The Republicans have made big gains in the US midterms, gaining 60 seats to take the House of Representatives - the biggest changeover of seats since the 1940s. The Democrats clung onto the Senate, but lost six seats to leave them holding 53 of the 100 seats - well below the 60 they need to stop Republicans "filibustering" any of Obama's proposals, if they can even get through the House of Reps in the first place. It was a relatively successful night for the Tea Party, although there were a few disappointments, including Christine "masturbation is immoral" O'Donnell getting thrashed.

Even though the Republicans are claiming the midterms are a rejection of Obama's "big government", the exit polls tell a different story - practically no-one cared about the deficit or debt, they only cared about the fact unemployment is stubbornly high (which the Republicans have no answers to). In fact, Obama still has higher approval ratings than the Republicans as a whole. It's also worth pointing out that Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan suffered similar drubbings halfway through their first terms before cruising to wins in presidential elections two years later. The smart money is still on Obama being re-elected in 2012 imo - the only way the Republicans stand a chance is if they find a young, fresh candidate who has moderate politics, considering exit polls showed less than 25% of Americans say they identify with the Tea Party platform and there's a huge anti-establishment sentiment right now. But, the only young, fresh high profiles the Republicans have right now are Tea Party crazies like Palin, Huckabee and O'Donnell, and the only high-profile moderates they have are part of the hated Washington establishment like McCain and Romney.

Some of the Republican candidates were completely barking. Fortunately most of them lost. However, Rand Paul won and he has said that he would probably have voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (which ended racial segregation). The Tea Party candidate in Alaska (backed by Sarah Appalling) also looks like losing to a candidate who wasn't even on the ballot paper. Voters can add their own preferred candidate to the ballot paper and Alaskans seem to have done just that in defiance of their former governor.

I was wrong about no more than one Tea Party member winning in the senate race, there'll be 5 in the senate and 40 in the House of Representatives, which in itself isn't too bad. I'm glad that Christine O'Donnell didn't win, she was so mad she even made the rest of the Tea Party look almost sane.

Also, I'm glad Alan Grayson of the Democrats lost his, he ran a particularly vile campaign against his rival.

Whilst the Republicans won the HOR, crucially they didn't win the Senate, which means that any measures they try to bring in through the House can get shot down in the Senate (or vetoed by the President in the unlikely event it gets that far). This means that we could see very little getting done until the elections in 2012, in which all the pressure will be on Obama.

This was bound to happen. Obama is now suffering from two year slump. I do believe he is trying his best. He did inherit a bad economy which Bush created I think some people have forgot that. It's going really hard for him to get everything through the Congress now.

The Typical American Voter must be a complete idiot with a memory as short as a fukkin' senile Goldfish... Seriously, voting REPUBLICAN, when it was the bloody REPUBLICANS who totally fukked up the economy, which led to millions losing their jobs, homes, etc.... Idiots.. Seriously, idiots.... It really concerns me that a country with this vast volume of ignorant, know-nothing idiots is actually a fukkin' Superpower.... I actually think that if Thomas Jefferson and George Washington had had the ability to see into the future and what their country would end up becoming, they'd've given up to the Brits and we'd have America as part of the Commonwealth....

Sarah Palin? Seriously, wont someone just shoot this mad bitch now and save us a lot of trouble further down the line if, god forbid, she actually became President.. Jesus, she'd make Thatcher seem sane and rational by comparison....

I quite like Palin. She's an dire politician, granted, but i just find her amusing. Some of the things she comes out with i just fail to be anything less than highly amused at

Therein lies her evil master plan, that people will be so "amused" by her they'll think "Hey, I'll just vote for that crazy broad on the telly, she's good for a laugh..". Remember, people in London thought "Hey, that Boris Johnson's a good laugh on Have I Got News For You.. I know, I'll vote for him as Mayor, wont that be just HILARIOUS daaaaahhhhlinnnngggg".......

I mean, I'm sorry, but "Tea Parties" are supposed to be sedate affairs, with Earl Grey in little-cups which you hold with your pinky raised, and cucumber and watercress sandwiches... Not a bunch of raving, right-wing lunatic fukk-wits shouting a load of crypto-fascist bollocks......

I'd never vote for her. I'm of the opinion she should move from politics to stand up comedy.

Rand Paul actually said that??? You have got to be kidding..... And these American Idiots voted for this c'unt...???

So, basically Alaskans despise Sarah (Ap)Palin(g)....

Uh, Republicans. Comparable, if not worse than the bloody Conservatives. C'mon Americans, learn something, you want to go down a ditch, be my guest, but what LITTLE respect you still have will have vanished if you vote in the Fascist F****** in 2 years time...

Precisely. I wonder what Craig would have said about this if he was still here... or what Shelli will say if she finds this

Craig is to date the only person I know right-wing enough to support the Republicans with a straight face.

Considering she thinks ''the labour president is Gordon Brown'', I don't think we should ask...

Is Bristol Palin Republican? She is adorable on Dancing with the Stars and very popular! x

Why are there so many dim people with such short memories? It really is infuriating to see. I am sure it must be very frustrating for all the Americans with common sense who are not brainwashed by Fox News. The Republicans are harping on about how Obama is ruining America etc and how he has made no change, all of which is absolute utter bollox. As you said Grimly it was 8 years of Bush and the Republicans in power that has put the US in the mess it is in today. Why don't people there see that it will take a long time to repair such a massive economic mess? Are they that stupid that they think Obama should fix everything within five minutes and if he doesn't then the people who caused the mess could be brought back in to inflict further damage with their incompetence?

Obama said during his campaign that it would not be until the end of his first term where the economy would really start improving. I recently read an excellent article in RS about his achievements thus far. The facts are that he has already achieved 70% of what he said he was going to do - he has made a huge amount of change already two years into his presidency, and has proved to have made more progressive change with his legislative record in just 20 months than any President since LBJ. He has done what so many of his predesesors failed to do and transform the entire heath service, took 100,000 troops out of Iraq and giving an end date to the war, implemented huge financial reform, which in turn got the economy back on the road to recovery. He cut $200M in corporate welfare and reinvested it to make college more accessible., prevented the collapse of the big three automakers and invested $200M in clean energy. And of course he has totally restored America’s reputation internationally with Global confidence climbing to 70% now from such a low of 21% in 2007 under Bush. This was all achieved despite huge obstacles. This ill-informed right wing media view that he is doing f*** all is typical ignorance to be expected . No he is not perfect by any means, and a lot of work is still needed especially when it comes to tackling the huge unemployment but he is a hell of a lot better than pig ignorant Republicans like Sarah bloody Palin, and the US economy is in far better hands with a Democratic Govt than a Republican. Had the Rep remained in office and let the collapse t take it’s course the US would have been in a vastly worse state now – experts claim debt would have doubled without had the steps Obama’s administration not been taken with his stimulus plan. When Clinton took over from Bush Snr he inherited huge debt, and 8 years on left the US economy with a surplus. Then comes along Bush Jr and totally ruins the country and now yet again the Democrats have to clean up the mess. People need to give Obama and his team a lot longer than 2 years before the economy shows strong signs of improvement. I hope he gets a second term as I do think he will turn out to be a great President. Sadly now the Republicans have control of the House again it will be a lot more difficult for him to pass policies in order to get the economy back on track, as they will, as always end up putting their party ahead of the country. I do hope Palin somehow manages to get the 2012 Nomination though. Just seeing her in a debate against Obama would be so entertaining and would truly show her for what she is - an ignorant incompetent moron.

Actually, the facts show that so far he's achieved less than 25% of what he said he was going to do, including breaking at least 20 of his campaign promises. Significantly less than what you've described, but a whole lot more than those who've said he's done nothing. Although in fairness, I expect 2011 to be the year that he gets a good lot of these done.

There's no hope in hell of Palin getting the 2012 nomination. Most Republicans can hardly take her seriously, let alone the American people.
