I'm so pleased for her. I've been championing her for the Top 10 since she first released it and was so disappointed for that brief period where it looked like she wouldn't do it. #1 is just AMAZING.

Very well done, she'd already made up for not getting to no.1 over here when "Someone Like You" went and did it but this is a stunning achievement - a British singer-songwriter (who's not exactly overly glamorous either) to go to no.1 on both sides of the Atlantic with two different songs from the same album is incredible.

I do think the US charts are too static - the positions that Glee get to on their digital charts, if they had the same system as ours on the Hot 100 they'd have had several top 10s and maybe even a few no.1s - probably deserved given the popularity of the show.

Yeah the UK chart is definitely still better, better variety and is more accommodating to new acts and genres. Although I will point out that if you replaced dance with country, the UK chart would probably look pretty similar to the Hot 100.

Lately, both charts are sorely lacking rock and R&B acts...

Yeah, but why would anyone want to do that? :kink:

But seriously, I agree that the two charts are pretty similar these days. Certainly far more than I ever remember them being. I'm not really sure why this is - perhaps because, for the first time that I can remember, the type of music popular in both the UK & US seem to be in perfect harmony with each other (obviously country aside). Perhaps it's the fact that the digital era has meant that it's easier for songs to be hits at (almost) the same time in both countries rather than having to wait months to come over. Who knows.

For what it's worth, I'd say the peak of the Hot 100 was the mid-to-late 90s. Fairly varied chart with possibilities for any genre to do well (within reason) and the likes of TLC, Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, etc. reaching #1 when they never could in the UK. Good times  I have no idea what the hell happened a few years later but indeed after 2001 it was starting to go o_O in terms of urban overload, with 2004/05 being the absolute nadir - those years were just :puke:, Mariah's domination of the latter year aside. I'll still never take the US seriously for making D4L's Laffy Taffy go to #1 there :/

In fact Adele is doing the double in the US.

I wouldn't have thought the US liked great artists such as Adele with all the rubbish they put out.

Rolling In The Deep has become #1 after 18 weeks

The album Adele 21 is still #1 after 11 weeks on the chart. Even though positions 2 to 8 are all new entries.

Also in the US album chart sees the Re-entry at #11 of Fleetwood Mac - Rumours -- where the hell did that come from???

Thank god they don't have our system then. Glee are crap :puke2:

That'd be the doing of Glee...

About the US urban thing, it does seem like it's mainly the urban-dance stuff that's coming here though.

Down On Me and Look At Me Now have been the two massive urban non-club (well, you can dance to them, but it's not the sort where you dance to the first beat on every bar (i.e. jump up and down) like every song in the UK's current top 10) hits in the US this year, but they just hovered around the low end of the top 40 for a few weeks in the UK, and I've never heard either songs on mainstream radio. Infact, the latter didn't even get released as a single. Except, they decided to release another europop/dance pop song from the album (Beautiful People, although it is very good imo).

And I think they're skipping Beautiful People in the US, and going to another RnB song, which is already charting. From Chris's album, it's almost like he's releasing all the urban songs in the US and all the pop songs in Europe.

Wow! Well done Adele.

Her album 21 doing extremely well in both sides of the country. A non X-Factor person.
