Who holds the record for having a song that is number one in most countries? Good old wikipedia says Madonna - Hung Up was number one in 45 different countries and earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records, but is there anything that tops this? :)

Shakira - Hips Don't Lie - 55+ countries

Hips Don't Lie by Shakira? That surely would've been #1 in nearly every country on the entire planet.

Number one in over 55 countries :D

Elton John - Candle in the Wind?

I can't find anything on wikipedia, but if Madonna's Hung Up was once the record holder, Candle in the Wind must have been number one in less countries

Geraldine McQueen was number one in 76 countries :D

And sold more then The Beatles...In Kenya .

Yeah because you can believe EVERYTHING that Wikipedia says.....

Sorry, but Wikipedia quoted that Madonna statistic from the Guiness Book of Records, I believe.

I know the Guiness Book of Records isn't always 100% correct, but it usually is (same goes for Wikipedia, and literally every "mainstream" book/website ).

My point is that anyone can edit Wikipedia and put whatever they like! Is that Madonna statistic in the Guiness Book of Records or was it "quoted" as being the source on Wikipedia???

No they can't. Anything added to Wikipedia needs to be sourced. You're only likely to find incorrect information on really insignificant pages like '1979 in Mexican sport' or something.

I think it's in the 2007 Guiness Book of Records.

On wikipedia, if you click on the "discussion" tab, it takes you to a page where if you spot any errors in the article, you can ask for it to be deleted, or you can ask where they got the sources of certain bits of information from or where you can suggest things to be included in the article, and so on.

And at the bottom of the article there's a list of all the sources used to contribute to the article. For example, Hung Up's article is taken from 97 different sources, apparently. Sources that are online, are citated, so they can link you to the actual website.

If you add a random sentence to an article, after a period of time, especially if it's an important article (such as a Madonna article), you'll get asked to provide a citation for the sentance that you added. If you don't, you'll find a little note will appear by the side of it saying "citation needed" so people reading will know that there's been no source given for that part, or your contribution will be deleted altogether.

Try it for yourself. :) But don't do it too much, or else your IP gets banned from editing future wikipedia articles.

The biggest problem with wikipedia articles, especially the music ones, is simply them not being updated enough. This is just an example, but they might say on When We Collide's article that it's the best-selling song of the decade in the UK so far, which is true, but when Just the Way You Are or Someone Like You overtakes it, they might forget to delete that bit out of When We Collide's article. I use wikipedia a lot, and that's definitely the most common source or error on there.

EDIT: Bray said it better than me. If you don't source your edits they get deleted, or that "citation needed" note appears, and if it's a really bad edit, they call it "vandalism", and your user account and/or IP gets a "black mark", so to speak, which leads to you getting blocked, if you persist.

I got banned from editing Wikipedia once  But it obviously wasn't an IP ban as I can edit it now

In October 1997, Candle in the Wind had already reportedly been #1 in 21 countries. It may have got to number one in more in the weeks after that, but it seems unlikely (read: impossible) it would have got to #1 in a whole 35 more countries to top Shakira.

LONDON--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Oct. 2, 1997--PolyGram Thursday announced that Elton John's single ``Something About The Way You Look Tonight''/``Candle In The Wind 1997'' has shipped more than 26 million units worldwide, making it the second most successful single ever after Bing Crosby's ``White Christmas'' which has sold more than 30 million copies (see Note A).

The record for second biggest selling single was previously held by Bill Haley and his Comets' ``Rock Around The Clock'' which has sold 25 million units (see Note A).

``Something About The Way You Look Tonight''/``Candle In The Wind 1997'' has been released in more than 40 countries, reaching number one in 21 of those so far, and it has broken a string of records all over the world.

- In the United States, the Rocket Records/A&M Associated

Labels single entered this week's Billboard Hot 100 chart at number one. The single is the fastest selling ever in the United States and the RIAA certified the record 8 times platinum in the first 24 hours it was on sale.

- It is the world's biggest selling single ever by a British artist.

- Shipments in the United Kingdom now exceed five million, the largest amount ever for a single there and the record is still at number one.

- Next week the single will enter the Japanese combined international and domestic music chart at number one. This will be only the second time in the chart's history that an international artist has entered at number one. The last time was in 1976.

- In Germany shipments have passed four million and the record is still at number one.

- In France more than two million units have been shipped and the record is still number one.

- More than 1.8 million units have been shipped in Canada and the record is still at number one.

- In South Africa the single has been certified platinum an incredible 12 times.

- The record is the biggest selling single ever in Austria and Belgium and in Norway where it has been certified platinum seven times.

- The single is the first ever to be certified gold in Israel. All Elton John artist royalties and PolyGram profits are being donated to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund.

Do royalties for (download) sales of SATWYLT / CITW'97 still get donated to the Diana memorial fund? What does the Diana memorial fund even do?

I think the same question about the various Band Aids - do proceeds from those via downloads still go towards Ethiopian famine charities?

Our school got an IP ban from it. Let's just say, it caused a little bit of drama.

I'm sure Band Aid sales still all go to famine relief.

Elton John announced a few years ago that he was donating all future royalties to Aids charities so even if the Diana memorial fund doesn't exist any more, royalties will still go to charity.

Spice Girls' 'Wannabe' is the biggest by a female group and hit #1 in 35 countrys

and by March 1997 this number had climbed to thirty-five. It has become the best-selling single by a female group, selling over six million copies worldwide
