I guess I'm partly guilty of that as well.

Will try to change it. I didn't know that this was such a big problem for some.

I'm another one who ignores the charts that are re-hashes of the top 40.

My main reason for looking at others' charts is to find out new music from like minded people, I'll always check RFC, Medicated Soap and Pavel's charts even if I don't always have chance to reply. Even though they are not always to my taste, I'd also always look at the likes of Ghosty and Gooddelta's charts too if I see them as they at least contain new music to me.

Well, the charts are personal - so it doesn't matter to me what people put in them if its a rehash of the chart or not is up to them and there is no point being snobby about it as personal music taste is well, personal.

I don't know why replies have listed song with 'what I like this week' - as some have said its always been like that back from the CC days! Guess it has never been discussed or challenged, so this thread is a good thing actually. Having said that, I rarely comment on others charts these days :(

I hardly chart a lot of top 40 material these days, I've had Yes Giantess and Caribou at #1 this year, also had the Pains Of Being Pure At Heart at #1 last year, which surprisingly I found in Doctor Blind's personal chart, not forgetting Bat For Lashes with Daniel, and in the end I bought Bat For Lashes debut album, Fur & Gold on the back of that. I've just charted a new female act in my chart last week by the name of Karen Elson, who apparently is married to Jack White (White Stripes), my music taste has been very versatile lately. Acts like Broken Bells, New Pornographers, Jonsi, Primary 1, Twin Sister, Crystal Castles and many more and I have never charted a Glee track in my personal chart and I'm not going to chart one ever. I have charted quite a few tracks from Medicated Soaps personal chart, its basically if you take the time out to listen to some tracks on you tube, you are basically finding new music that you never came across.

^ Fair enough, Mikey, but like I said, I chart what I like regardless if I think everyone else will  If I like a Glee track, I will chart it regardless of how 'cool' or not it seems to some :P

I dont think my chart's too top 40 inclined. Obviously I dont really think anyone gets too exited at the prospect of discovering new music through my charts since I seem to discover most new music myself these days through other peoples charts

Im with Jester through, I dont think we should be too 'snobbish' about people having charts which have a lot of top 40 hits in them, some people have a more commercial taste I suppose or maybe just dont have enough time to trawl blogs and other charts. Says the lazy sod with too many Glee songs in his chart :P

Same here, but for me it just happens that mainstream music which is big atm is my taste in music as bland as that may be for some people  I most of the time put Hey heres what I like this week ^_^ which the same smileys  Most of the time I don't comment on songs because I'd be tired from work or something but still think if someone comments on your chart its only fair to comment back at least.

Oh absolutely. Even though I don't look at them personally, the people who post charts made of top 40 tracks still have their own tastes and should be allowed to reflect that. Each to their own and all that.

I rarely comment on people's charts, only really members I know the most or members I know share similar tastes to me. I don't really see the point in commenting if I've not really got much to say! As for my own chart...I've tried to start a regular one about four or five times but it never really happens, I always forget about it or just can't really be bothered!

Yes, I don't think the issue is particularly whether people are basing their chart around the UK one, it's the standard of reply.

People tend to treat this forum as a way to up their post count, rather than by actual discussion, perhaps there should be an effort to stop that. I know it's always been like this, but isn't it so much better to open your chart and have comments to reply to? After all, we all spend time compiling them, a little discussion is nice, no?

Indeed! The issue is not about charts being scarily similar to the current week's UK Top 40, but to the reply itself.

I used to reply on many people's charts too but didn't put much work into it as well... However nowadays i rarely post a reply, only to a specific bunch of people or to charts i found something interesting about!

Agreed with the general sentiment in here. It's not the UK chart rehash thing that's a problem. In fact what I meant by that statement is those posters who wait until the UK release week to chart a song rather than charting it straight away which seems strange in this download era when songs trickle into the charts whenever, rather than waiting for a specific release date. Obviously we all have different ways of doing things but I don't understand how it's a personal reflection of your favourite current 40 (or whatever) songs if you're holding songs back. If I held back songs for a few weeks after hearing them, quite a few songs would get much worse peaks than they deserve if I get over them fairly quickly/fierce competition one week etc...

From a selfish point of view as an interested follower of other people's charts and music taste, I'd prefer to see somebody's favourite 40 songs at the moment rather than favourite 40 songs that have already been released. I think Hits strikes a good balance here by doing a pre-release chart, so at least you can guage what he's liking out of the future releases too :D

But it's more the lack of interaction, pasting a list, not even a 'hi' or 'great chart' responses that seem a bit bizarre/pointless to me. Literally just a list of songs

When i joined BJ (only because of personal charts forum btw...) I must've been that confused with these lists seeing that i posted my own week's chart in someone else's thread.

I only started doing a chart about a month ago and i've been sticking to release dates but i think i've been converted from doing that now.

But i think people are going to find it hard to put more than just what they like without sounding forced/awkward, especially with people who don't know each other on the forum. I think it's a good idea worth trying but not sure if it'll work out :(

But what if you have nothing to say

Hey don't sound so surprised, my chart isn't that bad ! :P

As for the debate, I'm not too fussed on the quality of replies - when I post my chart its just nice to know people have bothered to read through it, and it's especially satisfying when somebody discovers a track they like (but have never heard before) in your chart. :)

Then why comment in the first place? I'm not sure there's anybody who does look through every comment's lists attentively and actually enjoys, analyses, etc. it...

Then why comment in the first place?

Because he wants to let the creator of the chart know which songs he liked?

Basically this...

I'm not sure why exactly this is perceived as the forum where it's allowed to make minimalistic posts that are little more than an easy way to boost your post count. If you want to tell people what you like from their chart, I'm sure you can make a little effort to say something that could create discussion or at least a reply.

I normally make conversation if I have something to say about song/artist featured in somebody's chart.

I take time to leave a few comments on a personal chart if they've also taken time to give their opinion on my own.

I try to comment on everyone's chart so if there's 20 posted on same day, I tend to go through them quickly so comments are rationed :P.
