This is one of the weirdest runs ever:

Alyssa Reid - Alone Again (feat. Jump Smokers) - {2}-5-7-12-17-19-23-30-38-38-51-65-x (top 75)

It's weird cause it was SO SHORT for such an amazing song. Should be more like this:

Pretty standard chart run for a standard song, imo.

...and at the opposite end:

Shut Up And Dance "Raving I'm Raving" (1992)

{2}-15

^I think it was deleted because of complaints about the sample used in it.

Almost. They had an initial run pressed up, expecting to maybe sneak into the lower reaches of the chart. Marc Cohn took action as they hadn't cleared the sample of his insipid MOR tune. He said they could go ahead and release what they'd pressed if they donated all proceeds to charity. As a result, there was a bit of a buzz about it and it went straight to number 2 (this was 1992, cheeky rave tunes used to go in there all the time) and then all other copies were sold out the following week. As they couldn't press any more there were literally no more copies to sell, hence the massive drop out.

Sadly this crippled the Shut Up and Dance label and they never really recovered - having to try to recoup cash with an awful "remix". Fittingly, Marc Cohn never had another hit single either and Shut Up and Dance made a wee bit of cash by selling out and remixing Cher's horrible cover of the original.

Celine Dion - Think Twice

It had a rather strange climb to number 1 and actually initially looked like being a flop. I can't remember the exact positions each week but I think it entered about number 50, dropped and then climbed very slowly before staying at number one for 7 weeks.

gaga's 'the edge of glory' one is quite strange!!

Certainly this bit: {6}-6-18-23-28-16-8-7-11-...

Same with Judas which had a very similar chart run, ceebs to find the chart run.

Yep...

Reel 2 Real Featuring The Mad Stuntman 'I Like To Move It' (1994)

9-10-12-12-10-9-7-5-8-7-7-8-10-11-19-30-40-41-58-73 (20 weeks)

I remember this at the time! I was only 12 and starting to listen to the charts! It's run probably doesn't look that strange by today's chart standards, but in 1994 it was wild! I even remember mark goodier commenting on how weird it was during one of the top 40 shows!

At one point in 1994 I Like to Move It was the best selling track to not have reached the Top 3 in the 90s.

I wouldn't really say that's shocking. It's just an example of a fanbase buy in the download era. One Direction had a similar (but smaller) chart run with 'One Thing'.

Perhaps not, but I remember at the time, I though the "22-25-24-22-25-22-10" bit was quite cool.

I like Avril Lavigne's 'Girlfriend' chart-run-wise:

73 - 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 3 - 5 - 9...

Very strange how it didn't get to #1 since it "debuted" at #3 two weeks before physical release in 2007.

It didn't get to number 1 because of the stupid Peter Kay/Matt Lucas comic relief song. :(

It's already been mentioned but my fave chart run of all time is outkast's, hey ya! So strange.

Shocked that no one has mentioned Foundatioms by Kate Nash, wasn't it number 2 for 4/5 weeks?

And another fave of mine, purely because I'm a geek and I like symmetrical things is Kelly Clarkson's "Since You've Been Gone" 5-6-7-6-5 ^_^

Good topic. There was one I always read about in Guinness Hit Singles books growing up that always fascinated me, mainly because I couldn't believe it given how popular the show was in the 80's:

Everyhit.com

Nearest 'Miss'

In terms of an 'original' recording (ie. not a re-issue) the record is held by Ken Barrie's theme tune to the TV programme "Postman Pat." It had three separate chart runs peaking at 44, 54 and 59 respectively, spending a total of 15 weeks in the Top 75.

If Pat had been on screens at the same time Bob the Builder et al had their number 1's in the late 90's/early 00's I'm sure it would have been a very different story!
