To change the subject completely, what the heck is a Stan? I've heard it used to describe an obsession for a particular musical act, but where does it originate?!

It originates from the song Stan. Stan was a fictional character created by Eminem, who was so obssessed with him that he ended up killing his pregnant girlfriend and committing suicide. So if you're a stan of someone, it means you're a massive fan of them, idolize them, etc. Hopefully not to the same extent that Stan did though! :o

I'm almost certain it originated from Eminem's song anyway. I guess Eminem chose the name "Stan" because it rhymes with "fan", which makes the song considerably easier to write for him. :lol:

 

I googled it, just to make sure. It seems other rappers started using the word "stan" to describe an obsessed fan in their songs shortly after Eminem's song, and then after a while, the public started doing it too.

 

I hope it makes the dictionary one day. :lol:

You too tbh. Being someone who likes both Adele and Cheryl (I'm using them as examples, because they're basically the most liked and most hated UK artists at the moment), it's so easy to like Adele, but it takes a lot of courage to be a Cheryl fan, so I always admire the people that openly stan them. I know from first-hand experience that a simple statement like "I like Cheryl" can have you met with ridicule, and I've seen certain members be mocked for it on this site.

 

But yeah, this is like the most depressing conversation ever. :lol:

 

It's going to be interesting to see what sort of boost Adele gets. Her perfomances apparently make quite an impact on people, so I've heard! :lol:

I don't consider myself a stan of anyone (if anything, I'm a Barça stan, if there can be stans in football :P), I don't have any problem criticizing everything Cheryl does wrong, because it's quite a lot (musically, I'm no one to judge her personal life)

Most people seem to dislike Cheryl because she was called "Nation's Sweetheart" for a while. I don't think she's been dubbed as Nation's Sweetheart in Spain.

 

Although this does demonstrate the point I've been making actually. In countries where Cheryl hasn't been hyped up like she has in the UK, she's generally very liked.
