It's not surprising state pension age will increase, it'd have to be done sooner or later given life expectancy increases. The way it's been announced isn't good though.

The government should have started putting the retirement age up 30 years ago but lacked the courage to do so. The result of that cowardice is that subsequent governments (both Labour and Tory-led) have had to change plans several times. I am a little over nine years from my current retirement date but I'm still not confident that it won't have changed again by the time I get there.

Hm, I expect life expectancy may actually have peaked and we may see a slight fall in the coming decades due to huge (and growing) levels of obesity.

Could be a temporary blip as a lot of the baby boomers are now entering old age (I believe the highest smoking rates were during their time)? Life expectancy is still expected to increase, but at a slower pace as it has done. Not really a terrible thing as I'd be very happy to live to my mid-late 70s and it'll mean the population's aging will slow to a certain extent.

Knowing the Tories, they'll probably raise it to 85...
