Apple will unveil a major iTunes development this afternoon (Tuesday 16) at 3pm (GMT).

The Apple.com site posted a message yesterday saying, “Tomorrow is just another day. That you'll never forget […] Click back here tomorrow for an exciting announcement from iTunes.”

Below that are four clocks showing the time of the announcement in California, New York, London and Tokyo.

The rumour mill went into overdrive yesterday, attempting to either decipher or second-guess the message.

The top three rumours circulating on tech blogs are: a subscription-based version of iTunes; a cloud-based version of iTunes; The Beatles' catalogue finally being made available (exclusively) on iTunes.

Experience tells us it is impossible to predict what Apple's next move will be, but we will report on the details of the announcement as soon as it is made this afternoon.

I'll go for the outsider choice of price increase :heehee:

Realistically I'd go for subscription version of iTunes. Maybe something to do with Spotify.

I'll go for the Beatles, as iTunes already (sort of) has a subscription service for some artists with the iTunes pass.

That'd be my preferred option, too.

This is on the Guardian website

The long-running dispute between Apple Inc and the Beatles' Apple Corp appeared closer to resolution last night with Apple Corp apparently relenting on its refusal to allow the group's catalogue on the computer maker's iTunes music store.

The expected announcement, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal, will settle a dispute that's run since 1978 when the group's representatives first brought a lawsuit against Apple Computer for trademark infringement over the both the name and symbol used by the California company.

Over the years, there have been several lawsuits and several settlements, including one in which the technology company agreed not to enter the music business. With the launch of iTunes, lawyers for the surviving Beatles or their widows sued again.

This time, a British judge found in the computer maker's favour and ordered the Beatle's promotional arm and label to pay its legal costs.

"We love the Beatles, and it has been painful being at odds with them over these trademarks," Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in 2007. "It feels great to resolve this in a positive manner, and in a way that should remove the potential of further disagreements in the future."

Neil Aspinall, the late combative manager of Apple Corp said, "It is great to put this dispute behind us and move on."

But the two parties continued feuding. Two years ago Sir Paul McCartney offered assurances that the group's work would soon be made available. The remastering and release of the entire catalog last year appears to have brought online availability of the catalogue closer.

But terms of the latest deal have not been revealed, and sources warn Apple – the label – could still pull the plug

It's definitely the Beatles, they're all over the itunes homepage! Expect the itunes chart to be flooded with Beatles songs!!!

How great! <_<

Definitely not a life changing announcement, zzz.

I thought it was going to be something very exciting :P

To be honest, until today I didn't even know that their music wasn't available on iTunes before!

It is The Beatles. Available now. So what will this do to Sunday's chart

It will all go cack

One hell of a messy chart if the Beatles tracks do appear, it just pushes all the good recent music down the chart more than anything, and artists will delay their material from getting released.

Little to no difference in my opinion. Possible one song will scrape the top 40 (probably Hey Jude), with 1 or 2 more in the top 75. Anyone who would want The Beatles on their iPod will have had it there by now.

Not very exciting :(

Won't mess up the chart that much anyway. The odd one may creep through to the top 40 but that's about it.

We just have to wait and see how the iTunes chart will reflect with all the Beatles tracks floating around, personally I'm not so looking forward to this. :drama:

Someone will have to email Reggie in advance, he be very clueless come Sunday :nocheer:

So what's new... :w00t:

So the day of ultimate liberty has finally come - without any warning or real build up! (Dramatic enough? lol)

I don't think we're having an all Beatles top10 or anything unless there's some huge stupid media campaign fronted by Syco/for charity/heavy promo/etc.

I would guess many Beatles fans or those interested would be more likely to be traditional buyers who would prefer not only albums, but physicals. As their digitally remastered physical albums only at best managed fleeting top10 re-entries i honestly don't see the (higher sales) singles chart being too overwhelmed. Especially at this supercompetitive and high sales period of the year - they'll struggle for top10 imho. Sure the albums will take a small boost again.

What will be interesting in the next few years will be to see how this affects the all time sellers list, as the beatles have basically been unable to add to their singles tally until now. I could see trickle selling of cherrypicks taking a few higher into the list and maybe even some crossing the million? I think they potentially will be good catalogue sellers over time.

Incidentally, anyone know their next closest to 1mil (i know they have a couple over already)? Also could again rival Cliff and Elvis in total single sales terms

When was the last time Radio 1 played any Beatles songs? Must be years ago.

Beatles albums now £7.99 at Amazon.

dear gawd, look at that US list. Will all download sites have the Beatles and not just iTunes now?

even though The Beatles aren't my kind of music, I did download a few songs/albums and I'm beginning to enjoy them so much  It's great that iTunes have finally been given these to add, because now an entire generation (me included) can be introduced properly to the band that changed British music, it also makes iTunes the largest source for music once again, they must be the only site to have The Beatles and an entire PWL back catalogue to brag about :)
