Posted May 25, 201015 yr I've noticed a few people saying that this year hasn't been as good for music as last year was, so I found the chart for this time last year - week ending 30th May 2009. Here's the top 10: 1 N 1 Dizzee Rascal Feat. Armand Van Helden Bonkers 2 1 2 Black Eyed Peas Boom Boom Pow* 3 2 5 Tinchy Stryder feat. N-Dubz Number 1 4 4 6 Eminem We Made You 5 N 1 Daniel Merriweather Red 6 3 10 La Roux In For The Kill 7 5 9 Lily Allen Not Fair 8 16 4 Soulja Boy Feat. SammieKiss Me Thru The Phone* 9 6 19 Lady Gaga Poker Face 10 N 1 Alexander Rybak Fairytale*Compare to this week's chart: 1 N 1 B.O.B Feat. Bruno Mars Nothing On You 2 2 10 Jason Derulo Ridin' Solo 3 1 4 Roll Deep Feat. Jodie Connor Good Times 4 8 8 Alexandra Burke Feat. Pitbull All Night Long 5 4 2 Edward Maya Feat. Vika Jigulina Stereo Love 6 3 9 Usher Feat. Will.i.Am OMG 7 5 3 Aggro Santos Feat. Kimberly Wyatt Candy 8 6 8 Plan B She Said 9 7 3 Fyfe Dangerfield She's Always A Woman 10 N 1 Leeds United Team & Supporters Leeds Leeds Leeds (Marching On Together) I'm easily voting for 2009. Eight of the songs I loved and still do, with only Tinchy Stryder and Soulja Boy letting the side down. This week though it's the opposite - I only like Plan B and Fyfe, all the others are awful. And next week is looking even worse :/ I know everyone says "music isn't good as it used to be" when they get old, but I'm only 21, this shouldn't happen for years! Hope things get better soon...
May 25, 201015 yr In all fairness, you have just compared one of the best weeks of 2009 with a fairly average one from 2010  All of those 2009 tracks (with the exception of Soulja Boy) were fantastic - but even so, I think the 2010 chart is getting far more hate than it deserves. B.o.B., Roll Deep, Edward Maya, Usher, Plan B and Fyfe Dangerfield are all fantastic, and Alexandra, Jason and Aggro are alright.
May 25, 201015 yr Any top ten with a(n incredible) Eurovision song in it gets my vote  I only disliked Eminem in that top 10, and in the current one I dislike Usher, Plan B and Leeds, so 9 vs. 7 - hardly a huge difference. I do wish there was more pop and dance in the top ten than urban, but it's the nature of the beast and I do tend to like a lot of the urban songs anyway.
May 25, 201015 yr I'm not going by those two charts whenever I say '2010 has been awful for music so far'. To me with my tastes and appreciation for music - it really has. And it's not because I hate the urban genre as they've been some pretty good tracks from that genre this year and last. 2010 is just lacking the huge, unforgettable hits that last year did. It also lacks the mixture of genres which makes the charts interesting and has so far been dominated by FAR more naff/average/bland/repetitive tunes than good ones. There's been many amazing tracks thus far in 2010 but sadly they're failing to make much of an impact or do and then drop down the chart quickly whilst the crap [Dizee Rascal this week ffs!] is making it to #1 and sticking around for FAR too long. I agree. Same goes for albums too - the quality is definitely out there, but it's just not selling.
May 25, 201015 yr Where have all the the BIG established acts gone??? just way too many one hit wonders, and songs that are popular because they feature on adverts :puke2: (the marketing execs definetly caught on to that one! <_< ) With the exception of the odd 'Lady Gaga's/BEP style' success story - NO ONE is releasing decent enough albums atm!
May 25, 201015 yr 2009 by miles. It was a fantastic year. I mean, I mean, we're never going to forget songs such as Bad Romance, Meet Me Halfway, I Gotta Feeling, Poker Face, etc. This year, what do we have? Maybe Fireflies?

He won't be sticking around too long with Dirtee Disco, looking at his last 3 #1's Dance Wiv Me spent 39 weeks Top 75. Bonkers spent 23 weeks Top 75. Holiday spent only 13 weeks Top 75 and I expect the same or similar for Dirtee Disco and possibly only a few weeks Top 10. music is only going through this urban stage because a lot of urban music did amazing last year. things will start becoming more diverse soon anyway :)

May 25, 201015 yr It KILLS me to compare both charts :o I usually hate when people go "boo this year music is $h!t etc etc", but it is true, last year sounds like GOLD compared to this year's rubbish.
May 25, 201015 yr The ones I like now: 1 N 1 B.O.B Feat. Bruno Mars Nothing On You 2 2 10 Jason Derulo Ridin' Solo 3 1 4 Roll Deep Feat. Jodie Connor Good Times 5 4 2 Edward Maya Feat. Vika Jigulina Stereo Love 7 5 3 Aggro Santos Feat. Kimberly Wyatt Candy 8 6 8 Plan B She Said 9 7 3 Fyfe Dangerfield She's Always A Woman The ones I still like now: 1 N 1 Dizzee Rascal Feat. Armand Van Helden Bonkers 3 2 5 Tinchy Stryder feat. N-Dubz Number 1 4 4 6 Eminem We Made You 5 N 1 Daniel Merriweather Red 6 3 10 La Roux In For The Kill 7 5 9 Lily Allen Not Fair 9 6 19 Lady Gaga Poker Face 10 N 1 Alexander Rybak Fairytale* so its a narrow win for 2009 for this week, although considering overall music- I would say this year wins, at least up to this week :( Edited May 25, 201015 yr by chart wizard
May 25, 201015 yr 2009 by FAR. Seeing as the top 2 that week were in my top 5 songs of 2009 there's no competition really. Can't believe in the space of a year Dizzee's gone from the AMAZING ('Bonkers') to the downright awful ('Dirtee Disco'). Eugh. =[
May 25, 201015 yr I wonder why. Is it due to a certain XF winner? :kink:  No, i just like this years songs better. :P
May 25, 201015 yr The UK are turning into the US with all of the urban domination - Sweden seem blissfully unaware though, with only one 'urban' song in the entire top 20, and that's a dance hybrid anyway (Break Your Heart). Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of urban but a bit of variety wouldn't go amiss. Any genre commanding 75% of the top 20 is hardly an ideal situation. If it doesn't change then each year the charts will have two distinct eras - January-September - Urban, October-December - Simon Cowell. Hardly an exciting prospect :( Still, these things do tend to go round in circles and it won't last forever, well the Simon Cowell bit will
May 25, 201015 yr Kylie and Katy Perry should shake the top 10 a bit, mind you Snoop Dogg does appear on Katy's track, so it makes the track a bit urban-ish... non  Look on the bright side we still have footie songs to come :nocheer:
