March 21, 201015 yr She would get on well with this idiot http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/...US-general.html A former American general blamed "open homosexuality" in the Dutch army for the failure to prevent the Srebrenica massacre in 1995. The Dutch government condemned the comments by Gen John Sheehan, a former Nato commander and senior marine officer, as outrageous. Gen Sheehan made the remarks at a Senate hearing where he argued against plans by President Barack Obama to end a ban on allowing gays to serve openly in the US military. Gen Sheehan said that after the end of the Cold War, European militaries changed and concluded "there was no longer a need for an active combat capability." He said this process included "open homosexuality" which resulted in "a focus on peacekeeping operations because they did not believe the Germans were going to attack again or the Soviets were coming back." "The case in point that I'm referring to is when the Dutch were required to defend Srebrenica against the Serbs," he said, referring to the UN peacekeeping force deployed to protect Bosnian Muslim civilians. "The battalion was understrength, poorly led, and the Serbs came into town, handcuffed the soldiers to the telephone poles, marched the Muslims off and executed them." Carl Levin, the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, pressed him to clarify his comments. "Did the Dutch leaders tell you it (the fall of Srebrenica) was because there were gay soldiers there?" asked an incredulous Levin. "Yes," Sheehan said and added: "They included that as part of the problem." It's no great surprise that former American generals hold such bigoted views. It's rather more surprising that they are prepared to go public with their moronic bigotry.
March 21, 201015 yr I obviously agree with everyone who said that, as this is a B&B, she can't really pick and choose who stays. (though part of me did think B&Bs had this right!) I'd say they have a certain say. For example, if the person is abusive then they'd have the right to refuse entry onto their premises. But it's refusal of entry based on sexual orientation or any other genetic makeup or ideological/religious beliefs which is prohibited under EU law.

March 21, 201015 yr There's always people like this in every era. I'm sure there were times when black people were turned away from b&bs. I'd like to book a room there. Sneak someone in and film some "adult" entertainment and then send her a dvd of it. - edit - sorry I hadn't seen BA Baracus' post Edited March 21, 201015 yr by tonyttt31

She could just have said, when she realised they were gay "sorry but here's your deposit. The room has a leaking pipe now so can't be let today" She needn't have mentioned them being gay and would have kept herself within the law. ;)
March 22, 201015 yr She should be prosecuted to set an example... it's a business not a lodger situation.
March 22, 201015 yr The point has already been made, but it bears repeating... as long as she is accepting payment for a service, she is participating in a regulated market that falls under UK law... anti-discrimination laws apply, and she should be prosecuted. She could just have said, when she realised they were gay "sorry but here's your deposit. More difficult to prove/prosecute, yes. But let's be clear that it would still be discrimination. Edited March 22, 201015 yr by Consie
March 22, 201015 yr as several have already said .... she is running a business, so its NOT a private house, the LAW states that discrimination on grounds of race or sex is ILLEGAL, therefore she has broke the law and should be prosecuted.

How is not putting guests in a wet room against the law? No-one could check it or prove or disprove it. I know a woman who has a business and she doesn't employ anyone who isn't white but she doesn't give that as the reason. She just says they're not suitable. ;) You'll never put an end to homophobia however much gays want it to end. A guy on the very long DS thread about this last night said he'd do exactly the same as her. No it wasn't me. I'd be glad to have their custom as most would be I think! If I push someone off a balcony but tell the police they fell off, I am not "within the law" just because I lied.

I just wrote a long rant against this post. I did however change it. But, you are merely a troll who posts crap for a reaction, so you do not deserve my wrath.
March 22, 201015 yr Strange. I began to do exactly the same thing earlier but then stopped for the same reasons.
March 22, 201015 yr Author I just wrote a long rant against this post. I did however change it. But, you are merely a troll who posts crap for a reaction, so you do not deserve my wrath. Well I can't see anything wrong in my post. I said you'll never completely get rid of homophobia and anyone who thinks you will is deluding themselves. I also said I wouldn't have barred these two men like she did. Please someone tell me what was wrong with my post. Edited March 22, 201015 yr by Victor Meldrew
March 22, 201015 yr While we're on this subject, I must admit that I do get worried that my partner & I will get turned away when we stay in smaller hotels or B&Bs. I dare say there will never be a problem but I do tend to make sure that there are alternatives in the same area just in case something like this was to happen. Edited March 22, 201015 yr by Dandy*
March 22, 201015 yr Author How does a B&B owner know you are two gay men though? You could be sharing a twin-bedded room as friends or business associates, to save single supplements. I'm still a bit puzzled as to how she knew it was a gay couple even before they got out of the car.

I dare say there will never be a problem but I do tend to make sure that there are alternatives in the same area just in case something like this was to happen. I can understand that - its like a silent unknown menace. I have never had a bad reaction from anyone for being gay, but I am always wary in new situations with new people.
March 22, 201015 yr Chris/Victor, I assume the room was a double and not a twin? Edited March 22, 201015 yr by Dandy*

Does that mean we shouldn't bother trying to reduce the number of rapes and murders?

March 22, 201015 yr Author Chris/Victor, I assume the room was a double and not a twin? I don't know. Probably so that's why she took that stance when she saw two men draw up in a car. Wonder what she'd have done if they booked a twin then? She only has three bedrooms anyway so only a small place. Edited March 22, 201015 yr by Victor Meldrew
