A few years ago I'd have agreed with you, but in recent years I think they've been pretty good at marketing their winners (Leona, Alexandra). Admittedly Joe McElderry has been a misfire, but I think part of that was they tried to market him as an uber gay Mika type, which he never was in the actual show.

If they stick to Matt's key strength (adult guitar MOR), I think he's got every chance of being a big seller.

On Aiden, I don't think you can argue someone's guaranteed a place in the final five because they survived Week 2. And I don't think you can assume he's NOT going to have any more dire weeks, which he will be far less able to get away with when he's in the later stages. He won't have a throwaway Storm Lee, Diva Fever or Belle Amie to save him then. Aiden is still far too hit and miss.

The difference is, none of the other acts (One Direction possibly aside) have the massive backing of the rubbishgais all voting with their cocks! I'd say he's one of only four acts that has a significant fanbase - the others being OD, Cher and Matt, so I think he's easily a shoo-in for the top five regardless of how hit-and-miss his performances are.

You've hit upon the major flaw in your argument. One Direction indeed are going to be picking up a lot of the rubbishgai vote, and I think even Matt is getting his share aswell.

And aswell as that, Buzzjack is proof that rubbishgais DON'T always vote for their cocks, but vote for the latest female - hello Cher and Rebecca.

Aiden's attracting his fair share of rubbishgai attention! Buzzjack shows the flaw in your argument - One Direction aren't getting much of the rubbishgai vote, more of the creepy FMForumsgai vote - which I'd say Aiden and Matt are getting equally.

Katie's not really getting much of the rubbishgai vote either I don't think - but then, barely ANYBODY's voting for Katie as it is now she's gone to shit. Cher and Rebecca are shoo-ins for the final five anyway...

But nevertheless the rubbishgai vote is STILL being split, and that's my argument which you don't seem to be getting. 1/3 of the rubbishgai vote is NOT going to be enough to win a top 5 placing. And again, I think you're also underestimating Mary, who will be taking a fair share of the Sid & Doris vote.

I'll concede Katie was probably a poor example (hence why I edited her out).

Indeed, but there are rubbishgirls voting for him too! I'd say 40% of the rubbishgai and 40% of the rubbishgirl vote will be more than enough to win a top 5 placing given those are probably the two most ardent voting groups...Mary seems to be the sort of person who'll have it made if she gets to the final and picks up the casual voters, but as it is in the mid-season I think she's ripe for a shock exit.

Rebecca might not have a diehard fanbase established yet but I bet a high percentage of viewers aged over 40 and voting will be voting for Rebecca, she oozes class. The people that vote on the phone aren't necessarily those that buy the records and a lot of Reality TV shocks have seen acts with supposedly large fanbases losing out to somebody who mops up votes from all over the place (Will Young over Gareth, Alexandra over JLS etc..) The Heart FM/MOR vote is an incredibly strong force, don't underestimate it! Not that I'm stereotyping of course. I never vote in these things but am more likely to buy the records of the eventual winners! But if I was voting, it would be for either Rebecca or Matt this week.

My ranking for tonight:

1. Aiden

2. Rebecca

3. Paije - My favourite performance of his.

4. Matt

5. One Direction - Their best performance imo, and it looked like they were having the time of their lives.

6. Treyc

7. Cher

8. Katie

9. Mary

10. Wagner

I think 40% is really overestimating things a bit... And like Gooddelta says, you forget the Heart FM/MOR crowd, who aren't going to be plumping for Aiden over a Rebecca, Matt or Mary.

Don't get me wrong, I actually LIKE Aiden, and would like to be proven wrong. I just don't think he's been consistent enough to feature amongst the big guns yet.

Great show tonight, my ranking of the final 10 on this weeks performance is

01 Matt (clearly my faveourite tonight)

02 Aidan

03 Katy

04 1Direction

05 Paige

06 Mary(Really like Mary but she looked uncomfortable tonight)

07 Cher

08 TreyC

09 Rebecca( lovely girl i understand why people like/love her but for me i dont like that style of music in general and also i feel she does the same thing every single week and im well bored of it now)

10 Wagner

Cher - 5 - it was always going to be highly unlikely that she’d match last week’s performance.

Mary - 4 - disappointing, she looked decidedly uncomfortable on stage.

Weasel - 5 - good song choice, the execution was ropey.

Aiden - 7 - by far the most comfortable Aiden has looked on stage to date, dreamy.

Paige - 6 - another good choice, instantly recognizable to the older generation, he should be through to next week.

Rebecca - 7 - fantastic performance as always, but the song is just too ubiquitous at the moment.

Wagner - 4 - the jokes possibly wearing thin, perhaps because the standard of the other contestants around him is abnormally high this year.

Matt - 9 - Absolutely outstanding.

TrayC - 6 - strong vocal, but somehow readily forgettable which is a shame.

One Dimension - 5 - Louis!!!! xD  :w00t:  :w00t:  :w00t:

Rebecca was just so way ahead of the field tonight. The only other that came close was Matt (but he just makes me feel really nervous) and Aiden. Cher was pretty much back to her usual stuff and Mary was just awful (awful song though).

None of the others are worth commenting on.

My views:

01 / Rebecca – 10/10 – I don’t even give a $h!t anymore that she comes off as a tad dull, because that was f***ing sensational vocally. I am fast becoming a Rebecca Ferguson loon and PROUD OF IT.

There is nothing shameful about appreciating the only performer who is actually worthy of a recording contract. I think people misconstrue her being consistently brilliant for dullness. Their loss.

RE: Aiden, if leaked votes are to be believed (and lord knows theyve had the bottom two right every time)

Aiden has been struggling recently, coming in around 8th last week.

Is there a link to those leaked votes? I'm curious :o

A Rebecca/Matt/Cher top three would be my ideal right now though. The only thing is that I can't see Matt having an international career like the other two might have the potential to though. I personally think that the standard at the top is far better than last year.

I know it is inevitable that she will be, but personally I'd love Cher not to be in the top three. I thought last week's 'Stay' was a good, solid effort from her. But tonight, for the first time, I actually agreed with Cowell ... she was just copycatting and sounded like a very good karaoke singer doing ESOM. Her voice just isn't that great.

Now Rebecca! All I can say is ... I'd buy her records based on her voice ... she doesn't need any visual gimmicks. She is NOT all fur coat and no knickers.

Kath

1. Rebecca - 10/10

2. Matt - 10/10

3. Cher - 9.5/10

4. Treyc - 9.5/10

5. Aiden - 9/10

6. One Direction - 7.5/10

7. Paije - 7/10

8. Katie - 7/10

9. Mary - 6/10

10. Wagner - 2/10

RE: Aiden, if leaked votes are to be believed (and lord knows theyve had the bottom two right every time)

Aiden has been struggling recently, coming in around 8th last week.

 The leaked votes I see every week on Digital Spy forum has only been right once (last week). You must see different ones to me then...

Cher - It lacked her usual oomph. Even though I don't normally like her she always has a strong presence and this song just felt rather lazy and relaxed. Still pretty good and much better than her earlier performances. Loved the random street chav who embraced her towards the end. 7/10

Mary - I am bored of Mary. Like many in the competition, the novelty has worn off. This was extremely flat throughout and made me cringe. Such a shame for such a talented singer and a song that she should've destroyed [in a wonderful way] 3/10

Katie - She looked like Nicola Roberts and Sarah Jessica Parker had a love child tonight. Loved the hair for the first time. Just was a bit uneasy with the vocals. The song suited her voice perfectly but she struggled to make it through the chorus. 6/10

Aiden - I am so happy he is back and fighting. After the amazing Mad World, I rather felt he'd lost it but the past two weeks have been solid and tonight even more so. He is so raw and was flawless. You can so tell he's been coached to smile more, but it just made his awkward facial expressions even more awesome ha. 10/10

Rebecca - I am so bored of her getting dreary songs with hardly any life to them. She is a f***ing amazing talent and needs something different. Upbeat? A big ballad? A more RnB number? Anything but these hideous soul things she gets lumbered with. Nasty track aside, she was fautless as usual. 9/10

Paije - For the first time I actually liked the guy. It was entertaining and I loved his movements. He has fun and becomes more of a popstar each week. Wasn't that keen on the Outkast bit but loved the rest. 7/10

Wagner - Bored now. It was horrific. He is a person is still hilarious but Louie is trying to make him sing more 'serious' songs and that's not what Wagner is about. 2/10

Matt - The song sucks and has been done to death but I can't seem to fault this guy at all. He is becoming a bit one trick pony though that doesn't matter when you have THAT voice and THAT much passion and soul when you perform. 9/10

Trey C - She struggled a bit but was pretty much spot on. She just doesn't stand out and I wasn't moved in the slightest. 6/10

One Direction - The ethnic one's little wail made my day  Other than that I do admit they blend well as a group and a couple of them are good singers. They're just so arrogant and annoying and for some reason I get the impression they smell of feet. I dunno why. The performance was GAY and felt like Glee, High School Musical and every American teenage cliche had been stuck in a blender. 6/10

Cher Lloyd: ADORE HER! Everyone knows that, and I was actually thinking she would be pretty crap compared to comments on here, but she really wasn't THAT bad. Better than last week? AS IF. But I'll be shocked if she manages to pull off something as good as last week again, but that was a very solid performance from her. Probs my 3rd fave of her performances behind 'Stay' and 'Hard Knock Life', but was a very solid effort! Maybe I'm just blinded by my love for her, but I don't care! 9 out of 10

Mary Byrne: WOW. This was awful  Boring, out of tune and out of time. Awful. 2 out of 10

Katie Waissel: Pixie Lott meets Diana Vickers meets Gwen Stefani, looks wise tonight. WHERE'S THE POWER IN THE CHORUS?! I'm a supporter of Katie, but that was not good. At all! 4 out of 10

Aiden Grimshaw: Beautiful performance. This is the Aiden we've been missing  Intense without being over dramatic when it doesn't need to be. 9 out of 10

Paije Richardson: He's awful. I'm really not connecting with him. Very mediocre. But then again, i'm not a fan of Gnarls Barkley/Cee-Lo and he has that tone to his voice. So bleh. 3 out of 10

Rebecca Fergusson: First things first, this $h!ts all over Gamu's completely overrated rendition  She was really good this week, but again, I want to see something NEW from her. But fantastic song choice for her. 9 out of 10

Wagner: NO COMMENT. The fact he did Elvis is bad enough :puke: 1 out of 10

Matt Cardle: SUBLIME Song choice for him! He manages to pull off something like this so, so well. He's shown he's versatile enough to deserve a place in the final now. I'm on the Matt supporters bandwagon! (A month or two late, but hey, I'm here now!) 9.5 out of 10

Trey-C Cohen: What's with the Danyl comparisons on here? She can SING in tune, instead of shouting out of tune! plus she isn't an arrogant and cocky twat! She gave that a bloody good go. But I agree with Dannii, I'm struggling to identify her as her own person/artist... 8.5 out of 10

One Direction: Very good performance tonight. Their best since 'Torn', easily. 8 out of 10

It's a shame if that's what Britain has reduced itself too. :( Rebecca has been consistantly sensational every week. However, the last contestant who was this consistant was Rhydian - and look where he came, and who he finished second to. :drama:

Proof that the public can get it wrong. So when Simon says "i have faith in the public", Leon Jackson proved this is bollocks. :)
