I was looking at some old threads I'd made and saw one regarding when the top 40 contains 40 different lead artists, so decided to see when was the last time it happened.

 

On Week ending 10/5/2008 'Warwick Avenue' entered the top 40 to give Duffy two entries. Since then there has only been ONE week where the top 40 has contained 40 different acts, week ending 13/6/2009, where Lady GaGa was at #12, #41 and #43, incredibly close to going almost three years.

 

Below are artists that have had two entries in the top 40 since May 2008. I know there are far more occurances and that some of these will have more than one entry, this is just to show that at least one artist has two top 40 hits between the two dates.

I realise this is going off lead artists only, but just pointing out Ciara had 2 entries that week - her own LSM and Enrique's TBML

thats goes to show how much cherry picking and early hype have become so commonplace now, plus artists tend to release quite early due to fake versions

But this is based on lead artists only so that doesn't explain it :P

I think it might be due to downloads, to an extent though. Some songs hang around for ages in the chart now, way after their release date, and likewize, post-album songs can chart really early too, sometimes months before their release date. It makes sense that a lot of artists will get their singles overlapping in the chart tbh.

And that is the main, if not only, reason for the big overlaps.

*sigh* I remember the good feeling when an artist having two tracks top 40 was a novelty. These days acts get 3 songs just in the top 10 and I really don't like that.

That's only happened with one artist the entire century (I think only 6 or so artists have ever done it) and one of the three songs involved was a featured credit...

I can only think of Rihanna who did that. :lol: Her getting 3 songs in the top 10 was an incredible achievement, and DEFINITELY not a regular occurance! :lol:

The week before Duffy had both 'Warwick Avenue' and 'Mercy' in the top 40 at the same time Kanye West was in with Flashing Lights and also featured on American Boy...

So, four 1/4 years with only two times the top 40 had 40 different lead acts, and both times there was an act who had a lead and a featured.... I'll probably do 2006 later on or tomorrow.

It used to happen back in the past too, it's just that an artist having 3 songs in the top 10 is rarer these days. I think Rihanna is the only person to have done it in my lifetime. The last person to do it before Rihanna was John Lennon, apparently?
