I just read somewhere that if Rihanna gets to #1 on Sunday, she'll be the first ever solo female to get to #1 for 5 consecutive years (Umbrella in 2007, Take a Bow in 2008, Run This Town in 2009, Only Girl in 2010 and What's My Name? in 2011)! :o The only other solo artist who has done that is Elvis Presley. lol. Rihanna is breaking all sorts of chart records at the moment.

And gosh. Time has gone so quickly. It seems like yesterday Umbrella was #1. :(

Although only 2 of those were solo number 1s.

Who cares? Run This Town was not her song, fair enough, but Jay-Z's part in Umbrella and Drake's part in What's My Name? are both extremely insignificant. Some radio stations don't even play the Jay-Z part of Umbrella.

Thats brilliant! All of them 'Rihanna' songs apart from Run This Town which she only featured on, but thats a real achievement.

Was just about to say same thing.

with Run This Town she really is what made the song as big as it was. her hook really gave the song some magic. like Live your Life & All Of The Lights by Kanye

Exactly, Rihanna made Run This Town be the hit it was. The chorus is what sells songs like those to 'mainstream' audiences.

Umbrella would have been just as big with or without the Jay-Z introduction.

What's My Name would also. I actually prefer the solo version.

she is also the lead singer on both so what does it matter.

I would say bigger - without Jay-Z, I would have bought it.

I agree about Run This Town. Rihanna really stole the show in that song, and to be honest, I suspect most of the general public wouldn't have been able to distinguish between Jay-Z's and Kanye's parts of the song.

Infact, it's a Jay-Z song, as it's from his album, but most of the reviews the song got say the song owes a lot to both Rihanna and Kanye.

For example, this review: http://rap.about.com/od/songreviews/gr/JayZRunThisTown.htm

Jay-Z ran circles around Kanye on "Diamonds (Remix)." Four years later, Kanye returns the favor.

Pros

•An decent showing by Kanye

•Impressive production

Cons

The host (Jay-Z) is overshadowed by his guests

•Rihanna's tepid chorus

Description

•"Run This Town" is the 2nd single from Jay-Z's Blueprint III

•Rumor has it that "Run This Song" was originally slated to appear on Rihanna's album.

•Features Kanye West and Rihanna

Guide Review - Jay-Z - "Run This Town" (Feat. Kanye West, Rihanna) (Roc Nation)

It looks like someone finally got tired of being bullied by “Big Brother.” Roc Nation dropped the ball on the song credit though; it was supposed to read Kanye West Featuring Rihanna,’ because ‘Ye murdered Jay on his own track. But that's not saying much because Jay was running this race on one foot. In other words, Kanye didn’t win, Jay lost.

and this review on Digital Spy: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/singlesr...-this-town.html

Kanye's slick rapping ("Reebok baby, you need to drop some new things, have you ever had shoes without shoestrings?") and Rihanna's "hey-hey" chorus hook make Jay-Z seem surplus to requirements, which surely can't have been the aim.

I love this song, but we can't pretend that it's "only a Jay-Z song", and that Rihanna and Kanye West offered nothing. I'm sure Rihanna being on the track got it the airplay needed to get to #1, for starters.

Made up for Dragonette!

#27 & #66 on iTunes songs & #34 on iTunes Albums :-)

A-listed by Radio 1, hopefully it'll go up next week!

Touching on the "Run This Town" debate discussed earlier. Jay-Z & Billboard actually has Rihanna & Kanye credited as equals to him on the song, rather than the typical "featuring" credit.

"Run This Town" - Jay-Z, Rihanna, & Kanye West

rather than

"Run This Town Feat. Rihanna & Kanye West" - Jay-Z

Wow. I never knew that. Maybe they heard the song, and thought they had to adjust the crediting a little bit. Although in most places I see it as "Jay-Z ft...".

And Empire State of Mind is credited as "Jay-Z + Alicia Keys" on Billboard. Does anybody know if there a difference between a '+' and a '&', or are they just inconsistent?

What is this? The Rihanna discussion thread or the itunes chart thread

Jessie J almost no.1 :D

James Blake has dropped to #21 :( Ah well, hopefully will go top 40 officially which *might* give it a boost again (I know it normally doesn't but LTYL always seems to climb whenever it's played on R1)

White Lies #45, hopefully they won't fall out of the official top 40 at the last second.

i take it the new jls video has been premiered given its top 40 on itunes....i think it will peak between 3-9 just like one shot.its only starting to gain radio airplay now whereas the video will mean the song will rise to the top 10 by next week.its not officially out until 14/2 or something.its hard for an album track to hit no1 unless theres extra tv promo at the right time.

run this town is a no1 for all three artists!!dont try and take it away from any of them just because rihanna for instance is the current darling of the charts!!

Yeah, I wasn't saying Jay-Z doesn't deserve the #1, because obviously he does. As you said, it's a #1 for all the credited artists. Same with Umbrella. It's a #1 for Jay-Z too, however little people think he contributed, he's credited, so it's a #1 for him.

Same with Rihanna. Just because Run This Town wasn't on one of her own albums (but if those rumours are true, it was originally intended for an album of hers anyway), it doesn't mean she contributed nothing to the song and doesn't deserve that #1.

i for one love jayzs part in umbrella - its like an introduction to rihanna!!
JLS - Eyes Wide Shut #32! The beat to it really reminds me a lot of another song, i know its quite a common club beat but i'm trying to think what song it reminds me of..

Tinie Tempah's bit is sooo small

I like it though. One Shot > Love You More > Eyes Wide Shut >>>>>> Beat Again >x100000 Club is Alive and Everybody in Love.

Should be a top 10 hit at the very least. Top 5?

Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone? EWS is basically the carbon copy of it. I love Eyes Wide Shut still though.
