Posted March 30, 201114 yr I was looking at some old threads I'd made and saw one regarding when the top 40 contains 40 different lead artists, so decided to see when was the last time it happened. On Week ending 10/5/2008 'Warwick Avenue' entered the top 40 to give Duffy two entries. Since then there has only been ONE week where the top 40 has contained 40 different acts, week ending 13/6/2009, where Lady GaGa was at #12, #41 and #43, incredibly close to going almost three years. Below are artists that have had two entries in the top 40 since May 2008. I know there are far more occurances and that some of these will have more than one entry, this is just to show that at least one artist has two top 40 hits between the two dates. 10/05/2008 Duffy 'Warwick Avenue' / 'Mercy' 09/08/2008 Rihanna 'Take a Bow' / 'Disturbia' 20/09/2008 Basshunter 'Angel in the Night' / 'All I Ever Wanted' 27/09/2008 Chris Brown 'Forever' / 'Kiss Kiss' 04/10/2008 Kings of Leon 'Sex on Fire' / 'Use Somebody' 25/10/2008 Katy Perry 'I Kissed a Girl' / 'Hot N Cold' 20/12/2008 Kings of Leon 'Sex on Fire' / 'Use Somebody' 23/05/2009 Lady GaGa 'Poker Face' / 'Just Dance 13/06/2009 NONE 20/06/2009 Lady GaGa 'Poker Face' / 'Paparazzi' 05/09/2009 Lady GaGa 'Paparazzi' / 'LoveGame' 10/10/2009 Jay-Z 'Run This Town' / 'Empire State of Mind' 14/11/2009 Black Eyed Peas 'Meet Me Halfway' / 'I Gotta Feeling' 06/03/2010 Lady GaGa 'Bad Romance' / 'Telephone' 15/05/2010 Rihanna 'Rude Boy' / 'Te Amo' 05/06/2010 Lady GaGa 'Telephone' / 'Alejandro' 10/07/2010 Tinie Tempah 'Frisky' / 'Pass Out' 24/07/2010 Eminem 'Love the Way You Lie' / 'Not Afraid' 11/09/2010 Katy Perry 'Teenage Dream' / 'Califonia Gurls' 23/10/2010 B.o.B 'Airplanes' / 'Magic' 06/11/2010 Eminem 'Love The Way You Lie' / 'No Love' 04/12/2010 Rihanna 'Only Girl' / 'What's My Name' 26/03/2011 Adele 'Someone Like You' / 'Rolling in the Deep'
March 30, 201114 yr Thanks for that Mark. I was going to raise the question when it looked like happening but that doesn't seem likely any time soon
March 30, 201114 yr I'm surprised there's even been one week since downloads took off. :o I realise this is going off lead artists only, but just pointing out Ciara had 2 entries that week - her own LSM and Enrique's TBML (Spoilered for roaming Jacks) Edited March 30, 201114 yr by Bray
March 30, 201114 yr thats goes to show how much cherry picking and early hype have become so commonplace now, plus artists tend to release quite early due to fake versions
March 30, 201114 yr ISTM downloads are a red herring - the real reason is the proliferation of collaborations...
March 30, 201114 yr ISTM downloads are a red herring - the real reason is the proliferation of collaborations... But this is based on lead artists only so that doesn't explain it :P
March 30, 201114 yr I think it might be due to downloads, to an extent though. Some songs hang around for ages in the chart now, way after their release date, and likewize, post-album songs can chart really early too, sometimes months before their release date. It makes sense that a lot of artists will get their singles overlapping in the chart tbh.

March 30, 201114 yr *sigh* I remember the good feeling when an artist having two tracks top 40 was a novelty. These days acts get 3 songs just in the top 10 and I really don't like that.

That's only happened with one artist the entire century (I think only 6 or so artists have ever done it) and one of the three songs involved was a featured credit... I can only think of Rihanna who did that. Her getting 3 songs in the top 10 was an incredible achievement, and DEFINITELY not a regular occurance! Edited March 30, 201114 yr by Eric_Blob
March 31, 201114 yr Author I'm surprised there's even been one week since downloads took off. :o I realise this is going off lead artists only, but just pointing out Ciara had 2 entries that week - her own LSM and Enrique's TBML (Spoilered for roaming Jacks) Hmm, I might see how far I can go back if you include featured artists... The week before Duffy had both 'Warwick Avenue' and 'Mercy' in the top 40 at the same time Kanye West was in with Flashing Lights and also featured on American Boy... From the beginning of 2008: 05/01/2008 Rihanna 'Umbrella' / 'Don't Stop the Music' 16/02/2008 Adele 'Chasing Pavements' / Hometown Glory' 23/02/2008 Timbaland 'Apologize' / 'Scream' 26/04/2008 Britney Spears 'Break the Ice' / 'Piece of Me' 03/05/2008 Kanye West 'Flashing Lights' / 'American Boy'* 10/05/2008 Duffy 'Mercy' / 'Warwick Avenue' Infact, going back to the beginning of 2007... 06/01/2007 Girls Aloud 'I Think We're Alone Now' / 'Something Kinda Oooh' 20/01/2007 Amy Winehouse 'You Know I'm No Good' / 'Rehab' 17/02/2007 Take That 'Shine' / 'Patience' 28/04/2007 Mika 'Love Today' / 'Grace Kelly' 23/06/2007 The Fray 'Over My Head' / 'How To Save a Life' 14/07/2007 Fergie 'Big Girls Don't Cry' / 'Glamorous' 28/07/2007 Timbaland 'The Way I Are' / 'Give It To Me' 01/09/2007 Rihanna 'Umbrella' / 'Shut Up and Drive' 10/11/2007 Rihanna 'Hate That I Love You' / 'Umbrella' 01/12/2007 Kanye West 'Good Life' / 'Stronger' 08/12/2007 Sugababes 'Change' / 'About You Now' So, four 1/4 years with only two times the top 40 had 40 different lead acts, and both times there was an act who had a lead and a featured.... I'll probably do 2006 later on or tomorrow.
March 31, 201114 yr That's only happened with one artist the entire century (I think only 6 or so artists have ever done it) and one of the three songs involved was a featured credit... The fact that it happened once and in those circumstances this century is too much for me.
March 31, 201114 yr The fact that it happened once and in those circumstances this century is too much for me. But its not exactly the first time it's happened...
March 31, 201114 yr The fact that it happened once and in those circumstances this century is too much for me. It used to happen back in the past too, it's just that an artist having 3 songs in the top 10 is rarer these days. I think Rihanna is the only person to have done it in my lifetime. The last person to do it before Rihanna was John Lennon, apparently?
