09. Only When I Sleep

[#58 in the UK charts, 1997]

(Average score: 7.06)

I am pleased to see this high up. I would not have expected this top 60 smash to feature above the likes of Summer Sunshine or Angel. But it's totally deserving of it's top 10 placing. Dreamy, dark, atmospheric, haunting - it's absolutely wonderful, and Andrea sounds her sultry best.

Now this is more like it. LOVE it :D

Cant believe it flopped so badly in the UK, it's one of their most memorable hits here, all over the radio at the time

Great :D Still sounds brilliant now. Pleased it made the top ten, I still hear it from time to time on the faithful Corrs friendly station Asda FM. It only flopped here I should think because of their low profile status at the time. Had it been re-released after Dreams I'm sure it would have gone top 15 at worst.

I do love how all of The Corrs' videos seem to consist of a big room, a couple of sofas and the odd instrument (and shots of Jim looking semi-menacing obv).

Only When I Sleep is okay, not a favourite though. I'm not a massive fan of their overly live-sounding work.

08. What Can I Do [Original Version]

[#53 in the UK charts, 1998]

(Average score: 7.13)

There are only six songs in this top 8, thanks to the two versions of Runaway and What Can I Do floating about. In this particular case, it's the remix that wins out, as the original falls at #8.

Personally I find it difficult to choose one or the other. This original version has an intimacy and charm that the more polished Tin Tin Out remix can lack. It's very chilled, at times with a mournful sound to it, and it perfectly compliments the mellow video. I especially like the image of Andrea in the bath in the sunset. Random but charming.

The original is far better, but then I am biased since this was the version that got played here. Never heard the remix til several years later. The original has the charm that the remix doesn't have, especially the "doo doo doo" parts. Again, what was the UK thinking at the time? Seriously.

This is further proof that if Only In My Sleep had been re-released it would've gone top10, but probably under some sort of remix.

Personally I'd have favoured a re-issue of Only When I Sleep or I Never Loved You Anyway over the release of So Young. You are right though; the way The Corrs operated at the time, it would most likely have been a remix, possibly quite a ghastly one.

The Corrs singles were bombing in the UK as they were still low-profile, bar selling the occasional album. It was only until after the BBC-aired concert, and Radio 1 adding Dreams to their playlist because it had a dance remix, that The Corrs EVER became an act capable of selling singles.

'What Can I Do' reminds me of Lloyds TSB (I think thatwas the advert.)

'Summer Sunshine' was amazing. Still sounds good today imo. 'Angel' is great too. 'Breathless' or 'Runaway' FTW! :cheer:

07. Runaway [1999 Tin Tin Out Remix]

[#2 in the UK charts, 1999]

And it's the other way around here - Buzzjack rates the original Runaway higher than the more commercially successful remix. Frankly I'm with the majority. The remix is nice and pleasant, but that's IT. It pretty much sapped the feeling and heart out of the song, and turned it into a bland-fest. Still, it's quite strange to think that were it not for the pop behemoth that was Baby One More Time, this would have been a UK #1.

YES! And they used the 'doo doo doo' remix on that too, although with lyrics changed to suit the bank I believe. I do very very very slightly prefer the remixes of both Runaway and What Can I Do to the originals actually, Tin Tin Out were pretty great at making radio mixes (unless they were indeed responsible for the I Never Loved You Anyway remix which was an abomination). I echo Shoat though, that Royal Albert Hall concert completely turned things around for them here - they weren't getting the right promotion/airplay here at all so it's not that the UK hated their singles before Dreams, a lot of people just never had the chance to hear them until that night, and the subsequent Radio 1 support.

For the top 6 I'd hazard a guess to;

1. Breathless

2. Dreams

3. Runaway (original)

4. What Can I Do (Tin Tin Out mix)

5. So Young

6. Radio (how did this get so high :o)

Runaway should be #1 but I'm not sure that the original will be that much more favoured to the remix.

DAMN. Why did i not rate in this...

Probably because i only recognise about 6 of the songs but hey! :P

Summer Sunshine would have got my 11...love it and was surprised it didn't make #1 in the charts. :( Dissapointed to see it only come 10th (technically 8th) in this too. :(

Surprised it didn't make #1 :o I was surprised it managed to crack the top 10, and even more shocked when the album went in at #2! I thought interest in them had long died down at that point.

Well it was by far my favourite song out at that point and i though..."hmmm. The Corrs are pretty big aren't they? Maybe it'll make #1". :P Obviously the hype for the Frankee-Eamon thing hadn't died down by that point! :(

Still, it manages to be the only Corrs song i properly love to this day. :)

And dittoing Jonjo...What Can I Do? ALWAYS reminds be of Lloyds. :P They were seperate at that point afaik... :P

After a consecutive runs of top 10 smashes, it was a small disappointment when this limped into the top 20, although in hindsight I guess it wasn't so bad - how many live performances get into the charts? This was a decent showcase that The Corrs were actually a decent musical act with substance, rather than simply relying on Tin Tin Out or Todd Terry to remix everything under the sun for them.

I myself actually prefer the studio In Blue version though, which gives the track a little bit more punch, especially the bridge riff. But I think I'm probably alone on that.

I was actually pleased with Radio getting into the top 20, becasuse as you say, it was live (although barely sounded it until Sharon's 'thank you, thanks very much' and the applause at the end, it was so professional) - and a lot less poppy than the singles that had made their name for them over the previous 18 months. I definitely don't prefer the In Blue version though, made it too poppy through overproduction.

That was the other thing yes, it didn't actually SOUND live necessarily, which I'd say is testiment to how good they were.

05. So Young

[#6 in the UK charts, 1998]

(Average score: 7.5)

Until the last few votes, So Young was actually languishing outside the top 10, alongside the likes of Irresistible and Shame On You. That amused me. So Young is of course one of The Corrs' more recognisable hits, but it's not really a big favourite of mine. It's fun and pleasant and all, but totally throwaway. I'd have preferred a re-issue of I Never Loved You Anyway at this point.
