Yeah, I've downloaded it and will watch next week as I'm away from home at the moment.

Haven't forgotten

I have forgotten :( Extremely lacking of time that I spend on watching films :(
Would it be okay to jump in Chris? I could get a copy by next week if I don't download it before hand. A film club is a fantastic idea by the way.

I just watched it.

To be honest I didnt think it was anything special, the only thing particulary special about the film was Huffman's brilliant and very convincing performance, I thought Kevin Zegers who played Toby was fairly good aswell but was overshadowed by Huffman. Filmmaking wise there wasnt really much interesting going on (in contrast to last months pick Ameile), I felt there were many plot points that should have had much more emotional impact than they did, I found myself not caring at certain points when I should have been, I guess that goes down to some bad pacing and maybe bad writing. Sadly I didnt think it was that much of an interesting representation of a Transexual, something I think is never addressed in film, there is clearly room for filmmakers to push the boundries with the representation of transexuals, i'm not sure I can even name another film that even features a transexual, I think this film may have possibly missed the chance to really say something about transexualism. The story of the film is good but I just feel that it maybe wasnt padded out enough to make it an interesting film that lacks any emotional impact where as really it should, however Huffman's performance is extremely well done and is what in my opinion makes the film.

yes. also same price on amazon.

Just finished watching this so here goes.

The film is pretty decent but as Road Movies go it falls into the usual cliched traps. We have a typical odd couple thrown together through a twist of fate and despite their polar opposite natures the follow the usual metaphorical journey across country on a voyage of mutual and ultimately self discovery and in the end a beautiful friendship is born. The two leads of Huffman and Zegers are both strong in their roles and well cast. Huffman edges it in her portrayal of Bree but the supporting cast is competent yet largely incidental with no memorable characters. The film's biggest criticism is its lack of depth and I concur with this. It has the set up in place to discuss the complex situation of transgender yet consistently pulls back just when things could get interesting and ultimately fails to tackle the subject at all. It tries to present itself as lighthearted yet is neither amusing nor quirky and defiantly lacks any real depth or subtext. This sadly leaves the film with nothing much to say and can only be regarded as a missed opportunity to create a truly interesting piece of cinema.

The film's other strong point besides the two leads is the use of incidental music which is richly yet subtly evocative of the parts of America relevant to the scenes in which the tracks are used. There's also some good cinematography occasionally but for all America's beautiful scenery this option is used perhaps too sparingly or just another oversight. The director seems to have concentrated on the lead characters at the expense of all else but ultimately flinched when it mattered perhaps for fear of being too controversial for the American mainstream audience at which the film is clearly targeted. Finally there's a nice homage to the grandaddy of Road Movies Midnight Cowboy with the now blonde Toby sporting a black stetson in the films finale.

Ultimately this film is saved by its two lead actors without whom this would have garnered little recognition and could be filed neatly away as just another run of the mill Road Movie. Disappointing and underwhelming sadly.

My review shall be in on Sunday as I'm off, and that fits Saturday night when nothing's on very nicely!
Ooops haven't had time to fit this in yet, Hopefully watch it tomorrow or Sat

Got round to giving this a go. Was not that impressed with it. As ever, Felicity Huffman was amazing and it was her presence that made this movie for me.

The plot itself was okay but as others have said, there was some very predictable bits to it.

So I finally got round to watching this, and Severin's first two sentences of his review sum up what let this down for me. I was also probably hoping for / wanting more of a docufiction. I watched it 10 days ago, and it had so little effect on me, I can't make this review more than two lines long. It wasn't awful, though, just a little boring.
