What is the least amount of copies seperating a number one and two?

0 copies seperated Steve Miller Band - The Joker and Dee-Lite - Groove Is In The Heart - either 15/9/90 or 22/9/90 (Steve Miller Band got to number one because it increased the most from previous week)

16 copies seperated Timbaland and Keri Hilson - Way I Are and Kate Nash - Foundations - 4/8/07

67 copies seperated Kanye West - Stronger and Robyn - With Every Heartbeat - 25/8/07

131 copies seperated Rihanna - Umbrella and Kate Nash - Foundations - 28/7/07

392 copies seperated 2Pac - Ghetto Gospel and Mariah Carey - We Belong Together - 16/7/05

<500 copies seperated Sugababes - Freak Like Me and S Club 8 (Juniors) - One Step Closer - 4/5/02

Least amount of copies seperating other positions:

Between 4 and 5 - 0 copies seperated Mylo Vs Miami Sound Machine - Doctor Pressure and Daniel Powter - Bad Day - 24/9/05

Between 2 and 3 - 1 copy seperated Michael Jackson - Man In The Mirror and La Roux - Bulletproof - 11/7/09

Between 3 and 4 - 6 copies seperated The 411 - Dumb and Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved - 4/9/04

Between 3 and 4 - 7 copies seperated Pussycat Dolls - When I Grow Up and McFly - Lies - 27/9/08

Between 4 and 5 - 23 copies seperated Eminem - We Made You and Dan Merriweather - Red - 30/5/09

Between 7 and 8 - 157 copies seperated Jessie J - Do It Like a Dude and Taio/Kylie/Travie - Higher - 12/2/11

24 copies seperated Fireflies and Under Pressure in the Tuesday mid-weeks, I believe, but the gap widened by the end of the week. Last time I checked, it said on wikipedia that that was the sales difference over the whole week, but that's incorrect, and I keep forgetting to ask them to change it.

The closest in recent time was when Keri Hilson beat Kate Nash to #1 a few years ago, I think.

I think there have been some that have actually tied in sales before though.

thankyou eric blob, but what does the chart do if two songs sell the same amount in a week?

Keri Hilson?!

I'm sure you mean Rihanna with 'Umbrella'?

In the whole of chart history, the record is zero. In the early days of the charts there were a few joint number ones. However, at the time, sales figures were taken from very few shops so it's not surprising that there was the occasional tie. In later years there have been occasions where there would have been a joint number one without the introduction of tie-breaking rules.

I thought it was Timbaland and Keri Hilson with The Way I Are? I might be wrong though.

no, it was timbaland and keri - just 16 copies! :w00t:

Wasnt it very very close between steve miller band im a joker and deee lite and grove is in the heart back in 1990? And wasnt there something with enigam in 1991 going number 1 i think there was a mis count or something and seal should have been the number 1??

Steve Miller Band's 'The Joker' and Dee-Lite's 'Groove Is In The Heart' sold *exactly* the same amount of copies in 1990. The Joker was given the official number 1 as it increased the most from the previous week. They later claimed that The Joker had sold a couple more copies after all, but that was probably a lie to stop the controversy :P

They changed the rules after that so records could tie, but I don't think it's ever happened since! Closest since is surely Timbaland/Kate Nash in 2007 as stated earlier, 16 copies.

Other close ones - Mariah Carey missed out by 392 copies with 'We Belong Together' in 2005 (beaten by 2Pac's 'Ghetto Gospel'), and poor Robyn was beaten by 67 copies in 2007 by Kanye West!

Since 2007, that's correct.

Also (covering the same period) ...

Between 2 & 3 : 11/7/09 1 copy - Michael Jackson 'Man In The Mirror', La Roux 'Bulletproof'

Between 3 & 4 : 27/9/08 7 copies - Pussycat Dolls 'When I Grow Up, McFly 'Lies'

Between 4 & 5 : 30/5/09 23 copies - Eminem 'We Made You', Dan Merriweather 'Red'

I don't think it was a lie it was something to do with rounding up or down so it sold 8 more copies in the sample but the extrapolation formula made them tie. However since they didn't track every sale back in 1990 we'll never know which single actually sold more copies.

Was that the week when they change the market research compiler, there wasn't a controversy as such.

Less than 500 copies seperated Sugababes 'Freak Like Me' and S Club Juniors 'One Step Closer' when the tracks entered at #1 and #2 respctively in the UK chart w/e 28th April 2002.

I remember a track from Sophie Lawrence "Love's Unkind" she had a joint record with a band or artist at #21 or around that mark in 1991, unless I dreamt it. Mind you at the time it was a common thing, other artists used to peak joint, and it faded away quickly.

I think 808 State 'One In Ten' held a joint position at some point in it's chart run also, I really have no idea what with though.
