Maybe Natalia Kills? She has been getting some hype and Mirrors is getting an official release next year.

I'm not sure if Natalia Kills will be eligible - she had a top 20 hit as Verbalicious, but then this is clearly a million miles away from Don't Play Nice so I've got no idea...

I don't think she'll be eligible. 'Don't Play Nice' is one of the best #11 smashes ever though ! <3

I'm clueless as to 2011's list, I do find it interesting to see how well previous nominees have done though. From 2010:

Ellie Goulding - Just about fulfilled the hype now with a second top 5 hit, the album's picked up decent sales.

Marina - not done it unfortunately, didn't even manage a top 10 hit from her lead single although the follow-ups have done reasonably and she's been a good live draw.

Delphic - done some good stuff although nowhere near the success they were hyped up to have. White Lies did far better the previous year.

Hurts - got there eventually, it's still hardly been a vintage year though.

The Drums - been more of a live draw. Don't get the hype at all, they've been a relative flop given the amount the NME was backing them this time last year.

Of the other ten nominees, Owl City has had by far the biggest success albeit with just one song. Devlin has done alright as well.

But if the rule is 20, Jessie might still be eligible, it doesn't look as if she'll make top 20 this week? But remember, Lady Gaga was 6th or 7th in Sound Of 2009, and look at her now! Oh, and I forgot Spark off my list!!! Revolving  And also Scarlette Fever!

Don't get the hype around Jessie J at all and her single is totally forgettable

I think the list of 5 acts would do, 10 is far too many for all of them to have at least decent success.

Have to agree with SKOB on this. I've read some comments about Jessie J being the next big thing then to hear 'Do It Like A Dude' for the first time, I just sighed. It's crap!!!

Lady Gaga came 5th-7th mainly because a huge minority of the judges realised that she wasn't quite what the list was about - she had a massive label push and had already started doing really well stateside. It was painfully obvious she was going to be huge, so I think she was discounted by a lot of the judges - hence the lower position. The So20xx is intended to hype up artists from more obscure backgrounds, and Lady Gaga was always a bit of an odd choice to go on the list...

I agree the song is utter garbage, but I think she has more potential outside of that song from other stuff I've heard.

Like 'Price Tag' and 'Who You Are' which are both fantastic/future Top 5's for sure. (Dependant on whether they are actually used as singles/how well the album sells etc...)

Exactly

I get the feeling 'Do It Like A Dude' is just a promo single, it hasn't been promoted as hard enough as it should've been for a debut single. I reckon 'Price Tag' will be her big push, and is easily far more likeable than 'Do It Like A Dude' which should bring in some new fans and be a good way to launch an album off of ^_^.

Good to see a few people saying Sunday Girl. I've seen 'Stop Hey' on NME TV a couple of times now and it's really good, released on Jan 16th (or therabouts) so she has a good chance hopefully.

This. It doesn't hurt when she looks like that either...

An absolute SHOCKER of a list:

James Blake

Anna Calvi

Daley

Esben & the Witch

Jessie J

Clare Maguire

Mona

The Naked & Famous

Nero

Jai Paul

The Vaccines

Warpaint

Jamie Woon

Wretch 32

Yuck

No Spark, no Sunday Girl, no Sky Ferreira, no Florrie - none of the acts that look like they may be getting a big label push at some point next year. This is the first year in ages where I've genuinely not known of more than six on the list. I've heard of:

James Blake

Jessie J

Clare Maguire

The Naked & Famous

Jamie Woon

Wretch 32

And I've heard music by all apart from James Blake. It's going to be another year of disappointments I reckon if they're hoping they're predicting the big stars of the year! I genuinely only see Clare Maguire and Jessie J becoming big successes out of any of the ones on that list, and Clare's going to be an album seller rather than anything else. TNAF screams one-hit wonder status, and I don't see any of the other three becoming successful in the mainstream.

BBC Sound of 2011 announced

Yuck, Warpaint and Esben & The Witch have all been placed on the list for the BBC’s Sound of 2011.

The final 15 names were compiled from recommendations from more than 160 UK tastemakers and the winning five names will be revealed in January.

Other artists on this year's longlist include singer-songwriters Anna Calvi, Daley and Clare Maguire as well as cutting-edge producers and vocalists also feature heavily such as James Blake, Nero, Jai Paul and Jamie Woon.

BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra head of music, George Ergatoudis says the Beeb’s list stands out as the definitive one thanks to the rigour applied to its compilation and its comprehensive range of contributors.

He adds, “Over the years it has helped music fans discover some fantastic artists and while some have disappeared without a trace there have also been notable successes including Dizzee Rascal, Keane, the Kaiser Chiefs, Plan B, Adele and Florence + The Machine, to name just a few.”

The full list is as follows:

Anna Calvi

Clare Maguire

Daley

Esben & The Witch

Jai Paul

James Blake

Jamie Woon

Jessie J

Mona

Nero

The Naked & Famous

The Vaccines

Warpaint

Wretch 32

Yuck

========================================

From the list I know

Clare Maguire

Esben & The Witch

James Blake

Jessie J

Mona

The Naked & Famous

Warpaint

I hope Clare Maguire gets it. I wouldn't mind The Naked & Famous, Esben & The Witch to get top 5 as well, not worried about the rest.

I've only heard of Jessie J, James Blake and Clara Maguire :o

Lots of new artists to check tonight then, hopefully there are some gems among them ! :cheer:

Claire Maguire or James Blake will be #1. Both are probably the ones to watch for the Critics award at the BRITs (if they're still doing that??) and both have major label pushing.

The Vaccines will be top 3 aswell.

Jai Paul, Warpaint, Esben and James Blake...

Great stuff

I played two of these bands (Esben & the Witch, Yuck) on my radio show before they were even signed, and I didn't think I'd see them on this list. Great stuff. Also nice to see The Naked and Famous and the Vaccines there.

I should point out that Yuck have featured on the Sound of... polls before. A few years ago, Cajun Dance Party make the longlist back when it was still a top 10. Yuck contains 2 members of that band, so I'm surprised that they've slipped through the net.
