In November 2002, 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina',

by Julie Covington, (1976), was on 993,000 UK

Sales. It has now sold over a Million. The OCC

tell me that it was that Hit that became the

1st UK Female Solo Single to sell a UK Million.

'Hallelujah', by Alexandra Burke, sold a UK

Million far, far faster, in 2008/2009, but the

Julie Covington Single had reached a Million

before her. So Alexandra was the 2nd UK Female

Solo Act to have a UK Million Selling Single.

Is there a way to prove that? Cos I just mentioned it on Alex's forums that she's actually the 2nd UK female to score over the million mark, and I've had my head bitten off.

It looks unlikely but you never can tell. Iirc, 'Into The Groove' is Madonna's biggest selling UK hit with around 850k sold in 1985. The track may have sold more when 'Celebration' (the album) was released last year. That's the only single that has any chance of breaking through the million sales barrier.

I understood it was on 995,000+ a couple of weeks ago (confirmed by Music Week).

Should make it before xmas?

I actually downloaded 'Crazy' 2 weeks ago, as I lost all the songs on my iTunes about a year ago.

Is there a way to prove that? Cos I just mentioned it on Alex's forums that she's actually the 2nd UK female to score over the million mark, and I've had my head bitten off.

I changed La Burke's wiki entry and it was changed back again within hours. An official press release from the OCC would be helpful

Is there any way that the list on the first page of this thread can be updated to include all the songs which have passed the million mark? I know we won't be able to figure out where they should be on the list but maybe if they're just included after the first 100??

also if the sales post could be pinned to the front as it took me ages to find it buried in the thread

thanks!

One of my OCC Contacts, told me that 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina'

had reached a UK Million, for Julie Covington. That it had also reached

the Million before Alexandra Burke's 1st Hit. (We discussed the matter

on the 'phone, & he checked this matter as we spoke - he checked on

his Computer).

After all - the Julie Covington Hit, only needed to sell 7,000 on Downloads,

to reach 1 Million UK Sales. It wasn't hard for her to manage it - as Downloads

were first counted in September 2004 - over 6 Years ago. (According to the

latest 'Hit Singles' Book, anyhow - which has a List of the Top 50 Catalogue

Singles, that were released before September 2004. It says that The OCC

'launched' their Download Chart then).

I'm not surprised that Alexandra's Fans would rather believe

the Myth, that she was the 1st UK Solo Female to have a Million

Selling Single. Fans of an Act never, ever want Myths, (that

show the Feats of that Act), to be challenged. They'd rather

believe a cosy Myth, than an unpalatable truth.

I'll see if I can get The OCC to put the real facts on their Site.

zeus - does this mean that all of Gnarls Barkley's downloads have been included in the total i.e. the two weeks of official chart ineligible download sales before the rule was changed to allow download sales one week before the physical was out?

Thanks :D As you know I've got a bit of a bee in my bonnet about this. That's partly because I love the Julie Covington song and don't like Alexandra Burke's version of Hallelujah. But it's also because I want to see the right singer get the credit for being the first UK female solo singer to sell a million. Burke will still have the record for the quickest to sell a million and may well hold that record for a long time to come.

I think for crazy although it wasn't eligible to chart, its sales still count and will be included in the 995k total. Its a bit like when albums go budget and are ineligible to chart, but their sales still count and add to their total.

Congrats to BL, I wonder who else is close?

I'm not zeus (maybe I can be apollo instead :lol ) but see my previous post above. I think the same would apply here. Although ineligible to chart, I believe all of its sales will be collated, and included in the total

All sales for Crazy, from when the record was both chart eligible and excluded from the chart, are included in its total sales. The same is true of other singles that suffered the same fate - Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol or Maneater by Nelly Furtado, for example. Alan Jones confirmed this in one of his chart commentaries though unfortunately I can't recall the exact one.

When Crazy was removed from the chart in June 2006 it had sold about 713,000 copies. In the year end chart its official sales were 820,053 which included the addition of its pre chart / post chart sales.

I got bored so I thought I'd try and make a list of songs we should probably watch and should hopefully cross the million barrier within the next decade or so if downloads maintain or increase their sales. I've put them in alphabetical order and the ones with '??' next to them I'm not really sure about. Lemme know what you all think, should there be any added or some taken off?

1. Aerosmith - I Don't Want to Miss A Thing

2. Atomic Kitten - Whole Again

3. Bruno Mars - Just the Way You Are ?? (It's selling well... could be a consistent seller)

4. Cheryl Cole - Fight For This Love

5. Cliff Richard & the Shadows - The Next Time/ Bachelor Boy

6. Dawn - Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree

7. East 17 - Stay Another Day ?? (Benefits yearly from Christmas chart so could possibly reach the million mark, was on 910k in 2005)

8. Eminem - Lose Yourself ?? (Always on the iTunes chart, sells consitently)

9. Eminem feat. Rihanna - Love The Way You Lie

10. George Harrison - My Sweet Lord

11. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy

12. Jounrey - Don't Stop Believin'

13. Kylie Minogue & Jason Donavon - Easpecially For You

14. Lady Gaga - Bad Romance

15. Lady Gaga - Just Dance

16. Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You

17. Peter Andre - Mysterious Girl

18. Pipes, Drums & Military Band of the Royal Scots Dragon Guards - Amazing Grace ?? (I don't really know if this is available to download, plus who buys instrumentals these days? 962k in 2005)

19. Pogues feat. Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale of New York

20. Pussycat - Mississippi

21. Rage Against the Machine - Killing In the Name

22. Rod Stewart - Sailing

23. Showaddywaddy - Under the Moon of Love

24. Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars ?? (Sells well annually - perhaps if it were sang on the xfactor?)

25. Spice Girls - Say You'll Be There ?? (Don't know an updated figure but could possibly pass the million, was on 900k in 2005. Possibly after another Spice Girls reunion?)

26. Tight Fit - The Lion Sleeps Tonight

27. Tornados - Telstar

I've bolded ones I think have a good chance of making a million at some point if downloads do carry on at their current pace.

Other ones from this list that might make a million are Aerosmith, George Harrison, Peter Andre, Tight Fit and *maybe* Rage, if any of them get a boost (it'd need to be another huge boost in Rage's case) again. Not sure how close to a million Aerosmith and George are, but I know Peter and Tight Fit are pretty close

The two I've italicised are consistent sellers who have racked up decent sales but both are still a long way aff the million as far as I'm aware, same goes for The Killers' Mr. Brightside which despite having been top 200 every week from the start of 2007 until last week (when The Beatles pushed it out) plus its pre-2007 sales has not even done 400k. DSB and CC *could* pass a million one day given a huge boost but I doubt it.

As for the others I've got absolutely no idea. If any of them are particularly close to a million already they could well trickle past it one day but otherwise I don't know. Cliff will almost certainly never pass a million as nobody ever downloads any Cliff Richard song with the one exception of 'Devil Woman' which sees an annually-decreasing boost around Halloween.

Edited by What's My Name?

I think vidcapper had worked out that Aerosmith were on about 800k now and it's sold roughly 200k since downloads were included in the chart so I can definitely see it selling a million within the next 3 or 4 years. Has averged out about 50-60k a year I think.

Rod Stewart - Sailing is less than 5k away from the million.

Journey is on approximately 750k - I have no doubt it will make the million!

All the songs except Chasing Cars, Fairytale of New York, All I want for Christmas, Killing in the Name, Lose Yourself, I Don't Want to Miss A Thing and those released 2009/10 have all passed the 900k mark so are very close!

Thanks, interesting list, and most not implausible.

I see it as 3 types of hit:

1. current/recent hits who's sales are tailing off but may reach over the million if they maintain some momentum (e.g. eminem-rihanna, cheryls FFTL, Gaga's Bad Romance (don't see JD doing it anytime soon tbh))

2. Perrennials (e.g. Aerosmith, Chasing Cars - Eye of the Tiger has done well in this category)

3. Oldies - not likely to be popular downloads but only a fraction away (e.g. Rod Stewart, Royal Scot's Guard, Dawn, Kylie & Jason)

You'd think with it already being on 990k+, both of them still being around and "new" cherrypicks off Ultimate Kylie it would reach soon (though prob sounds a bit naff now). It def would if they redid it for charity/for a laugh e.g. a live CIN performance!
