Mel B to receive honorary doctorate for campaign work

 

Mel B will be awarded an honorary doctorate for her charity work supporting survivors of domestic abuse.

 

The Spice Girl will receive the doctorate from Leeds Beckett University at a ceremony next month.

 

Brown has become a campaigner for domestic abuse victims, after leaving what she described as an abusive relationship.

 

In 2018, she was made a patron of Women’s Aid, and in 2022, she received an MBE for services to charitable causes and vulnerable women.

 

Speaking in a statement, the singer called the doctorate "an incredible honour".

 

Brown has also been studying at the university in her native city and said she had completed a course in trauma-informed care.

 

"Since leaving my marriage I’ve told friends and family I’d love to go to uni, but I don’t think people took it seriously," she said.

 

"But this gave me an opportunity to actually do it.

 

"I am proud to feel part of this university in my home town and proud to have come here as Melanie Brown, proud to have worked alongside other students and received excellent guidance from the teaching staff," she added.

 

Leeds Beckett vice chancellor professor Peter Slee said: "I would like to congratulate Melanie Brown MBE on this honorary degree.

 

"As a child of this city who reached the top of her industry, then used her platform to advocate for those who shared her hardships, Melanie is exactly the type of citizen we are here to champion."

 

In March, Brown spoke to the BBC about how she moved into her mum's bungalow, after she left ex-husband Stephen Belafonte.

 

"I wasn't just emotionally and physically abused, there was all the financial abuse, too,” she said.

 

"I didn't realise that I didn't have as much money as I thought I had. So I literally had to eat humble pie, live with my mum."

 

Belafonte, a film producer, has repeatedly denied the claims against him made by the singer.

Yeah, and before that she mentioned that she had quite a bad day at work and that 'there's always next year', which one can asume is Spice-related based on her comments afterwards.

 

I think they probably had a business meeting with the girls and it all went south again, proving that nothing will be done this year.

 

It does also confirm that Geri is not up for touring, but what I dont get is the denying the group from doing other things like the documentary or other venures?... I really dont get this and it f***ing sucks.

If anyone hasn't seen her stories, that was one story amongst a few of her spending some time with some hens, so that's a reason why she wrote their names like that.

I read a book to my class which had hens in it and some were called Victoria and David Peckham 🤣 also had Hennifer Lopez, Albert Eggstein, Margaret Hatcher and Mary Poopins. I couldn’t stop laughing when I was reading

Even in some interviews she did with these performances, she tended to get draped with extra leather fabrics and what not. I've wondered too if that's why she's practically dressed as a satellite in the second Word Up video...as some sort of distraction. It's to note, though, just how body positive she was through that first pregnancy.

 

I've always really liked Word Up. It reinvents the original into something new and interesting...and something that fits Mel. It's my favorite Spice cover song (group or solo). It did have a few things working against it. The first video was too edgy for her fanbase at the time. Did the chair performances hurt her chart prospects? Um...maybe? I feel like any time the girls have shown any lack of dedication with a project, it hurts its chances.

Yes I think she probably felt a bit shy about her body image right after giving birth, like any woman would do. The press and public were relenteless on this type of crap back in the day (and still havent changed that much to be hones!)

 

Agree about Word Up being the best Spice-related cover. It's a great take on it and does something new with the original, which is the opposite of what the Spices usually do. I think it is definitely Top5 solo Spice for me.

 

The reasons why it flopped were vast. The promo wasnt great for it, but also the 'dark Spice' vibe was not something people were very used to at the time either. It probably just felt too dark for many people...

 

I love it though!
