the latest from the big brother/nanny state is a call by a group of doctors suggesting a ban on smoking in cars, especially when theres children in them.

they reckon passive smoking is effecting kids health, and well it might be, but do responsible parents really smoke tf in a closed environment inflicting the passive smoking on their kids?

im not fan of smoking, i welcomed the ban in pubs, but tbh this call by these doctors is going abit far.... itll be the home next.

They should ban people smoking whilst driving and fine them!

It should be up to the parents though to stop smoking for the kids sake. Surely parents should have some common sense and quit full stop.

I've always thought that smoking is a giant white elephant, everyone knows it's massively dangerous but no one dares ban it outright (partly because of the money the tobacco industry makes, partly due to it being a massive vote-loser) so instead they bring in ever-increasing restrictions on where you can and can't do it.

It's widely thought that the money lost from revenue if it was banned would eventually be outweighed by the money saved on the NHS from treating people, so how about this - don't ban it, but instead make regular smokers pay for their treatment on the NHS instead of giving them it for free. Taxpayers money saved and still getting the revenue because it's still legal.

Smoking should be banned everywhere FULL-STOP. It gives people throat and mouth cancer and has absolutely no health-benefits.

....and what are the health benefits drinking 10 units of cider everyday?

If you can't use your mobile while driving, drink or eat why the f*** can you still smoke?

You've only got one hand on the wheel and your concentrating on either flicking the ash out the window or into the ashtray.

Not to mention punting fag buts out the window of your car can cause car fires.

It's a dirty manky disgusting habit, but if they wanna ruin their life's that's their choice, i am very pro-smoking ban as it means i can go to places like a pub and not have to suffer the effects from it and i don't smell like a smoker after :magic:

It doesn't contribute to your 5 a day at all.

I see no problem with people smoking, so long as they don't harm other people through doing so - and also, so long as cigarette tax duties are increased to pay directly for NHS treatment for cancers caused by smoking. Banning smoking completely would be a completely ridiculous move and would probably actually increase tobacco consumption (as is doubtless set to happen with mephedrone, formerly an obscure drug but one which has been thrown into the limelight as being a cheap high which will be further popularised by a ban...) as happened with alcohol consumption during the Prohibition and marijuana consumption after the bans were reinstated in various American states in the 70s...

Although I support the basis of the smoking ban, I do think that smoking areas should be created in pubs (separated from non-smokers areas by doors at least) to offset the downturn in the pub trade since the ban came in...
I've seen someone narrowly avoid what would've been a quite spectacular crash because they were trying to light a fag at the time so I can't say I'm against it...

Not very nice when someone chucks a fag butt out of the window, without stabbing it out first, it can fly through another car's open window. To be honest I hope they enforce the ban. Your hands should be on the wheel full stop.

And they should ban people that pick their noses. Its annoying as hell when they stop at the traffic lights, and decide to shove a finger up their nose while waiting.

Smoking should be banned everywhere FULL-STOP. It gives people throat and mouth cancer and has absolutely no health-benefits.

Anyway, this is a stupid idea. It's someones own decision where they smoke within their personal possesions (houses.. cars.. etc.). And like it has been any mentioned, any normal parent wouldn't smoke in front of their kids in enclosed spaces, especially now that everyone is aware of all the dangers and that.

Anyone who smokes in their car while they have their kids in it, is just plain stupid. These are the same parents that would complain about anything else that might harm their children. I am sure there must be some scientific proof of increased asthma in children with parents who smoke in the house and in cars.

Plus, why do most drivers just flick their fag butts out the window, when they have an astray just next to them. Sheer laziness and showing a total disregard for other road users, the public and the poor council street cleaners.

BRILLIANT idea.... almost as good as mine of only people who have kids should pay any money whatsoever in taxes toward education, anyone who drinks more than a few units a week paying 100% of their medical bills, only people living on main roads should pay anything towards keeping roads snow and pot-hole free, and only people who work for a living receiving ANY healthcare at all.

See? Pretty ridiculous idea.... 'widely thought'? Really? By whom? The same anti-smoking lobbyists who shouted very loudly for a smoking ban in pubs I presume.... who then became known not as the group who stopped smoking in pubs - but as the group who signed the licensing trade's death warrant - because these fervent non smokers sure as hell aint spending their money in pubs these days - as shown by the unprecedented plummet in the numbers of people going to pubs these days. And before we roll out the 'ah, but booze is cheap in supermarkets now, people drink at home"... booze has ALWAYS been cheap in supermarkets.... the cold hard fact is that smokers, and smoker's friends, fored the majority number in most pubs - and these days they're choosing not to stop smoking in public or altogether - they're choosing to stay at home - houseparties are the new pubs thanks to the smoking ban.

Whether you like it or not, smokers help keep the economy alive, and we pay tenfold for the services we use from the NHS. If everyone in the land stopped smoking - don't you realise the Chancellorwill be clawing the billions lost from YOU? Any way he can?

Ban smoking in cars? Go ahead... just don't expect any smokers, including myself, taking a blind bit of notice. As if - my car is MY domain

The difference is drinking 10 units of cider doesn't (or at least doesn't in most cases affect anyone around you. Smoking DOES.

Like Brian says, it's ridiculous that parents happily light up and breathe smoke around and into their own children. So I can't say I'm upset by this new rule.

Absolutely agree 100% Russ.. The Nanny State yet again dictating what ADULTS do... Fukk off.... People who make the decision to have kids SHOULD give up smoking, absolutely, anything else is selfish.. But the rest of us who DONT have kids, should not be dictated to, and certainly shouldn't be dictated to with regards to people's own cars, or indeed bars and clubs... I was against the smoking ban in pubs and clubs and considering the fact that non-chain pubs in UK have been closing down every day since the ban, I was right in that opposition... Some day, VERY soon, probably the only pubs you're gonna be seeing in the streets are Wetherspoons, Lloyds, Yates, O'Neills.... What a terrifying thought.....

How will this even work anyway..? How are you gonna be able to tell which cars are likely to be having kids in them and which aren't.. Are motorists gonna have to declare whether or not they have young children, or is it, as I suspect, just going to be a blanket ban that dictates to everyone, regardless of whether they have children or not, and I suppose the Police dont have anything better to do either than harrass motorists, I mean, clearly there aren't enough murders and rapes going on are there...? -_- And, oh the idiot mantra of these people "it's for the little children"... OH FUKK OFF WITH YOUR EMOTIONAL BLACKMAIL!!!! I was fairly regularly around adults who smoked when I was a kid, and didn't get asthma or any other respitory condition. Thing is, growing up where I was in the East Coast of Scotland the environment itself was LESS POLLUTED and CLEANER, so funnily enough, relatively few problems..... I would say there's more evidence to say that the rise in general pollution is probably more responsible for the proliferation of respitory illness in kids in the past 30 years or so...

You know, if smoking is such a big bloody problem, then why dont they actually just come out and have the balls to ban it altogether.... Hmmmmm?? Nah, too much money in it for them.... Hypocrites.... <_<

Years ago, my very wise sociology professor said that there is great danger in creating laws like this, because if you make enough esoteric things illegal, it makes everyone a criminal and it gives the government the right to arrest you whenever they see fit.

That was 20 years ago and it made some sense, but it seems to be happening more and more these days.

I agree that tobacco is harmful and that people should use their judgment when smoking around others, but making smoking in a car illegal is going too far.

Personally, I gave up smoking a few months ago using electronic cigarettes that look and feel like real cigarettes and deliver nicotine through use of water vapor. They seem healthier and don’t smell at all. I use them in my car, but still refrain from using them with the kids around because I don’t want them getting hooked on nicotine in the way I did. I wonder if I got pulled over using one of these what the ruling would be?? (I’m sure there would be a law against it shortly afterward!)

Your Sociology Professor is absolutely correct... "Nu Labor" has actually created something like over 3000 criminal offences since it came into power in 1997 (which is actually even more than the Tories did..), it's now getting to the stage where pretty much EVERYONE in the country can be caught out in an illegal act however unwitting.... People have not become more lawless in the past decade or so, this is an absolute fallacy, they've been criminalised by a Draconian Government who have abused their mandate given to them in trust by the citizens of this country... They have betrayed us in every way possible... I think that when a Government betrays the citizenry to this degree, the citizenry have the moral right to revolt against those in power and take control back from corrupt politicians who have abused the position and power gifted to them, in a true DEMOCRACY, a Govt governs by consent, what we have right now is NOT a Democracy as I see it....

I'm sorry but i think Smoking should be illegal while driving

It's illegal to use a 'hand held mobile device', eat, drink, operate a sat nav etc behind the wheel so why can you still light up and smoke. It's just a big of a 'distraction' as taking a drink. It's ridiculous that i could change the track on my iPod and smoke at the same time while driving and it's perfectly legal, yet i couldn't have a sip of water even out of a bottle with a sports cap.

If you're going to ban trivial things while driving you should ban the f***ing lot or none at all.

[for the record i am in favour of the mobile ban, that has been proven to be quite a large distraction.]

I'm sorry but i think Smoking should be illegal while driving

This.

There's no way you can be in FULL control of your vehicle if you're puffing away, and tapping off the ash :puke:

I'd love to see sat navs banned too, but that will never happen. The amount of people who blindly follow them when they're a bit slow to update on roundabouts and nearly wipe people out is stupid! Road signs are their for a fricking reason!
