November 20, 201113 yr The X Factor final is a week earlier becuase Wembley Arena was already booked for Saturday the 17th as White Lies are playing there that night. White Lies possibly handing Nirvana the Christmas #1... I like this world.
November 20, 201113 yr Yes White Lies! I loved them already but that makes me love them at least 500% more than I already did
November 20, 201113 yr It's already been pointed out that the X factor single will be on it's 2nd week during the xmas chart battle and only sell perhaps around 150k that week. If every member of the Nirvana group downloads 2 copies (3 are allowed in the chart rules before being excluded as hyping, to the best of my knowledge) then they could secure 184k of sales! Still think they can't do it Steve201? And the no of followers has doubled in a relatively short time so it could be well into 6 figures by the time it matters too.
November 20, 201113 yr No chance Nirvana will be xmas no1, the campaign has only 92k followers! RATM didn't gain ground until the start of December.
November 20, 201113 yr And just because someone has "signed up as a follower" doesn't mean they will actually put their money where their mouse is and buy the track (I'd imagine a fair proportion of them already have the track in the first place)
November 20, 201113 yr I still say Smells is a terrible terrible choice of single-it would be so much more satisying if it was Fairytale Of New York
November 20, 201113 yr Can someone remind the forgetful gits like me how the OCC ballsed things up last year?
November 21, 201113 yr Rock songs are a better choice to compete against X Factor as generally fans of music like Nirvana are much more against X Factor and will actively try to damage X Factor than the type of people who like classic Christmas hits. Personally, I would prefer a nice festive classic like Slade, Wizzard or The Pogues to be campaigned for but not overly fussed.
November 22, 201113 yr Can someone remind the forgetful gits like me how the OCC ballsed things up last year? I don't recall exactly how but they managed to completely mess up counting physical sales that week leading to a lot of inaccurate chart placings - more on the album chart of course. The only mess-ups on the singles top 100 IIRC were:The X Factor Finalists 2010 - Heroes showed up as #18, when it was really #22 (N-Dubz' Girls, JLS' Love You More, McFly feat. Taio Cruz' Shine A Light and Jessie J's Do It Like A Dude showed up as 19-22 when they were really 18-21)Eminem - Not Afraid (#89) and Kylie Minogue - Better Than Today (#90) had their positions transposedKings Of Leon - Sex On Fire (#92) and Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow - Shame (#93) had their positions transposedJourney - Don't Stop Believin' (#94) and Lady Gaga - Bad Romance (#95) had their positions transposed There were loads of minor errors on the album chart but 'Heroes' was the only real major balls-up. Still, the fact there was a balls-up at all was slightly worrying.

November 22, 201113 yr This was the chart error from the Boxing Day 2010 chart you are referring to: DECEMBER 28th: Last night, Millward Brown discovered a bug in the weighting software used to compile the charts, which has affected a number of positions in the charts published on Sunday December 26. As a result, the OCC has decided to re-run all of this week’s Official Charts. In relation to the Top 40 Singles and Albums Charts, the errors are minimal. But if you wish to correct any charts which you publish online, or simply use the attached charts for reference purposes, please feel free. Millward Brown is conducting a thorough review of the processes and systems in light of this error. OCC and Millward Brown apologise for any inconvenience caused. NOTE: During Music Week’s gap week, it was widely reported that Take That’s Progress sold more than 430,000 on its sixth week as the number one album, with Rihanna’s Loud selling 300,000 at number two. Matt Cardle’s When We Colide was also credited with 300,000 sales on its second week as number one single. In reality, a software glitch at Millward Brown, where the OCC data is crunched, caused erroneous upweighting of sales for Christmas Day. The re-run data resulted in more than a million sales being lopped off the original estimate of album sales with Progress being downgraded to 350,328, Loud being re-estimated at 248,933 and When We Collide at 262,952.
November 23, 201113 yr Oh yes, I forgot they messed up the sales of 'Progress', 'Loud' and 'When We Collide' as well.
November 23, 201113 yr It's already been pointed out that the X factor single will be on it's 2nd week during the xmas chart battle and only sell perhaps around 150k that week. I think that's a little conservative - probably more like 250k.
November 23, 201113 yr Author Maybe. I'm shocked that Simon Cowell has let this happen, perhaps he got the dates mixed up and assumed that the chart on the 18th will be the xmas chart? The winner usually drops to about 150-200k on week two don't they? Granted it could be a bit higher due to post xmas stocking filler purchases but then physicals are close to being dead anyway now so I doubt it will make that much of a difference. Considering the likes of One Direction and Professor Green have opened with sales north of 150k recently with regular non-charity/event singles, it would be amazing to see a genuine big hit released that week and snatch the xmas #1 spot on merit alone. No X Factor, no engineered campaigns, just a genuine deserving hit song which won't drop away like it has a brick attached to it after xmas. "due to post xmas stocking filler purchases" They will still be PRE-Christmas purchases in the single's second week; that's the point. I'm sure that's what you meant...

You're right it was, my mistake - should proof read my posts more :P Obviously I know that stocking filler purchases aren't being made after xmas!
November 24, 201113 yr I think that's a little conservative - probably more like 250k. It depends on the song and winner, Leon Jackson managed just 120k in his second week - one year later Alexandra Burke sold over 300k in her second. Edited November 24, 201113 yr by simplyobsessed
November 24, 201113 yr Alexandra's second week was majorly helped along by the closing of Woolworths, and her CD being sold for cheap in store, I seem to remember.
December 4, 201113 yr Thinking about this, although the X Factor winner's single will almost certainly be up for download right after the final this time next week, does anybody think that instead of rush pressing the CD single to be in shops for Wednesday that it might be left until Monday December 19th for release? Those held back CD sales could give it the boost it needs to seal an easy second week and the xmas #1, didn't Matt Cardle still shift at least a couple of hundred thousand physicals last year? Amazon have the CD single down for a December 27th release which is nonsense because that's a Tuesday, two and a half weeks after the final and the artist is listed as Janet Devlin
