And why are you so negative about him ?

Give the bloke a chance can`t you. He cannot be compared to Joe or Leon............he is more mature, is a musician and has a track record of writing decent songs.

I don't see myself as being negative - just pragmatic. It is a well established pattern that XF winners, especially male ones, have a very limited shelf life.

As for his song-writing abilities - if they are so great, how come no-one has ever heard of him until recently?

Because he's never been given the chance? You're surely not that naive are you? Thousands upon thousands of unknown acts throughout the world write and release good music in all genres every year, there simply isn't the capacity to hear about them all.
^ To be fair, there's a plethora of great artists out there who don't make it big, because they either don't try hard enough, or simply can't get any support to help promote themselves. But is Matt one of them?

My point was - how does anyone *know* whether he's a good songwriter or not, if all we've heard is one song Cowell picked for him?

He used to be part of a band called 'Seven Summers' who were good songwriters. Did he take the role of main person in the band?

Judging by the year end radio airplay chart is it any wonder any act takes to the X-factor to get a break. The UK music industry has alot to answer for it seems that going to the bloody BRIT SCHOOL (Jessie J, Ellie, Kate, Amy) or the X-factor are two of the few ways to guarantee a record deal, radio support and press interest. There are just not enough avenues in the UK for talent to make it big or be taken on by record companies.

Matt is no more or less talented than many acts out there but it is the British way to knock things and wish failure on people.

shame to see White Lies so low down but I guess people are waiting for the album which might get top 3 and then fall quite quickly :(

people have a go at Matt Cardle's song but that Jessie J song is abysmal, not a surprise it's selling well on ITunes though

He's released an album with his band Seven Summers - have you seriously not heard about this? People mention it all the time on here.

Quite true. I think the main way for a British artist to get a fanbase is through the Internet now, to be honest. A few radio stations I listen to have a show where they invite new, un-signed local artists to perform, and they have a lengthy interview with them, and play some of their songs, but these shows are usually on late in the night, so nobody listens to them (or they're on late at night because nobody listens to them, I don't know).

Not so sure about the last sentence though. I've noticed a lot of people in this country do seem to enjoy seeing people fail, compared to other countries I've been to, but this isn't just a problem in the music industry, and other factors such as the media play a role in this. But even in the charts, it does seem that people aren't very upset when UK artists such as Roll Deep, Nadine Coyle, Alesha Dixon, Tinchy Stryder, etc. "flop".

What happened with One Shot?

It peaked way too early because the video made it climb quickly and it couldn't maintain being as high as #6 without its full release.

I think it will stay high up, as 'One Shot' is more the lesser of the three evils from their first album and EYS is going to appeal to a wider range of people and will keep on climbing as the JLS haters will like it :)

Oh. That's like a less successful version of Airplanes then. I remember Airplanes got to #2 like over a month before it was released, or something crazy! :o

:o

I sense another One Shot situation

I hope not! 'Eyes Wide Shut' is by far my favourite JLS song.

Airplanes got to #1 about a month and a half before its physical release and the eventual release didn't make it climb at all IIRC.

I was surprised they didn't cancel/pull forward the release.

Yeah, similar with What's My Name? actually. I think the original release date was near the end of January. Clearly things didn't go to plan there!

Also, I was thinking, if Matt Cardle didn't exist, Rihanna's 2nd single would've got to #1 only 3 weeks after her first (if I worked it out correctly)! :o I guess it was a bit more extreme in the US, when her 2nd single got to #1 -2 weeks after her first.

What's My Name actually went to number one before Only Girl in the US, I think. It was a record.
