TBH, if it wasn't for Radio 1, I wouldn't really appreciate some of the type of music lately, and my music taste wouldn't be weird.

Maybe try open up your mind a little bit more, Shelli. :)

Ive tried hun. At college all we listened to was Radio 1 and all that faux indie rock stuff just isn't for me. My brother has all the current indie albums and Ive listened to them and just dont get the appeal. Im more of a rnb gal  Although I do have a soft spot for some of the American rocky pop stuff like Fall Out Boy and Blink 182

If you like them you'd probably like All Time Low, they're not indie in the slightest  If anything they're dumber and poppier than Blink and FOB.

Since when were Biffy a 'minor' band?

I knew calling them "minor" would cause a problem. If you asked most people in the street I doubt they would have heard of Biffy Clyro or if they did it would be because of X Factor. I like some of their music but a lot of their success has been down to the huge support by Radio 1.

I hear The Great Escape by Boys Like Girls on R1 a lot and that only got to #72.

So? That last point is saying JLS are a minor band because a lot of their success has been down to the X Factor. In terms of British bands, (Muse and Take That aside) Biffy are about as big as it gets in terms of those releasing albums in the last couple of years.

They keep playing Mumford & Sons's 'Roll Away Your Stone' and it barely reached the top 200!

The X Factor can do what they like. Its a TV show and can make or break whichever acts on there they want. Radio 1 should be fair in who they playlist and how often they do it.

Biffy arent "as big as it gets", they have had 3 top 10 singles which is good but album sales are at ok but not great, around 300,000?

My point is that Biffy gets far too much support because the people at Radio 1 like them a lot more than most listeners do. They are like a pet band.

And of course the singles and album charts are the only measures of a band's success.

(Also, Only Revolutions has sold over 500k)

I thought this thread was about the Wanted's song at first

I don't mind Radio 1, they playlist some good songs, some are a bit WTF though, hate those remixes they keep playing instead of the original (the version of Higher they play is awful :( ) and they NEED to cut the chat- although they never will :P

and Biffy have had 15 top 40 hits, managing to take all 6 from their current album into the top 40 so clearly they are breaking through to the public and not just radio 1 like them - as far as bands of their genre go these days, they are pretty successful

I haven't listened to radio for about 3 1/2 years now for any length of time, but I've never known Radio 1 DJs to talk any more than they do elsewhere. In my experiences they talk no more than they do on Radio 2, 6 Music, XFM, or any local commercial stations.

As far as I'm concerned Radio 1 are the best mainstream Radio station there is. I don't ever listen to it, I don't like a lot of the music and I don't like the DJs on it, but for the music they play, their playlist is consistantly good-excellent.

Given the three biggest selling 'rock' songs of 2010 were Journey 'Don't Stop Believin' (older than me, and I'm an '80s child), Florence & The Machine 'Dog Days Are OVer' (rock? really?) and Train 'Hey, Soul Sister' I think for any act of that type to have as many as three top 40 singles from one era is a very good acheivement.

why do people here question radio 1 because they are playing a song alot that didnt chart in the top 40??

since when do radio 1 have to play a song based on chart position or sales??thats why i like radio 1 they take risks with alot of the music they playlist in the way that commercial radio (heart/capital/kiss) dont'alot of the biggest hits only get airplay on commercial channels when they go top 10/20 whereas they get there because radio 1 play them or give them a go...if it wasnt for this the charts would be full of pop like rihanan, take that and katy perry all the time - look this week we have a new entry in the top 10 by a drum and bass band - chase n status!! thank you radio 1 for making the charts more interesting!!!

and if you want to hear katy perry and rihanna yes they cater for that too!!

Because a significant of BuzzJack users are very naive and ignorant. If it's not a female pop princess, its shyte as far as they're concerned. The idiot poster above talking about Biffy Clyro is just an example. How exactly are Biffy not a big band? At this present time they probably are the biggest 'rock/indie' act who have released music over the past 2 years. All this bull$h!t about 'indie dominating the playlists etc. etc.' it is so fickle. Do you not think pop acts dominate shows much as X Factor? And when they appear on chatshows etc.? Where's all the rock/indie music there????????

Just because a song isn't a 'hit' doesn't mean that it is not popular. It's probably highly likely that it gets a lot of requests, you know, seeing as these people are the ones who actually listen to Radio 1, and not the ones who decides whether Radio 1 is $h!t by looking at their playlist once a week.

And there was a period of about 20 minutes where some awful DJ was just blabbing about crap. It was so painful :(

My manager has started putting on Heart now though. I dont know which is worse.

I love Heart  Sure it's a bit MOR but you hear some of the current stuff in with the classic hits, I'm sure I heard them play Taio and Kylie the other day.

Then again, I was brought up on Radio 2. I used to love Afternoon Delight, and I didn't realise that It Never Rains In Southern California by Albert Hammond (Strokes bloke's dad) wasn't a hit :o

I can't stand Heart I'm afraid. For such a mainstream radio station to discriminate against certain artists and genres so openly is disgusting imo.

In terms of commercial radio stations, a station like Capital is better than Heart, for the one reason, Capital play pre-dominantly what's in the charts. The reason Capital doesn't play many rock songs is because there aren't many in the chart. If the chart was 90% rock music, Capital would play 90% rock music.

Heart, on the other hand, are just disgusting the way they choose what to play, and their attitude towards music. It's like they have some sort of insane check-list. "Is the no rapping in it? Is there no auto-tune in it? Is there no extensive sampling in it? Does it sound old fashioned? If so, then we might consider playing it if it charts well." I just HATE that mentality. I mean, Radio 1 admitting that they'll never playlist anything Alexandra Burke releases is kind of annoying, and unfair imo (what if she releases a genuinely brilliant and revolutionary song one day?), but Heart FM are on a whole other level. And just how they playlist songs so late aswell, as if they're scared to play a song that doesn't get popular. Like it'll ruin their credibility or something? The least popular song from recent times which I've heard them play are I Like by Keri Hilson and Better Than Today by Kylie Minogue.

The main annoying thing about Heart is how they claim to play "more music variety", when infact, that station probably has the least variety of any station out there. It plays the same songs for years, literally, and infact, it keeps songs on its playlist for OVER 12 MONTHS sometimes. I just don't think that's acceptable. And also how they play all those "classics". Firstly, it's not up to them to determine what a "classic" is. Some of the songs they do play actually, are classics, to be fair, but I hate how they get a mediocre song from a few years ago, and play it, and call it a classic, and say things like "Look how remembered this song is!". It's kind of like, "Well, it wouldn't be remembered if you weren't STILL playing it every single day". And also how it's not even variety from the past years. It's like they have 3 different songs from each of the past 30 years, and then play them, and call it variety. Seriously, there must be other good music from back then? And also, judging by the songs they still play from 2008 and 2009, the songs they're still playing from 1986 probably weren't even close to the best from their year either.

I agree with Eric, Heart is awful! They've JUST began playing Only Girl, and introduced it as 'Rihanna's new song'. Uhh, newsflash, she's kinda had 2 singles (WMN and S&M) since then! Well, S&M hasn't been released, but it's her next single so she's had 2 singles on radio since the period when it actually was her new song!

^I agree with you both

I'd rename Heart and Capital to Stale FM personally, they just play the same songs over and over and its purely songs which have done well and are radio friendly, and sometimes a random song that sometimes hasn't even aged well

Music variety is what I'd call a mixture of pop, indie, alternative, Rock, punk, metal, dance, R'n'B, hip hop, soul and retro (yes I copied that from the site forums but its true! :P ) Heart doesn't come anywhere close to this, and as said, their definition of classic is just purely radio-friendly songs some of which aren't very well-remembered - Muse have done many a classic, but I doubt Heart have ever even mentioned their name, I think Radio 1 do get this right in their defence, there is a very good mixture of genres and some older stuff too (although not usually pre-2000), its just the amount of talking that annoys me, heart and Capital in their defence, do at least get on with the music and less chat

Looks like I'm not alone with my dislike (and the reasons) on Heart's music then. But isn't this thread is about Radio 1's obsession with some bands? :heehee:
