The hosts always used to do it like this until people started complaining that it was too fabricated and that the obvious twists were undermining the reality of the votes, or whatever...

 

But I prefer it being more exciting too. In contests where a song soars ahead (Silly Boy, Hollywood, The Last Time) it's much harder to 'manipulate' though.
