November 8, 201014 yr But some covers are better than the original. Not saying Leona's Run is, but nowadays, when everybody thinks of a cover, they automatically think of the X Factor winner's single. Not all covers are that bad, and the show is really giving a bad name to covers imo. You can put more effort into making a cover than into making an "original" song. ^^ Yah. Obvious example for me would be Guns'N'Roses "Knocking on Heaven's Door" being an improvement on the original. However IMO the lyrics can only really be taken seriously from the original version which is why I nearly always prefer original songs. How many million sellers are covers, out of interest? Also I would suggest a lot of effort can be put into a cover... but in the vast majority of cases I suspect writing an original is much harder. Edited November 8, 201014 yr by Matty01

Except I suppose I'm more on an instrumental person than a lyrics person (apart from when I'm listening to hip hop), so with most pop and RnB songs, I don't have a clue what the lyrics are anyway. I think quite a lot of the million sellers are covers actually. Especially the more recent ones, although we are starting to get more "normal" songs like Poker Face and I Gotta Feeling selling a million.
November 8, 201014 yr So, Gnarls Barkley - Crazy next? Does anyone have sales for crazy by Gnarls Barkley? Edited November 8, 201014 yr by gilly010
November 8, 201014 yr Does anyone have sales for crazy by Gnarls Barkley? I understood it was on 995,000+ a couple of weeks ago (confirmed by Music Week). Should make it before xmas?

Did Leona Lewis arrange the song herself? I don't think so. So somebody has arranged a song written boy somebody (or even lightbody) else yet she gets all the credit. How then does she "deserve" to sell a million? Even if I thought her version was better than the original - and I don't - I still wouldn't think she deserved most of the credit.

Leona does do alot of her arrangements, so i wouldn't be surprised if she was responsible.

I just listen to them because they sound nice. :) I'm not even a fan of Run/Leona though, I'm just not opposed to covers, and I think artists who do covers are given a really hard time. Same with artists who sample, use autotune, etc. They can make songs that sound amazing, but some people seem to have some sort of "checklist" when deciding what music to like, and if a song does not fit all the criteria, they will refuse to like it, even if it does actually sound nice to them. But yes, it might be more correct to say "that version of the song deserves" to sell a million, than "that artist deserves to sell a million", as it is indeed possible that the artist didn't do enough to warrant "deserving" a million seller. I personally don't think any Leona Lewis songs deserve to sell a million, as I find them all snooze-worthy. :( Edited November 8, 201014 yr by Eric_Blob

I personally don't think any Leona Lewis songs deserve to sell a million, as I find them all snooze-worthy. :( I don't have anything against covers. There have been some excellent covers over the years. There are even some Beatles songs where I prefer a cover to the original. But Leona's version of Run is just a stereotypical X-Factor cover complete with the key change, the choir and a total lack of emotion. Just watch this performance from Glastonbury 2004. That afternoon one of the BBC 6Music presenters (I think it may have been Jo Whiley but I'm not sure) said she had been speaking to Gary Lightbody's father earlier that day. He had talked about how he had thought his son had been wasting his time trying to make it in the music business. But he got there in the end and just watch him at the end of the performance to see how much it meant to him. CmK6IEDnvAk
November 8, 201014 yr But it's a cover. So it would be more like congratulations to Snow Patrol. EDIT: In fact, I'm not sure I could think of anything less deserving than singing a cover version of a song and getting to to 1,000,000 sales. How amusing to describe Leona as 'deserving' to get 1million sales. :P i think leona's version is far better than the original. its hype was created over a live lounge performance too not as the winners single or anything
November 8, 201014 yr ANYWAY, back on topic please! This is not a thread about Leona's Run so can we please discuss the million sellers. Thanks.
November 9, 201014 yr With regards to Crazy, do digital sales in weeks it was ineligble for the chart count? (i.e. in the few months leading up to January 2007, but after it was physically deleted). If not, it will have already sold a million, but not officially, if you catch my drift!

November 10, 201014 yr Just need Run to get a million one day, she'd deserve that too! That would be incredible! Will take years to get there but its possible. Leona transforms that song in to an epic, emotional & such a powerful song, she's just amazing. I understood that they didn't - otherwise it would have been confirmed as a million seller. Really? I'm sure it'll hit that million seller soon though. Was really shocked at the success of that song. Edited November 10, 201014 yr by Peace

I love Tragedy. Actually, you can give a lot of credit for Steps for that one, the dance routine for it was legendary.
November 10, 201014 yr I think for crazy although it wasn't eligible to chart, its sales still count and will be included in the 995k total. Its a bit like when albums go budget and are ineligible to chart, but their sales still count and add to their total. Congrats to BL, I wonder who else is close?

November 10, 201014 yr I wonder who else is close? Gnarls Barkley - Crazy Rod Stewart - Sailing Closest singles to a million sales atm.
