I just can't at all these people saying Gaga is flopping because Madonna was #1 in more countries with Hung Up... Hung Up didn't go to #1 in all those countries in the first two weeks of release!! Give it time people!! It will be front-loaded, then stabilise, then hopefully increase with the video.

Remember the Telephone scenario - top 15 -> #1!!

Unfortunately, I think you are just wasting your time! Most people love (would love) to see GaGa flop or underperforming (not so much in this forum but in general)! Time will tell!

I'm not making any crazy assumptions yet. I predicted Gaga would return with a UK #1 and, to be honest, if it was released on a Sunday, it would have been. But I'm fine that it didn't make #1, because, ultimately, it was #1 in America, which is what really counts. The video will obviously boost it, everything just depends on how big of a boost that is, but I'm satisfied with the success it has had in 2 weeks worldwide.

Can we just leave it at this: Born This Way is CLEARLY not a flop. End?

Now back to iTunes..

That's what i've been saying again and again but nobody seems to understand! Totally agree!

BTW is not flopping :S it's not performing as well as some expected but it's sold a solid amount of the back of hype and had 2 weeks as the US #1 without a video. If this is a flop i dread to think what you consider Britneys last effort was

To be honest, what's happening here is that some of the Lady Gaga haters are essentially building a strawman, claiming the Lady Gaga stans built it (although they did, to an extent) and then demolishing it themselves.

I've had this done to me in discussions before. I'm not a fan of Lady Gaga, but using logical fallacies like that doesn't help when trying to have a discussion.

That's precisely what I think.

Exactly. It's like me asking you "Do you still attack small children?". Then forcing you to reply either "Yes" or "No". Whatever you reply, you're admitting to attacking small children, when you probably don't.

I'm sure some Lady Gaga fans are pleased with how she's done, yet there's some people going around telling them that they're upset at how "badly" she's done. Perhaps some of them are upset about it, but I doubt these anti-Gaga people are capable of mind-reading.

Erm no. It started with me and other people saying the song is underperforming in the UK at the mo (and not FLOPPING), then the lot of you came and said OH NO SHE'S NOT FLOPPING OMG OMG §§§§§§

It's like we can't express any kind of criticism toward GaGa. And it wasn't even criticism, it was about how we analyse her performance on Itunes so far.

And your analysis made no sense because it was based on what you apparently think people expected from BTW.

If you want a GaGa single that 'under-performed', look at LoveGame. Calling Born This Way under-performing after how many records it broke without even having a video and premiering 2 hours before its release it completely ridiculous.

I like people who are diplomatic :)

In brief conclusion - am I happy with Gaga's performance worldwide?? Yes. Apparently her world total this week is the highest ever since world tracking began in that format in 1999. Am I happy with Gaga's performance in the UK?? Yes and no. I'm glad her sales for a week would warrant #1, but I'm disappointed she's falling. I hope the video helps.

I would have accepted this, but there were those who were saying it was underperforming worldwide because it wasn't #1 in most countries anymore, which is a bit ridiculous.

That's the point. For example:

1. Claim someone has built a strawman - You tell someone that they were expecting a song to sell 200,000 in its first week (this is just an example, nobody has said this).

2. Then demolish it - Wow, the song only sold 100,000 in its first week. You must be really disappointed! What a disaster!

It's a similar thing that's been happening on like the past 5 pages of this thread.

If you want to discuss 'Born This Way', can you PLEASE go to the topic in Lady GaGa Forum, even I'm getting pretty bored of reading pages about whether it's a flop or not.
I don't get what you mean by 'strawman'?

It's just a figure of speech representing expectations.

I quote myself from a couple of pages ago:

There's a difference between a song flopping and a song doing less well than excpected. I could 'expect', say, The Wanted's Comic Relief single to open with 500,000 sales. Then if it opened up with 150,000 sales it wouldn't come close to my expectations but it still doesn't come close to being a flop.

Sabrina was saying essentially the same thing.

The term strawman covers quite a lot in discussions. I think people unintentially use them a lot of the time. However, if you ever watch a debate between politicians, various varieties of strawman arguements crop up left, right and centre, and the politicians are clearly using them deliberately.
