Somehow I doubt Taio Cruz has much of a fanbase. Otherwise he might be able to actually sell an album in decent quantities, or follow up a hit with at least a moderate charting. As it happens, he fails at both of those things.

I disagree - IMO it is Taio's fans who are propping this up, not McFly's.

Oh yeah, cos that really helped several of Taio's own singles, his album and the Tinchy Stryder single from two weeks ago didn't it...

:cheer: for Olly up to 2 and XFF down to 3

boo at BEPs up to 6 :(

on next weeks releases, Poison is the only one that will get top 10- it could be number 1 with her XF performance I think, shame as I really want Ellie to get a week there or it never will :( I wouldnt be surprised if Michael Jackson didnt make the top 10 or even 20, just cant see it being very big

and SOF>>>>>>US, although both are great rock classics

Poison will chart in the top 3, it's good but doesn't have number one potential whereas Ellie does, and David Guetta will get top ten and Michael Jackson top 20 (I can't really see the song being that big, most people have got over his death)

Yeah, Taio just gets lucky with one catchy song per album, he hasn't got a huge fanbase as such, people just buy his song if they like it

Are we choosing to ignore his last 6 top 20s that include 2 numbers 1s. Plus a lot of acts are singles artists but dont sell ,much of an album. Obviously he is one of them

I agree. He is more of a singles artist like a lots of acts are these days. The Saturdays for example. Singles do well but noone cares enough to buy the album

I don't think Taio Cruz does have a huge devoted fanbase, tbh. Sure, he'll have some fans, but you never really hear about lots of people who are obsessed with him, like you do with Justin Bieber, Eminem, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, etc. in the US, and the likes of JLS, Cheryl Cole, Dizzee Rascal, The Saturdays, etc. in the UK, and Shakira everywhere else in the world. Do you know what I mean? Like I never really hear anybody say "Taio Cruz is my idol", or I never go to a friends house and see posters of him all over the walls and stuff.

Taio Cruz does make absolutely massive hits though, so his being on a song would help it a lot. If you think Dynamite was big in the UK, go to the US for a couple of weeks! :o

But The Saturdays have had one successful album (Chasing Lights), and Headlines has surely sold more than Taio Cruz's last album.

Even singles artists can usually get moderately successful albums. Just look at Vengaboys, B*witched etc. in the late 1990s. They were "singles artists" but still managed to get one album Platinum, because they built up a string of steady hits. Taio Cruz's album sales are just EMBARRASSING. I'm struggling to think of another example of a supposed "singles act" doing so badly albums-wise... two #1 singles from Rokkstar and all it has to show for it is a few weeks in the top 75 (and that's with a re-release) - I doubt it's even sold 100k yet!

And he clearly doesn't have much of a fanbase. As L!am said, he can strike gold with a hit and sell loads of singles. If he doesn't have a monster smash, he flops. That's a sign of having little fanbase - the casual fans aren't interested. And that's why he struggles to sell albums too. He relies way too much on casual fans.

I don't think MJ is released until the week after now according to his official site. Might be wrong.

There is a massive difference between people like Justin Bieber, Eminem, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus. These have had massive wordwide success or are the it thing at the moment. He obv must have fans if he is getting numbers 1s in the UK and USA. Its far to early for people to cal him in idol anyway. He only been around 2 years.

Im not saying the album did well. It did $h!te. He is very much a singles artist. The Satiurdays are too.

"If he doesn't have a monster smash, he flops. That's a sign of having little fanbase" No its not. It just means that the follow up wasnt as good of a song.

I've heard nothing of that David Guetta and Rihanna song- but I guess the names will get it into the top 10

that would be three top 10 hits for Rihanna in a week :o when was the last time that happened?

Taio Cruz isn't the type to have a fanbase tbh, so his name on 'Shine A Light' won't boost it incredibly. I agree with Silver Rocket that it's the song, and it has crossover appeal. It's a nice pop song, which is what everybody will like.

But that's my point anyway. Yes, the song is poor, so the casual fans that he depends on don't buy it, and thus he flops. If he had more of a fanbase then his chart history wouldn't be so erratic - or at least not to the extent of following up #1 singles with a song outside the top 40. It's not like he can use the excuse of "everyone already has it on my album"! So to go back to the original point, the very idea that Taio Cruz is keeping up McFly doesn't wash with me as he doesn't have a strong fanbase. Shine A Light simply has more appeal to casual fans outside of McFly's fanbase - and yes, that may have something to do with Taio Cruz attracting them, but it's not attracting HIS fanbase - it's simply attracting the casual fans that he himself depends on.

Yes, The Saturdays are singles artists, I wasn't denying that. I was only disagreeing with the point that most singles artists have poor album sales which isn't really true. I mean, sure, they don't sell as much as Kings of Leon or Amy Winehouse but they can still sell MODERATELY well. And most pop artists completely kick Taio Cruz's ass in terms of albums sales. Even ones who are only on their first album. The fact is he's doing much worse albums-wise than most of his contemparies.

Well, Glee Cast had 3 songs in the top 10 on iTunes (Don't Stop Believin', Halo/Walking on Sunshine and It's My Life/Confessions II, I think?), but I think one of them missed top 10 officially.

I can't remember before that. Maybe Michael Jackson in 2009?

Also, some people will tell you it was Eminem, as Not Afraid, Love the Way You Lie and Airplanes were all in the top 10 officially at the same time (I think for more than one week too), but I don't really think that counts, since you can't buy the version of Airplanes that Eminem is on.

I still think Mcflys song doing well has in some big way got to do with Taio Cruz. So out of there last 12 songs. This just happenes to be the only track to have appeal outside their fanbase. But also just happens to be featuring one of the big acts of the moment which I still stand by he very much is singles wise.

As a fan of McFly, I'd say that the song as simply a McFly song has appeal out of the fanbase, however the addition of Taio Cruz likely, for some non-fans at least, makes the song credible enough to buy as McFly are uncool usually. Hope you get what I mean.

But I do wonder if their sudden appeal to the general music audience again will help their next singles do well, and I think they have songs good enough to keep the good weekly charting (for them at least) up.

Totally agree with you. Obviously its a mix of Mcfly fans, Taio fans and general fans. Ive been a McFly fan from the start so I hope it continues but sadly I dont think it will. They will do well with singles but sadly their albums days are over I think.

I think I'm on the Song, not Taio side of this debate. Party Girl was good and showed a new side to McFly but I think Shine a Light is a bit safer and non offensive. Not saying Taio doesn't add to the song, just that people aren't neccessarily buying it primarily on his name. Also, comparing the 2 videos, its a brave heterosexual man who buys party girl with THAT video!

I don't think Taio has a large hardcore fanbase tbh, I mean he's literally re-released a studio album with nearly every hit he's ever had and a huge new no1 on it and had almost no impact. Compared to say, the saturdays who people are saying are more of a singles act. They may not sell loads of albums but their sales are reasonable, and more in proportion to the number of singles they sell. Dynamite has sold twice any saturdays singles but the album can't even match headlines. Further, the saturdays singles all sell similar amounts (200k ish) which suggest a loyal fanbase versus the yoyoing taio does.

In the same way, look at the amount of sats chat on BJ compared to Taio despite him arguably being bigger. I mean they're also newer and have a forum, does Taio?

Surely McFlys next single and the style of that will establish if any kind of new pattern is emerging from them. I'll admit I've been more impressed with their recent output, and maligned as they are they have produced good pop music, written their own stuff and formed their own label. Bit more than many of their peers manage!
