November 16, 201014 yr Overrated or not, The Beatles made their mark on the music world in a way that will never be forgotten - they went over and dominated the American charts - they also achieved more creatively and commercially in 7 short years than many bands ever will in 3 decade plus long careers. I'm not a huge fan but I do like a lot of their songs/songwriting, I'm sure in their varied back catalogue there is at least 1 Beatles song that you will like. Give them at least some respect. That said - I don't want loads of Beatles tracks in the Top 40. :P

That said - I don't want loads of Beatles tracks in the Top 40. :P Oh, don't get me wrong, I completely credit what they did for British music and I respect how admired they were, I jsut feel they were a little too overrated because of them being so revolutionary, it was like; because they did something new it instantly made them more appealing, like what GaGa is doing now, even though I love her music (but not her personally; used to, but not since she's becoming all talk, no trousers with her new album, just release some material to back up all the hype, I mean seriously).
November 16, 201014 yr What I find hilarious is that you obviously like music (why would you be here otherwise) and you've made no attempt to find out about any music probably pre 1999 (in my humble opinion the worst year on record until this year) If you find The Beatles boring then you'll probably find the likes of Dylan, The Stones, The Who, Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding, The Kinks, The Walker Brothers, Dusty Springfield, Love, The Supremes and James Brown completely boring. Nothing wrong with liking Hip-Hop. Go listen to Danger Mouse's Grey album to hear something new (and amazing) that was done with The Beatles. Personally I think Gaga has been the ONLY interesting thing to happen to pop music in the last 2 years. Oh that and Bonkers probably. I LOVE Bonkers! Such a tune. At least we agree on something! Also, I remember lots of music from before 1999. I have plenty of pre-1999 songs on my mp3 player, and I listen to some everyday. The main difference is, I liked pop music back then, but now I'm more into hip hop. But I'd probably like The Beatles more if I didn't have to listen to them everyday. :( I don't think many people my age will be playing Beatles songs in 30 years time, because all our parents have driven us crazy with it. And I think Lady Gaga is probably as overrated as The Beatles. :( It's a similar thing really. Just generic and boring songs somehow selling bucketloads. :( I cannot fathom how she's so popular, yet people like Britney Spears, who makes like exactly the same songs, isn't getting half of Gaga's success at the moment.

Britney basically destroyed her creer with the mega-meltdown she had and now people often have a really adverse reaction to her as a result. Not much to do with the music at all, which I agree does sound similar to Gaga. I see Gaga as a continuation of what Christina Aguilera was doing around the time of Dirrty/Beautiful/Fighter when she really could have became the most interesting popstar of the last decade. Then she came back with that 40s retro stuff and the moment was gone. I do empathise if you have to listen to any artist every day. I was lucky growing up because neither of my parents played much music around the house when I was a kid. I got a copy of The White Album off my mum, Bowie's Diamond Dogs and a Stones compilation off my Dad, bought Kate Bush's The Kick Inside and off I went. I was basically done with buying and listening to much pop music by the time I was 15. Course I loved pop before that whether it was Abba, Queen, Adam and the Ants, Gary Numan or whatever was in the Top 10. Hell I remember liking a Barbara Dickson song(!)
November 16, 201014 yr I'm seventeen and my Dad has been cramming them into my ears for the past... well... seveteen years, and I feel exactly the same. THey're a hideously overrated band, despite them being a revolution to the British music scene. Oh, and John Lennon was awful. Period. Obviously never listened to John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band then. Or Cold Turkey. Granted most of the other stuff is pretty crap. (Although I do still listen to some of it!)
November 16, 201014 yr I am not sure Beatles are the best thing ever happened to music so I could say they are overrated if people believe that. However I cannot say they are overrated because they have been (like it or not) one of the most important acts in music history + revolutional + creative for their times. They may sound weird, old and retro now because they ARE! Music changes with time, almost every song you will listen to that is as old as the Beatles or even older will sound old-weird-boring. This doesn't affect their classic value imo, even if I have never added anything appart from 4-5 songs of the Beatles discography into my ipod playlist. And I am 21 and my parents have NO Beatles albums! (if that makes any difference)

ABBA is another group actually that did exactly what Lady Gaga is doing now, but decades ago. I think Eh Eh and Alejandro could basically be ABBA songs. I could very easily imagine the likes of Madonna (Dance in the Dark is literally a Madonna song, imo), Timbaland, Gwen Stefani, Rihanna, Nelly Furtado, Ke$ha, Chris Brown, Depeche Mode, Kylie Minogue, Boney M, etc. doing Gaga songs, and there's probably a plethora of other artists I don't know that could be added to the list. Whilst I may not like their music, and find it boring, I can't deny they've definitely had a massive impact on music. November 16, 201014 yr The Beatles could be going top 40 if Hey Jude keeps rising :o if not this week, definitely next week People are forgetting that what made The Beatles as great as they are, wasnt just how amazing their songs were- its the fact that they totally transformed themselves from a standard 60s rock and roll band ( simple songs like She Loves You, I want to hold your hand, Hard Days Night etc.) but then moved on to new musical territories, and produced sophisticated, complicated and brilliant songs like Hey Jude, I Am The Walrus, Strawberry Fields Forever- it was like a totally different band- and this sheer creativity and commercial success, plus influence on culture has never been matched, this had never been done before and is still seen as revolutionary and it was them that helped shape music really call them overrated if you must, but no other band even comes close, fact Edited November 16, 201014 yr by chart wizard
November 16, 201014 yr I know alot of people will prob think they did alot for music...which they did. But i cannot stand their music at all, it would be so boring for them to fill up alot of spaces on the chart.

That is personal opinion. Fair enough. I have a problem with people saying they are over-rated. They are the world's best selling group whose songs are still being covered in different ways because they are basically good songs, which means they warrant all the attention they still get.
November 16, 201014 yr Does anyone know whether it was featured on any of the main channels during their news bulletins? The songs played will rocket up the charts.
November 16, 201014 yr What does over rated mean? Does it mean that you don't enjoy them as much as you are told you should? I personally dont like many Beatles songs but I would never say they are overrated because I have read all about the new ground they broke with recording techniques, the way they changed the pop music business.

Listen the early Beatles albums and then listen to Let It Be and Abbey Road and they could be two different bands rather than the same band seven or eight years apart. Anybody who says they hate everything the Beatles ever recorded just hasn't listened properly. I'm no fan of Madonna but wouldn't say I hate everything she's ever done. There's enough variety for me to like at least some of her work. Before The Beatles the charts were full of what we would now think of cover versions. Even the early Beatles albums were a mix of covers and their own songs. The Beatles broke the mould by writing most of their own songs. A lot of it is an age thing though. I didn't really start to appreciate them until a series of rereleases in the mid 70s when I was in my mid teens. Before that I'd thought they were overrated simply because of the number of people who thought they were the best band ever. The Beatles will still sell for many decades to come. So will Abba. I'm not sure how many other acts will.

Sadly the news bulletins will have been dominated by some rich bloke getting engaged to some bint. They couldn't have chosen a worse day for getting free publicity.
November 17, 201014 yr If they were actually relevant these days their albums would fill the top 15 after 24 hours, no? By the way, I dont care about the albums. On iTunes singles chart they are flopping. ^_^

November 17, 201014 yr I'm just saying, but anyone who didn't download "Here, There or Everywhere," or it's parent album 'Revolver' now that they can do so legally, has wasted their day. Also, anyone who thinks the Chemical Brothers were revolutionary should check out 'Tomorrow Never Knows' on the same album. It more or less invented dance music.
November 17, 201014 yr Oh dear lord. The Beatles are the most overrated music act in the history of music acts. Just saying
November 17, 201014 yr Oh come on, saying The Beatles are overrated is beyond silly. Definition: o·ver·rate –verb (used with object), -rat·ed, -rat·ing. to rate or appraise too highly; overestimate: I think you overrate their political influence. So basically saying they're overrated is not saying "I don't like their music" (which is what most people mean when they say it) but basically denying all that they did for popular music - because that's why they're so rated in the first place o_O Just say the former next time and you won't look so silly. To be honest saying ANY act is overrated is kind of silly 90% of the time because most of them got to be rated for some reason. Most people are utterly ignorant of WHY though, which is why they say it in the first place. And as to the person saying they're not relevant: :manson: The fact that just a few weeks ago they charted at #4 and #6 with albums that are almost 40 years old kind of proves that to be STUPID. And the fact that their 1 compilation was one of the biggest-selling albums in the WORLD in the 2000s. But wait, you said "I don't care about the albums" because it shows your entire point to be utterly stupid, I guess
