Cowell Haiti single over 200,000 sales

Singles

Simon Cowell’s charity single for Haiti is on course to achieve one of the biggest first-week sales this century, with around 205,000 copies sold of Everybody Hurts in just two days.

The Syco-issued cover of the REM classic, which features acts including Susan Boyle, Michael Buble, Cheryl Cole and Leona Lewis under the collective name Helping Haiti, is comfortably outselling the rest of the Top 20 combined, according to OCC sales figures.

It will now be a question of just how many copies it will end up selling before the chart week ends at the close of business this Saturday, with the only chart battle now left to determine being who will occupy the runners-up position on the countdown.

Island’s Owl City with Fireflies, which spent a third week at number one last Sunday, is the week’s second biggest seller so far with a sale that is less than one-tenth of that of Everybody Hurts. Timabland featuring Katy Perry’s Interscope/Polydor-issued If We Ever Meet Again, which moved up to three on last Sunday’s chart, is the week’s third top seller, while J/RCA’s Alicia Keys with Empire State Of Mind (Part II) and the Epic-issued Don’t Stop Believin’ by Glee Cast completing the top five.

Albums

While the race is over on singles, a close battle for top spot is playing out on the artists albums chart between two long-established UK acts with newly-issued albums. Virgin’s Massive Attack are ahead at present with Heligoland as they seek their third number one on the chart, but they are fewer than 2,000 sales ahead of Sade’s new RCA album Soldier Of Love. Sade has only topped the chart once before, back in November 1985 with Promise.

Alicia Keys’ J/RCA album The Element Of Freedom, which gave her a first number one on last Sunday’s chart, is the third biggest seller at this early stage of the week, but is itself fewer than 1,000 sales behind Sade. The closeness of the week’s biggest sellers is further emphasised by Decca’s Andre Rieu with Forever Vienna and Atlantic’s Paolo Nutnin with Sunny Side Up, the fourth and fifth top sellers of the week so far, both only a few thousand sales off the number one position.

There is plenty of new release activity outside the Top 10 with entries expected from Deutsche Grammophon’s Rolando Villazon, Warner Bros’s Him, Gil Scott-Heron with his XL debut I’m New Here and Sony’s Barry Manilow and Virgin’s UB40 with Valentine’s Day-targeted sets.

Haiti single 'sells 150,000 in two days'

Tuesday, February 9 2010, 09:28 GMT

Simon Cowell's 'Helping Haiti' charity single has reportedly sold 150,000 copies in its first two days of release.

The track, a cover of REM's 1992 hit 'Everybody Hurts', is currently outselling its nearest chart rival by four to one.

The single was given a global release on February 8 and is on course to end Owl City's five-week reign at the top of the UK charts with 'Fireflies'.

"For it to sell over 100,000 copies in a day or two underlines once again the generosity of the UK and Irish public when called upon to help others," HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said.

Music retailers have been stocking the single at £3.99 and it is available as a download for 99p. Half the proceeds will go to The Sun's Helping Haiti fund and the other half to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC).

The song features a lineup of 21 artists, including Leona Lewis, Rod Stewart, Mariah Carey, Cheryl Cole, Susan Boyle, Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams.

According to music industry experts, sales are expected to top one million and the song could become the best-selling single of the past ten years.

.

Massive sales this week then - probably around 450k as its gonna sell a hell of a lot of physicals in addition to its downloads.

fuc.k me, sales are going to go through the roof, over 500k, it will pass a million this time next week  Surely it be the quickest single to pass the million mark. :o

Somehow I don't think it will.

Must be just me as I was actually expecting more. Now we are in the download age.

150k isn't that much, is it? Or is that just physicals or just downloads?

Cheryl sold 134k in two days and ended up with 292k

I wish that those 150,000 people had just given money to Haiti anyway.

Cheryl's sales were almost entirely downloads, and the multiplier for them from Tuesday mids->Sunday sales for new releases is usually x2.0-2.5, Cheryl's was 2.17 probably due to the X Factor performance.

The Haiti single will have strong physicals sales - likely to be 50% or above, and the multiplier for them remains as it used to be - x3.0-3.5.

I think it will push around 450k.

I doubt any article that cant even get simple facts right. As somebody already pointed out in regards to Owl City's reign at #1.

I'm not one for being pedantic and nitpicky but surely the r*t**** can look up the facts with a click of Google before writing these things? :/
