UPDATED TO INCLUED ELLA (bit late I know)

Alexandra Burke: Overcome - Hallelujah

Cheryl Cole: 3 Words - Fight For This Love

Diana Vickers: Songs From The Tainted Cherry Tree - Once

Ella Henderson: Chapter One - Ghost

Kylie Minogue: Kylie - I Should Be So Lucky

Lady Gaga: The Fame - Just Dance

Leona Lewis: Spirit - A Moment Like This

Rita Ora: ORA - R.I.P (ft. Tinie Tempah)

Sam Bailey: The Power Of Love - Skyscraper

Sandi Thom: Smile It Confuses People - I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair)

10 including;

8 Brits, 1 American, 1 Australian

5 had X Factor launches (6 if you want include Cheryl)

5 from 2000s, 4 from 2010s, 1 from 1980s

2 included males on debuts

3 had previously appeared on number one singles (Diana + Alexandra - Hero {X Factor Finalists 2008}, Cheryl - Sound Of The Underground et al.

Only Sandi Thom, Lady Gaga & Rita had no real British fame before no.1 (Cheryl was in Popstars/Girls Aloud/X Factor judge, Kylie was in Neighbours, and the rest were X Factor contestants)

Only Leona Lewis, Cheryl Cole, Kylie Minogue & Lady GaGa have managed to have both another number one album and single.

Sandi, Diana, Sam & Ella are stuck on having only their debuts as no1s* as of yet.

Didn't Rita appear on Hot Right Now before RIP? :o

Yeah, but the list is based on them as primary artists, hence why Cheryl Cole is listed but Kelly isn't.

but surely she had previously appeared on a #1 single though..actually I think I don't understand

It's a shame to see Diana there with what on the surface is a very impressive achievement, but achieved precisely nothing else in her career. :(

I think if the name appears on the single, as a feature, a with, an and or anything else, then it clearly counts (it certainly would if there were no other number ones after it). So Cole and Ora should come off that list

I don't believe it should in this instance. Heartbreaker was not Cheryl's debut single, Fight For This Love was, there's no doubt in that surely?

I think considering the thread title is "début singles" rather than "first single that involved their name to chart", the argument for including featurings is pretty much void.
Rita could potentially be excluded from the artists having 'no real British fame before their #1' though, through appearing on a UK #1 single!
