platinum albums which is extremely impressive. :D I think Girls Aloud had more odds against them tbh. Girl groups weren't traditionally popular in talent shows and although they were put together in the competition, they still beat a boyband that girls would have drooled over.

I'm not knocking GA's achievements they make really catchy pop music but I don't agree with you there. Will as an openly gay male pop star, starting his career with a record label boss that made it very plain he thought it was a mistake that he won, has had a much tougher ride with the media. Just now after 8 years he is gaining some credibility for all his hard work. He is now readily accepted on the festival circuit yet is still overlooked for a Brits performance. Still he said at the start of his career it wasn't about the money or being famous but sticking around & he's managed it when so many others not only from talent shows are long gone.

Anyway I'll shut up now. I've enjoyed the discussion but seem to be hogging the thread.

I don't think being openly gay is a disadvantage in the music industry though. It actually makes it easier to build a strong fanbase - with the gay community surely. Or am i wrong? George Michael has been successful post coming out. I don't know how he's had a tough ride with the media as well. He's no Kerry, Heather or Britney in that sense. They are examples of how bitchy and inhumane the media can be.

But anyway, maybe they are both extremely successful in different ways. They were both against the odds and showed potential. Will is definitely more of an artist than GA but GA have received more coverage and exposure.

I'm not sure if there be any sales info in the Sun newspaper for HH, I don't own a copy today, since the Sun is supporting the charity single.

Yep, hope so too :) At this rate though, if it drops at all this week I'll be Happy ;)

Isn't there a Sun website? :P

I'm sure the website might have an update. Most of the stuff in the paper can be found online.

I'd estimate a total of 285,000 for HH so far. If it sold 205,000 copies in 2 days. Sales will be slightly dying down.

I think it would be quite nice not knowing for once actually. Then the anticipation would be high.

If Leona does write her own songs, then she needs to try writing different other than just a ballad (or do more of it), I actually forgot about GA, they would certainly be up there too

I think GA should quit now. The chances of coming back AGAIN with great stuff is very small. They should not tarnish their crown like Sugababes have been doing.

This is what i don't understand. Why should Leona have to write something different. I'm a lyricist and have written over around a thousand songs and 90% of them are ballads. It's just what you are comfortable with and if Leona finds it easier to reflect the inspiration and her emotions by writing a ballad then so be it. She shouldn't have to be told what to write. She should do what comes naturally.

Writing a ballad is far harder anyway. With up-tempos, you have lot's of music as a support and therefore aren't pressured into writing great lyrics. With ballads however, the flaws in the writing can easily show because the audience will most likely remember the lyrics. Ballads need to show depth and convey emotion, which Leona does to an unbelievably incredible extent.
