May 17, 201015 yr I'm looking forward to seeing the track listing. Alright, sorry for taking so long, but here goes. First of all, I do like your concept of it being a 'journey' across different types of soul and the likes. That wasn't really the idea, the 'journey' only came to light because I felt there were three sections to this album. It starts off with the more dance/electro stuff, has a funky section in the middle and ends on the more soulful tracks that are more about the voice. The starting track was very different to the final one and I tried to make the flow from A to B as smooth as possible, with my main objective. Now, the main objective was quite hard to stick to. I wanted to use tracks or artists that I could link to my favourite artist, Beverley Knight. (you'd notice she features on three tracks, one from each 'section'.) This made it hard to try and use unknown songs and to try and make it flow, but I think it just about worked. The Journey 01. Calvin Harris ft. Mary Pearce - Ready For The Weekend (High Contrast Remix) - Yes, this was a bit of a big hit to include on my CD. The reason being because the chorus is performed by Mary Pearce, who is one of Beverley's three backing singers. I opted for the remix because it was lesser known and I thought the intro made it a perfect opener. 02. Fläskkvartetten ft. Robyn - This One's For You (Remix) - You got this one too. Beverley is known for her cover of Robyn's "Keep This Fire Burning" and I wanted to include her, just in case it went to someone who doesn't appreciate soul. At least there'd be this for them? But it's Robyn, so I expect everyone knows it anyway, haha. 03. Haji & Emanuel ft. Beverley Knight & Bryan Chambers - The Pressure - Beverley appears for the first time, with the second of her three backing singers, Bryan Chambers. This was a 2008 cover/rework they did of the 90s house anthem by Sounds Of Blackness for Haji & Emanuel. I wanted to show how she sounds at home on a dance track too. 04. Dave Armstrong & Redroche ft. H-Boogie - Love Has Gone - This one has a bit of a tenuous link, I just wanted something similarly dancy. H-Boogie featured with Beverley on an unreleased track, a collaboration of British R&B soul females, called "Dancing 05". This was released and only made #43 in early 2008, it totally passed me by, but it's a bit of an exercise anthem for me. 05. MPHO - Hips Go Pop - This is from the unreleased "Pop Art" album by the girl who had a top 75 hit with "Echo Beach"-sampling "Box N Locks" last year before being dropped. Shame as I thought the album was alright, this being a highlight. I saw her supporting Beverley Knight at her iTunes Festival date last year. 06. 2b3 ft. 4flava & Young Pro - Keep Going - I'd probably agree with this being a bit of a weak link on the album. I was trying to bridge the gap between track 5 and 7 as best I could, but I'm not sure it worked. This is from a 2009 compilation that featured Beverley. 2b3 did a bit of work with Beverley on her first album/singles from what I can tell. I can see why it might be annoying, but it can be a bit uplifting for me? 07. Robin Thicke ft. Estelle - Rollacoasta - Well you got the title right. It's a track from his most recent album, the song was released this year, but did nothing. I like how smooth it sounds. Another track with "Dancing 05" used as the main link back to Beverley. Estelle also features on a "Keep This Fire Burning" remix. 08. Mamas Gun - Psycho Territory - This is a group I've seen supporting Beverley Knight twice on her most recent tour. I think I'd agree with your Scissor Sisters comparison, I had a few tracks I was considering by these guys, but I thought this one really amped up the funk the most. 09. Seven ft. Beverley Knight - Jail - I really don't know much about this guy. I think he's supposed to be like a Swiss (?) Justin Timberlake. As you can see, this is another track with Beverley. It's from his "Like A Rocket" album. I'm glad you liked this one, it's probably my favourite track of hers as a guest vocalist. 10. Billie Godfrey & The Eden Tree - The Eden Tree - I'm glad this received a fairly positive reaction, I wasn't sure it'd have much appeal to anyone. Anyway, Billie Godfrey is the third (and final) Beverley Knight backing vocalist to appear on the album. She was also a support act on her most recent tour and this track jumped out at me as the best. 11. Al Di Meola ft. Angie Stone - That's The Truth - This is from his album "Vocal Rendezvous", featuring collaborations including, yep, Beverley Knight. I think he's usually a jazz guitarist or something. I'm glad this was well received. I'm not a follower of either artist, but this really stuck out when I was giving clips of the album a listen. 12. India.Arie ft. Musiq Soulchild - Chocolate High - I think this was the lead single taken from her last album, but she's pretty much a US-only artist, so it didn't really hit the airwaves here. I love the combination of their voices on this, but not as much as I love Beverley's duet with Musiq Soulchild. (being her link to this track) 13. Chaka Khan - I Remember U - Ironically titled as this comes from an album that no one remembers. I love the breeziness of this, makes it a great chill out song. I came across this track while trying to find a less obvious Prince (being Beverley's biggest idol) song to include. Then I found this. The album was produced by Prince and Chaka, both huge icons of Beverley, this was my favourite track. 14. Aretha Franklin - You're Taking Up Another Man's Place - I loved how you called this an homage to Aretha. You were close, only it actually is her! Aretha is such a big name and obviously and inspiration to Beverley (she's covered her material) so I tried to look for something less obvious. I found this on a 'rare & unreleased' album, probably a good place to start! 15. Beverley Knight - The Need Of You - And finally, we reach the destination with a wind down with the album's subject. You don't know how hard it was to pick just one (solo) song from her back catalogue! I eventually went for this, an album track from 1998's "Prodigal Sista". I think it does a brilliant job of showing her soulful vocals and emotion. I'm pretty sure the vocal harmonies are all her own, so she's harmonising with herself here. Also, I haven't worked out why it's there, but I love how you can clearly hear her talking to someone in the background but not enough to make out what's being said. Probably some of her finest work. Anyway, I think this was the best way to end it, though with the lyric "I know the journey, I know the distance and the time" it could have easily worked as the opener! Overall, I'm glad you took the time to listen to this properly and found yourself perhaps enjoying something you wouldn't usually expect to. The theme was quite restricted but I'm glad it seemed to work in ways I didn't expect it to. ^_^
May 17, 201015 yr Well. I've had time to digest my CD and stuff now so here's my review of the album entitled 'Giant Space Hoppers' (sorry if this is too brief, I really am crap when it comes to giving quite detailed reviews and stuff haha - I'm just generally crap at writing and putting words together lol): 01. This is the sort of music I literally cannot bear to listen to. But for this swap, I had no choice but to ha. I really don't like the heavy rock, with what sounds like screaming to me lol. Not a good start for the CD and if I was given this out of interest, I really would have stopped this track and probably threw the CD away. But that's because this really isn't the style of music I'm into. 2 out of 10 02. Again, this usually isn't my cup of tea. But this track is actually tolerable. I probably won't go out of my way to listen to it again, but an improvement from the first track at least. 4 out of 10 03. This guys voice sounds very familiar... I swear I've heard his voice at least somewhere before. Reminds me of something The Offspring would do. This track doesn't offend me as much and it's a slight improvement. So far this CD is slowly (very slowly :P) improving for me. 4.5 out of 10 04. I actually quite liked this. It's definitely the sorta thing I like from this kinda genre. 5.5 out of 10 05. This track's literally split in to half haha. Vocal music section for the first half of the track, but then the beat starts again and some random noises are thrown in. Not The Knife 'Variation of Birds' style awful, but still pretty upsetting for my ears lol. 4 out of 10 06. What was the first line of this song? Was it in another language because I didn't understand it lol. Before the CS gas line or something haha. But anyway, I really didn't like this track. Although, tbf it has been growing on me with each listen. 3 out of 10 07. I actually really liked this track. Again, it was another grower but I like it, probably more than I should/originally thought I would. 5 out of 10 08. Really like this track. Reminds me of Linkin Park (who I actually enjoy quite a bit). I must find out this artist as I may actually give some other tracks by them a listen. 7 out of 10 09. Another track that has me interested in who the artist is. But I get the feeling this is probably as commercial as they're likely to get haha. But, yeah I really like this track. 6.5 out of 10 10. I swear I have heard this track before or at least heard something by this artist before? But yes I really like it, it's quite bouncy and it reminds me of Arctic Monkeys. Very good. 8 out of 10 11. Ahhh. This CD is getting better and this is definitely the sort of thing I'm into. Would love to know who this is, as I get the feeling I'd actually quite enjoy their stuff. Sounds sorta like You Me At Six maybe? 8 out of 10 12. This reminds me of The Feeling mixed with bands like You Me At Six and Sum 41 or something. Really reminds me of 'Join With Us' for some reason lol. It's alright, although I feel they have better. 6 out of 10 13. Love the intro and production of this track. I think I've heard some of their stuff before as again they sound quite familiar. Anyhow, really liking this track quite a bit. 7.5 out of 10 14. Not a fan. Pleasent enough though I guess. Doesn't go OTT on the vocals, but it bored me a little bit. 5 out of 10 15. This track is quite odd. I think I like it though. The guy has a unique voice and you can hear a weird accent in his voice as he sings. It's quite a strong accent. But like I said earlier, I dunno what to make of this track, I dunno if I like it or if I don't. I think I do... haha 6.5 out of 10 16. Hmmm. Not sure about this track. I think it's alright, but something majorly puts me off of it. I dunno what it is though... 4.5 out of 10 17. I don't like this track at all i'm afraid. It's better than the opening track, I really don't like this type of thing and it really doesn't appeal to me. 2.5 out of 10 18. Fantastic version of a fantastic track by a fantastic band from a fantastic album. This live version is just beautiful, I am definitely putting this in my keep pile  9 out of 10 ------------------------------------- Overall: 5.5 out of 10 The CD started off a bit, "OMG. This is going to be the CD I didn't want at all" but as the tracks got on, they got better for me. I have discovered some good songs through this though and despite them all not being to my tastes, I am well and truly proud of myself for giving this CD a listen with an open mind and I am really pleased, I got given a CD in which I found a couple of tracks, which I would like to keep and try out more from that particular band. Great going to whoever made this CD and thankyou! Looking forward to more swaps in future!
May 17, 201015 yr Just thought I'd let the person know who made the England CD, that I'll be posting my review within the next few days. I consider myself very lucky, because this CD is straight up my alley, considering others on here were not so fortunate.
May 17, 201015 yr I'm going to review the CD i got later as well as i'm having hard times with headphones so it'll be impossible for me to review at work and I normally become so lazy when i get home after work, so probably next weekend :(
May 17, 201015 yr "Giant Space Hoppers" was my compilation :D Glad you enjoyed at least some of it. 01. 2 out of 10 Er yeah, I fancied throwing a bit of a curveball in first. This is actually the first track on one of my favourite albums ever, but it's not for everyone. I just wanted to open with an in-your-face kind of song. 02. Again, this usually isn't my cup of tea. But this track is actually tolerable. I probably won't go out of my way to listen to it again, but an improvement from the first track at least. 4 out of 10 I found this track on a compilation by the NME and loved it, it's a bit odd and really doesn't sound like an album filler track which is essentially what it was :o 03. This guys voice sounds very familiar... I swear I've heard his voice at least somewhere before. Reminds me of something The Offspring would do. This track doesn't offend me as much and it's a slight improvement. So far this CD is slowly (very slowly ) improving for me. 4.5 out of 10 And you are correct! I love this, it was a single back in 1995 but did nothing over here and was overshadowed by the equally great "Self Esteem". 04. I actually quite liked this. It's definitely the sorta thing I like from this kinda genre. 5.5 out of 10 I love it, the music is fairly generic but the lyrics are just amazing  Unfortunately they haven't got close to bettering it... 05. This track's literally split in to half haha. Vocal music section for the first half of the track, but then the beat starts again and some random noises are thrown in. Not The Knife 'Variation of Birds' style awful, but still pretty upsetting for my ears lol. 4 out of 10 This is a bit of an odd one, I love the album it's from but thought a lot of people here might recognise something like "Devil's Haircut". 06. What was the first line of this song? Was it in another language because I didn't understand it lol. Before the CS gas line or something haha. But anyway, I really didn't like this track. Although, tbf it has been growing on me with each listen. 3 out of 10 Shock horror :o There are probably people here who would crucify me if I said this was my favourite Carter USM track, they are a massive cult band. 07. I actually really liked this track. Again, it was another grower but I like it, probably more than I should/originally thought I would. 5 out of 10 I actually found this from a compilation I was sent when we did this on ChC, I seem to remember comparing it to a power-pop Lostprophets :P 08. Really like this track. Reminds me of Linkin Park (who I actually enjoy quite a bit). I must find out this artist as I may actually give some other tracks by them a listen. 7 out of 10 Again, correct. It's Chester Bennington's side project which was very patchy but made a handful of great songs, this being the pick of the bunch. 09. Another track that has me interested in who the artist is. But I get the feeling this is probably as commercial as they're likely to get haha. But, yeah I really like this track. 6.5 out of 10 I believe this was a single last year? It didn't do much, everyone remembered "Song Away" instead which I find really dull. 10. I swear I have heard this track before or at least heard something by this artist before? But yes I really like it, it's quite bouncy and it reminds me of Arctic Monkeys. Very good. 8 out of 10 You might well have, being a Green Day side project it got quite a lot of exposure (especially since this was released a year before 21st Century Breakdown). I love it, and I couldn't NOT have a bit of GD on my compilation in one form or another. 11. Ahhh. This CD is getting better and this is definitely the sort of thing I'm into. Would love to know who this is, as I get the feeling I'd actually quite enjoy their stuff. Sounds sorta like You Me At Six maybe? 8 out of 10 If you watched Kerrang! TV for an hour it would be likely that you'd see the video for this, they've bummed it to DEATH but I still love it. Check out "Lost In Stereo", which was a single a few weeks back. 12. This reminds me of The Feeling mixed with bands like You Me At Six and Sum 41 or something. Really reminds me of 'Join With Us' for some reason lol. It's alright, although I feel they have better. 6 out of 10 This was an iTunes free single of the week a few months back. I latched on to it and couldn't stop playing it for a week, although I'm actually quite bored of it now :P 13. Love the intro and production of this track. I think I've heard some of their stuff before as again they sound quite familiar. Anyhow, really liking this track quite a bit. 7.5 out of 10 I love the intro as well, really makes the track. Can't remember how I found this but I'm glad I did, love it. 14. Not a fan. Pleasent enough though I guess. Doesn't go OTT on the vocals, but it bored me a little bit. 5 out of 10 I actually found this on Spotify on someone else's playlist :D I think it was a minor top 40 hit a few years ago? 15. This track is quite odd. I think I like it though. The guy has a unique voice and you can hear a weird accent in his voice as he sings. It's quite a strong accent. But like I said earlier, I dunno what to make of this track, I dunno if I like it or if I don't. I think I do... haha 6.5 out of 10 I'm yet to hear a bad review of this song which is odd as, as you say, the singer's voice is quite distinctive. I think this was another minor hit a couple of years back but they split before the album came out. 16. Hmmm. Not sure about this track. I think it's alright, but something majorly puts me off of it. I dunno what it is though... 4.5 out of 10 This actually the most tuneful song on the album  They're an Australian punk band and one of my mates lent me their album because he knows the singer somehow. It's very me, I'm surprised you didn't absolutely hate it :P 17. I don't like this track at all i'm afraid. It's better than the opening track, I really don't like this type of thing and it really doesn't appeal to me. 2.5 out of 10 This lot were supposed to be Nirvana's primary influence, and the album this is off is apparently a classic. I put it on because I wanted another aggressive track before the end, not surprised it didn't go down well. 18. Fantastic version of a fantastic track by a fantastic band from a fantastic album. This live version is just beautiful, I am definitely putting this in my keep pile 9 out of 10 Too right. LP get stick from a lot of the industry for a variety of reasons but I LOVE this version of the song, better than the original for me. So, the full tracklisting: 01 Queens of the Stone Age - You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionnaire 02 The Kills - Sour Cherry 03 The Offspring - Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated) 04 Alkaline Trio - Private Eye 05 Beck - Novacane 06 Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine - Bloodsport For All 07 The Guilty Hands - Guilty Hands 08 Dead By Sunrise - Crawl Back In 09 Hockey - Too Fake 10 Foxboro Hot Tubs - Mother Mary 11 All Time Low - Weightless 12 The Hot Melts - Edith 13 Innerpartysystem - Don't Stop... 14 Incubus - Wish You Were Here 15 Palladium - High 5 16 The Restless Words - The Watcher 17 Pixies - Gouge Away 18 Linkin Park - Pushing Me Away (live from Milton Keynes Bowl)
May 17, 201015 yr Shame I didn't get this one as I think I would have loved it! Nice mix of old and new. I nearly put that Offspring track on my compilation as well but decided against it. Oh and The Pixies' Doolittle IS a classic. PM me the link please!!!
May 17, 201015 yr "Giant Space Hoppers" was my compilation :D Glad you enjoyed at least some of it. 04 Alkaline Trio - Private Eye 07 The Guilty Hands - Guilty Hands 13 Innerpartysystem - Don't Stop... I seem to remember putting those 3 on a CHC CDswap about a year or so ago :P
May 17, 201015 yr OK so it's review time... This CD has no title or at least if it has I can't find it but I think we've established earlier who's it was. It does have all the artists and titles left in but as I only knew two of the acts it wasn't an issue with prejudice at all for the most part. Anyway here goes 1. Aslan - Jealous Little Thing - Promising start to this cd with this melodic Indie track. Decent vocals and a distinctive celtic feel to the band. It's not groundbreaking but it is going to make it's way onto my mp3 player. Not sure why but it kind of reminds me of Goodbye Mr Mackenzie in places. 2. Mundy - Meicsiseo - Acoustic ballad sung in language I can't recognise but at times sounds Hispanic There a strong Irish feel to this track too. I don't mind this but understanding the words would probably improve my feelings for this track. I have no problem with foreign language music but when the song is clearly lyric heavy it helps. 3. Miss Li - Oh Boy - This is insanely fun and catchy. At first i thought the singer would be Canadian. No idea why. Lots of jazzy stuff going on towards the end and this kind of reminded me of Imelda May. Liked this one. I'll keep it. 4. Master Shortie - Bringing It Back - Change of tone no with a modern sounding UK r&b type track. It's not awful but this sort of thing usually leaves me cold and the same can be said here. 5. Juliet Turner - Business As Usual - Acoustic female vocal and guitar track of the kind there are so many about. This could be Lene Marlin or Suzanne Vega orany number of similar acts. it's Ok but I can't really get any more enthusiastic about it. 6. Blizzards - Trouble - This stood out for me the most on first listen and still I think it is the most interesting track. It's drum and guitar propelled power pop with Indie overtones and a slight nod to punk. A chanted chorus and some quirky lines that kind of bring to mind The Futureheads. Mp3 player bound for sure. 7. Christophe Mae - Dingue Dingue Dingue - Initially reminds me of Tracy Chapman stylistically but sung in French. Ok but I can't get the idea of it being a less cheesy Eurovision entry out of my head. 8. Hall And Oates - You Make My Dreams Come True - One of the two artists who's name lept out at me imediately and sadly that was accompanied by a feeling of horror. Thankfully that wasn't indicative of the whole cd and even though I'll never be a fan of these two this isn't the worst thing they've ever done. I was pleasantly surprised that this wasn't as bad as I feared. That said I'm not keen on it at all. 9. Republic Of Loose - Idiots - Minimalist drum beats and an intriguing atmosphere initially but not sure about the vocals. It kind of follows on from Hall & Oates quite well as it has a definate 80s feel to it. Interesting but not exciting 10. Pony Pony Run Run - Hey You - Modern sounding 80s lovefest again. It's Ok and whilst I could quite happily listen to it, it's not something I'm likely to investigate further. OK 11. Travega - Bull Run - This was another that stood out on first listen and I still like this. Shades of a early 80s interest again mixed with a post brit pop sound. Another keeper. The vocals really remind me of some other band I can't think of. 12. NWA - Gimme That Nut - The other track I'd heard of and a track I already knew. Not so much an NWA track as one of Eazy-E's solo efforts labelled as NWA and also one of his 'sexual songs'. Not comparable to the likes of Express Yourself, or Straight Out Of Compton but then little hip hop is,and not as good or funny as Automoblie or Just Don't Bite It. OK but fun. 13. Something A La Mode - Rondo Parisiano - Electronic French sampling track that has a quirky 1950s UFO noise type effect going on in places and I don't mind this. It's not too obvious and has enough charm aboiut it to make it worth hearing again. So to sum up, there was a very noticeable Irish, French feel throughout this cd which intially gave me some guesses as to whos cd it was but. I did think Ephemere (is he on here, called that?) and I briefly toyed with it being Brett Butler or Tonyttt31s but I figured I'd probably be more familiar with the artists on their cds. As it turns out CianS has suggested it's his and I'd never have guessed that. There are at least 4 tracks I'll definately keep and a couple more I might persist with to see if their are further rewards. I'm not certain I was the ideal recipient for this but there's enough similarity in taste that it isn't a mismatch. So for those songs I thank you and you can consider it a job well done.
May 17, 201015 yr I briefly toyed with it being Brett Butler or Tonyttt31s but I figured I'd probably be more familiar with the artists on their cds. I deny all knowledge. I know who has mine.
May 17, 201015 yr 01 Queens of the Stone Age - You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionnaire 03 The Offspring - Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated) 04 Alkaline Trio - Private Eye 13 Innerpartysystem - Don't Stop... good choice of tracks here! could of picked a better Alkaline Trio song from From Here To Infirmary, such an amazing album though, I cant get bored of it.
May 17, 201015 yr That is one awesome playlist. No wonder Suedehead thought it was mine. :P  It was a pleasant surprise to find someone else who has heard of Geneva
May 17, 201015 yr Alright, sorry for taking so long, but here goes. Overall, I'm glad you took the time to listen to this properly and found yourself perhaps enjoying something you wouldn't usually expect to. The theme was quite restricted but I'm glad it seemed to work in ways I didn't expect it to. ^_^ No problem. It's great being able to put names to the tunes.
May 17, 201015 yr I seem to remember putting those 3 on a CHC CDswap about a year or so ago :P I remember putting 'Don't Stop' on a CD swap two years ago!! :P
May 17, 201015 yr I remember putting 'Don't Stop' on a CD swap two years ago!! :P And I remember Bill Clinton using Don't Stop as a campaign song. Oh, hang on, that was Fleetwood Mac
May 17, 201015 yr I remember putting 'Don't Stop' on a CD swap two years ago!! :P And I remember having a disc from you at some point! Although I can't recall if that was on it or not... I kind of hope it was and this is going to be some new tradition. One day that song will conquer the world!!
May 17, 201015 yr I'm sure it was. It was on my 2nd of 3, I know Cod got my first. You and Ephemere got my other two but not sure which way around! I remember it had Futureheads, Digitalism and Imogen Heap on too?
