What's My Name actually went to number one before Only Girl in the US, I think. It was a record.

Yeah, that's why I put "-2 weeks".

But yeah, that's so crazy! :o I guess it's the fact that they include radio airplay in the charts (which, btw, I'm SO happy they don't do in the UK). What's My Name? got to #1 on massive first week sales, so it's lower airplay didn't really matter, and I don't think there were any songs that were doing amazingly well in both sales and airplay at the time (Not Afraid by Eminem and We R Who We R by Ke$ha did similar things), whilst Only Girl's first week's sales couldn't get it to #1, because it had more competition at the time, but it climbed to #1 after like 2 or 3 months due to its airplay increasing, and still decent sales.

T.I. had a similar thing happen to him. His 1st single, Whatever You Like was #1 for 3 weeks, then Pink replaced him at #1, but for only one week, then Whatever You Like re-climbed to #1 for 2 more weeks, then T.I. replaced himself at #1 with his 2nd single, Live Your Life (with Rihanna), then Britney Spears got to #1, but again, for only one week, then oddly enough, it was his 1st single that re-climbed to #1, for another 2 weeks, then, for the 2nd time, he replaced himself at #1 with Live Your Life being #1 for 4 weeks, then Beyonce got to #1, and yet again, only for 1 week, and then Live Your Life re-climbed to #1 again.

So in those 4 months, T.I. was #1 for 13 weeks, his songs climbed to #1 6 times, and he replaced himself at #1 twice! :o

But I'm glad we don't include airplay in our charts, or else we'd get ridiculous chart runs like that, and this way we don't have to worry about having the Black Eyed Peas at #1 for 26 weeks...

Also, this made me think, when was the last time a song got to #1 3 times in the UK? It's not happened since Live Your Life in the US, but it must've been decades since it happened int he UK! :o

WMN? and OG(ITW) were US #1s for opposite reasons - WMN? because the other songs had low airplay and OG(ITW) because the other songs had low sales.

I'm pretty sure it hasn't happened since at least the late 60s. A few songs did it in the 50s and 60s but none since AFAIA.

Oh, sorry, I thought you meant ~2 weeks and were unsure of how many it was! It's a bizarre scenario.

Yeah, a lot of songs have massive debuts in the US then plummet. I know the same thing happens in the UK, but it's less extreme because the airplay isn't considered whereas in the US songs are put on itunes before they really have any traction on radio so they freefall after their fan-boosted debut.

Also like you said, Bad Romance was number one for aaages on US itunes but Empire State of Mind and Ke$ha held it off on the BB chart because of massive airplay (ESoM particularly was played every second song practically on NY radio, apparently). Much prefer our method!

Regarding the "returning to #1" situation, Frankie Laine's "I Believe" had 3 spells in the 50s (and actually holds the record for most weeks at #1), but i think its the only one (though a few have managed 2 spells including the BEPs twice in rapid succession bizarrely)

Jessie J's 'Do It Like A Dude' to #2. :o

Is that because she was on the 6 o'clock news?

Is that because she was on the 6 o'clock news?
Considering she was at number 2 a good hour and a half before 6 o'clock, I'd guess the answer is a resounding NO

Yeah, that was pretty weird with the Black Eyed Peas in 2009. Meet Me Halfway also had 2 runs at #1 on iTunes!

Mini update

2) Jessie J - Do It Like a Dude

11) Nero - You and Me

16) James Blake - Limit To Your Love

26) Professor Green - Jungle

27) Martin Solveig/Dragonette - Hello

71) Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition

74) Eliza Doolittle - Skinny Genes

81) M.I.A. - Paper Planes

Jessie J could have been number one next week had it not been for Bruno Mars.
hopefully Nero will get top 10 soon, I didn't realise how well James Blake was doing, top 10 next week looks likely :o and glad Hello is climbing too :D

You never know yet.

Jessie J #2 :o

Bruno Mars must be #1 on Sunday though, i dont see anything stoping Grenade.

I hope Jessie J does get #01 next week over Bruno, just to see the utterly ridiculous outrage on here and for her to stop that insufferable whiney bore who everyone seems to be bumming, when really he's just an inferior male version of Alicia Keys.

exactly this! i really don't get the hype around him and at the same time don't understand the dislike for jessie

I don't really think Jessie is disliked (on the whole)? Some people might be a bit annoyed about all the hype, but that happens whenever any artist gets popular (including Bruno Mars).

Btw, I LOVE the pic in your sig JakeWild.

Jessie is not far off Rihanna now.

I love Grenade but I think I would rather Jessie get #1.

aye it's probably that too, she has won that sound of 2011 and brits thing so i suppose some people just don't like it when someone gets hyped up like she is being. or they could just not like the song! :P

and thanks! :)

Having now watched the video for Do It Like a Dude (finally), Jessie J reminds me of Nicki Minaj, except she's scarier.

And Tinchy Stryder is already top 60! :o I thought his days would be numbered after In My System, but this looks like it'll be his 3rd top 40 hit since that!
