Posted April 23, 201114 yr Currently I don't have an up-to-date book about the UK singles chart so I ask for a little guidance here if you don't mind.. Which acts have had a quite remarkable gap between Top 40 hits? Couple that came to my mind are Eddy Grant (13 years) and The Beatles (14 years between Real Love and Hey Jude). Somebody's probably keeping up some data about this so let's discuss...
April 23, 201114 yr If you're going to count the re-entry of Hey Jude, Gerry And The Pacemakers had a 44 and a half year gap between 'Walk Hand In Hand' in November/December 1965 and the re-entry of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' in April/May 2010.
April 23, 201114 yr Cher had no top 40 hits between 1966 and 1971, and then between 1974 and 1981. It's not that long, but she seemed to have a few lengthy gaps in her career.
April 23, 201114 yr Author Cher had no top 40 hits between 1966 and 1971, and then between 1974 and 1981. It's not that long, but she seemed to have a few lengthy gaps in her career. Yea seven years is not that long. 'Believe' was so huge that it was considered as third coming especially in the US but she really wasn't away that long - in fact she's been away longer now (her latest hit was in 2002).
April 23, 201114 yr Why would you count re-entries? Surely that would be a long gap between top 40 appearances not top 40 singles... John Otway springs to mind, as I was actually just thinking about that just today. Reached top 10 in 2002 after he asked his fanbase to get him another hit for his birthday, and got to appear on Top of the Pops. eWOzQE9Isek Last top 40 hit before than was in 1977. I doubt he's the longest but he sure must be one of the longest to do it off his own back (i.e. without advertising, etc)...
April 23, 201114 yr Why would you count re-entries? Surely that would be a long gap between top 40 appearances not top 40 singles... If this was directed at me I don't agree with that either, I just posted about GATP because SKOB mentioned The Beatles who did it with a re-entry rather than a new single :P Real example: Tony Christie had a 23 year gap between Drive Safely Darlin' in 1976 and Walk Like A Panther in 1999 (All Seeing I feat. Tony Christie) Edited April 23, 201114 yr by Bray
April 23, 201114 yr Author If this was directed at me I don't agree with that either, I just posted about GATP because SKOB mentioned The Beatles who did it with a re-entry rather than a new single :P I was going to say Tony Christie 29 years between 'Drive Safely Darlin'' in 1976 and '(Is This The Way To) Amarillo' in 2005 (30 years to '(Is This The Way To) The World Cup' if you consider Amarillo a re-entry) but he featured on 'Walk Like A Panther' by All Seeing I which charted at #10 in 1999. Still, 23 years bteween DSD and WLAP is a pretty long time as well. About the Beatles: Let It Be last december was a new entry though
April 23, 201114 yr About the Beatles: Let It Be last december was a new entry though No it wasn't, it got to #2 in 1970.
April 23, 201114 yr Author No it wasn't, it got to #2 in 1970. lol yea I was thinking of Here Comes the Sun which made Top 75 last year. Nevermind.
April 23, 201114 yr Sandie Shaw - 15 Years 1969 - Monsieur Dupont #6 1984 - Hand In Glove #27 Katrina & The Waves - 11 Years 1986 - Sun Street #22 1997 - Love Shine A Light #3 Take That - 10 Years 1996 - How Deep Is Your Love #1 2006 - Patience #1 The Dave Clark Five - 23 Years 1970 - More Good Old Rock 'N' Roll #34 1993 - Glad All Over [1993] #37 Perez 'Prez' Prado - 37 Years 1958 - Patrica #8 1995 - Guaglione #2 New Kids On The Block - 14 Years 1994 - Dirty Dwag #27 2008 - Summertime #34
April 23, 201114 yr technically, the original five piece Take That took 14 years to have a top 40 hit- Never Forget in 1996, then The Flood in 2010- although thats pushing it a bit  Train comes to mind- Drops of Jupiter charted in 2001, then Hey Soul Sister became another hit in 2010
April 23, 201114 yr Shakin' Stevens. "Radio" reached no 37 in October 1992 and he returned in June 2005 with a cover of Pink's "Trouble" which made no 20. Technically it was a double A side with "This Ole House" but "Trouble" was the track which was promoted.
April 23, 201114 yr Gary Barlow - 11 Years 1999 - For All That You Want #24 2010 - Shame [With Robbie Williams] #2 Shakin' Stevens - 14 Years 1991 - I'll Be Home This Christmas #34 2005 - Trouble/This Ole House #20 Clubhouse - 11 Years 1983 - Do It Again/Billie Jean [Medley] #11 1994 - Light My Fire [Featuring Carl] #7 Robyn - 9 Years 1998 - Do You Really Want Me? #20 2007 - With Every Heartbeat #1
April 23, 201114 yr If this was directed at me I don't agree with that either, I just posted about GATP because SKOB mentioned The Beatles who did it with a re-entry rather than a new single :P It wasn't directed at anyone :P Just a general point that I don't think re-entries should really count. Andy Williams (24 years): You Lay So Easy On My Mind (1975) => Music To Watch Girls Go By (1999) Although if you completely ignore any song that charted before (regardless of whether it was a re-issue or not), than the gap extends to 27 years when he reached #23 on a new version of Can't Take My Eyes Off You with Denise Van Outen in 2002. April 23, 201114 yr Agnetha Faltskog - 21 Years 1983 The Heat Is On #35 2004 If I Thought You'd Ever Change Your Mind #11 Leo Sayer - 15 Years 1983 Orchard Road #16 1998 You Make Me Feel Like Dancing [Groove Generation Featuring Leo Sayer] #32 Donny Osmond - 16 Years 1988 Soldier Of Love #29 2004 Breeze On By #8 Carl Douglas - 21 Years 1977 Run Back #25 1998 Kung Fu Fighting [bus Stop Featuring Carl Douglas] #8 John Travolta - 12 Years 1978 Greased Lightning #11 1990 The Grease Megamix [With Olivia Newton John] #3 Tony Christie - 23 Years 1976 Drive Safely Darlin' #35 1999 Walk Like A Panther [All Seeing I Featuring Tony Christie] #10 Boyzone - 9 Years 1999 Everyday I Love You #3 2008 I Love You Anyway #5 Vanilla Ice - 19 Years 1991 Satisfaction #22 2010 Under Pressure [ice Ice Baby] [Jedward Featuring Vanilla Ice] #2
April 24, 201114 yr Tony Christie - 23 Years 1976 Drive Safely Darlin' #35 1999 Walk Like A Panther [All Seeing I Featuring Tony Christie] #10 Hey, I already said that one.
April 24, 201114 yr Author Thank you guys! There seem to be loads of gaps of over 15 years. Also must mention Guns N' Roses: 13 years (Sympathy for the Devil - Chinese Democracy) Edited April 24, 201114 yr by SKOB
April 24, 201114 yr Two more: Chris Rea - 14 Years 1993 - Julia #18 2007 - Driving Home For Christmas #33 DHFC only got to #61 on its original 1988 run so can be counted as a new top 40 hit for him. Chris De Burgh - 13 Years 1997 - So Beautiful #29 2010 - Lonely Sky #36 (Ben Hazelby and Jamie Hazelby feat. Chris De Burgh) LS entered on W/E 01/01/2011 but I've counted it as a 2010 hit because that week is part of 2010.
