Posted September 15, 201014 yr Just wondering, do the Glee cast hold the record for most hits in one year now which the Wedding Present set in 1992 - or did it have to be an unbroken run or physically released singles? Glee have had 16 hits this year (and loads outside the top 40) while the Weddoes only released 12 in '92 and got all of them into the top 40. Any ideas?
September 15, 201014 yr I'm not sure. They must've broken some sort of record, I would've thought. Plus, doesn't the season 2 start soon? If so, there'll be even more top 40 hits this year.
September 15, 201014 yr Elvis already broke the Wedding Present's record back in 2005 when his 18 re-releases in a row all went top 10, although I'm not sure whether Glee would count or not.
September 15, 201014 yr Why wouldn't glee count? Because we're talking about music  They could be excluded because they weren't "releases" in the same sense as Elvis or The Wedding Present. However, if I was compiling a book, I'd include them but also qualify it with an explanation of how it was achieved.
September 15, 201014 yr Michael Jackson also had 18 top 40 hits in 2006 (they, too, were all re-releases)
September 15, 201014 yr Not all of them went top 40, did they? So I don't think it'd count as consecutive...
September 15, 201014 yr Not all of them went top 40, did they? So I don't think it'd count as consecutive... They did all go top 40 (re: MJ) Also, I just found out he actually got 19 top 40 hits, chartstats.com was just being dumb and counting Blood On The Dancefloor under the original version
September 15, 201014 yr The main difference is that the Elvis Presley, & Michael Jackson Hits had all been Hits before. The Glee 'Singles' were 1st time Hits for the Cast of that TV Series. All were Covers, but they were still first time Hits for the Glee Cast. I'd be more impressed if the Glee Cast could get them all in the Charts again, say in 2015 or 2020. It won't happen, because Glee Chart success depends on the TV Show being popular - and it won't be in 2015, or 2020 etc. (No more so than the obsessive Fans of 'Kids From Fame - in 1982 - were still keen, on that TV Show, in 1985 or 1986). Once such TV Shows end, the Chart success - connected with them - ends too. 'Glee' is a FAD - Elvis Presley, & Michael Jackson are forever...... Edited September 15, 201014 yr by zeus555
September 16, 201014 yr Author Thanks everyone. So, I guess the Wedding Present still hold the record for most consecutive top 40 hits in one year that are not re-releases or cover versions!
September 16, 201014 yr They did all go top 40 (re: MJ) Also, I just found out he actually got 19 top 40 hits, chartstats.com was just being dumb and counting Blood On The Dancefloor under the original version I was referring to Glee :P
September 16, 201014 yr Thanks everyone. So, I guess the Wedding Present still hold the record for most consecutive top 40 hits in one year that are not re-releases or cover versions! Ah, Tyron is right then, Glee's hits were in no way consecutive :P
September 17, 201014 yr 'Glee' is a FAD - Elvis Presley, & Michael Jackson are forever...... A question related to this: I wrote about the most Top 75 hits in my blog.. How many Top 75 hits Elvis has? Wikipedia says 152 counting the re-releases (2005) but from Polyhex I counted about 170. Is there an official number?
September 17, 201014 yr Plus, doesn't the season 2 start soon? If so, there'll be even more top 40 hits this year. The second season of Glee airs in January 2011, in the UK.
