BILLBOARD: Adele's Still 'Deep' Atop Hot 100, Coldplay Makes a Splash

June 08, 2011 5:08 EDT

Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" claims a fifth week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, to be released tomorrow (June 9) on Billboard.com, while Coldplay's "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall" charges in as the chart's top new entry. "Rolling in the Deep" spends a second week atop Radio Songs (150 million in audience, up 5%, according to Nielsen BDS). The multi-format hit rewrites the weekly plays record (5,069) on Adult Pop Songs, where it reigns for a fifth week, tops Pop Songs for a second week and bullets at No. 3 on Adult Contemporary and No. 18 on Rock Songs. "Rolling in the Deep" additionally continues making inroads at urban radio, rising 100-82 on R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. On Digital Songs, "Deep" logs a fifth frame at No. 1 (244,000 downloads sold, down 4%, according to Nielsen SoundScan).

Pitbull's "Give Me Everything," featuring Ne-Yo, AfroJack and Nayer, holds at No. 2 on the Hot 100 with Airplay Gainer honors for a second straight week, lifting 4-3 on Radio Songs (116 million, up 16%). The track spends a third week at No. 2 on Digital Songs (217,000, up 3%). Katy Perry's former Hot 100 No. 1 "E.T.," featuring Kanye West, holds at No. 3; Bruno Mars' "The Lazy Song" rises 6-4; Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor," featuring Pitbull, dips 4-5; and, LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem," featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock, jumps 9-6.

Lady GaGa's "The Edge of Glory" advances 8-7 on the Hot 100, spurred by a 24-15 rise on Radio Songs (51 million, up 31%). The song holds at No. 4 on Digital Songs (166,000, up 1%). "The Edge of Glory" bounds 14-10 on Pop Songs in its fourth week, marking her second-fastest top 10 ascension on the radio airplay ranking. Only the title cut from her new album "Born This Way" soared into the bracket more quickly (two weeks).

The Black Eyed Peas' "Just Can't Get Enough" falls 5-8 on the Hot 100, and Britney Spears' "Till the World Ends" slips 7-9. Lupe Fiasco's "The Show Goes On" rounds out the top 10, rebounding 12-10.

Just outside the Hot 100's top 10, Lil Wayne's "How to Love" blasts 69-12 with the chart's Digital Gainer award in its second week. The song, which showcases the rapper's singing skills, rockets 52-5 on Digital Songs (151,000, up 309%) following its first full week of retail availability.

Coldplay leads 12 new titles (10 debuts and two re-entries) onto the Hot 100, as "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall" opens as the Hot Shot Debut at No. 29. With less than a week at retail and radio (it was released June 3), the track starts on Digital Songs at No. 17 (85,000). It begins with 10 million audience impressions on 122 stations and bows on the Rock Songs (No. 21) and Alternative Songs (No. 23) airplay charts. "Waterfall," released ahead of Coldplay's forthcoming fifth studio album, marks the band's sixth top 40 Hot 100 hit. Its highest-peaking chart entry, "Viva La Vida," began a three-week reign at No. 1 this week in 2008.

As they each rank in the top 10 on other tracks, Pitbull and Katy Perry embark on new chart runs. The former's "International Love," featuring Chris Brown, bows at No. 59, while the latter's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" returns at No. 63. The song had spent a week at No. 67 the week that parent album "Teenage Dream" launched atop the Billboard 200 (Sept. 11, 2010). The video for "Friday," which concurrently debuts on Pop Songs at No. 31, premieres next Tuesday (June 14).

Other notable Hot 100 debuts include Beyoncé's new radio focus track "Best Thing I Never Had" (No. 84), one of three titles on the chart from her forthcoming album "4" ("Run the World (Girls)" falls 29-55 and "1+1" slides 57-89); Linkin Park's "Iridescent" (No. 86), released from the "Transformers 3: Dark Side of the Moon" soundtrack (after being available on the band's most recent album, "Minutes to Midnight"); and, Andy Grammer's "Keep Your Head Up" (No. 94), which marks the first top 10 on Adult Pop Songs (No. 9) by a new male artist in his first chart appearance since Josh Kelley ("Amazing") in 2003.

YAHOO: Making Up For Lost Time

Adele's "Rolling In The Deep" logs its fifth week at #1 on the Hot 100. It's the first song by a English female solo artist to spend that many weeks at #1 since Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" topped the chart for 10 weeks in 1981-'82. (Newton-John was born in Cambridge, England, though she is more identified with Australia, where she grew up.) Adele has more in common with Lulu, the Scottish singer who topped the Hot 100 for five weeks in 1967 with the sleek ballad "To Sir With Love." Lulu sang the song in the Sidney Poitier movie of the same name, in which she played a student. She was just 18 at the time (she turned 19 during the record's run at #1).

Pitbull's "Give Me Everything" (featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer) holds at #2 for the second week. It holds at #1 in the U.K. for the third straight week. Will "Give Me Everything" topple "Rolling In The Deep" and become a transatlantic #1? Stay tuned.

1. Adele, "Rolling In The Deep." The song holds at #1 for the fifth straight week in its 22nd week on the chart. This is its 10th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #1 (244K).

2. Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer, "Give Me Everything." The song holds at #2 for the second week in its 10th week on the chart. This is its fifth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #2 (217K).

3. Katy Perry featuring Kanye West, "E.T." The former #1 smash holds at #3 for the second week in its 17th week on the chart. This is its 15th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #6 (137K).

4. Bruno Mars, "The Lazy Song." The song rebounds from #6 to #4 (its highest ranking to date) in its 15th week on the chart. It's Mars' fifth straight single to reach #4 or higher. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #7 (136K).

5. Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull, "On The Floor." The song dips from #4 to #5 in its 15th week on the chart. This is its 14th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #9 (127K).

6. LMFAO featuring Lauren Bennett & GoonRock, "Party Rock Anthem." The song jumps from #9 to #6 in its 11th week on the chart. This is its third week in the top 10. The song spent four weeks at #1 in the U.K. in April and May. Digital sales rank: #3 (169K).

7. Lady Gaga, "The Edge Of Glory." The song jumps from #8 to #7 in its fourth week on the chart. This is its third week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #4 (166K).

8. The Black Eyed Peas, "Just Can't Get Enough." The song drops from #5 to #8 in its 16th week on the chart. This is its 12th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #13 (100K).

9. Britney Spears, "Till The World Ends." The song drops from #7 to #9 in its 14th week on the chart. This is its ninth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #12 (101K).

10. Lupe Fiasco, "The Show Goes On." The song rebounds from #12 to #10 in its 23rd week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #11 (108K).

"I'm On One" by DJ Khaled featuring Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne drops from #10 to #14 in its third week. Digital sales rank: #10 (123K).

Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" jumps from #14 to #11 in its sixth week. It's Minaj's biggest hit as a lead artist, surpassing "Moment 4 Life" (featuring Drake), which peaked at #13. "Super Bass" jumps from #10 to #8 on Hot Digital Songs (132K).

OneRepublic's "Good Life" jumps from #23 to #16 in its 10th week. It's the group's third biggest hit to date, trailing only "Apologize," its career-making collabo with Timbaland (#2 in 2007) and "Stop And Stare" (#12 in 2008).

"Tonight Tonight" by Hot Chelle Rae jumps from #41 to #27 in its eighth week.

Coldplay's "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" debuts at #29. The song is from the band's upcoming fifth studio album. "Speed Of Sound" and "Viva La Vida," the lead-off hits from the band's last two albums, both made the top 10. "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" includes elements of "I Go To Rio," which Peter Allen co-wrote and which became his signature song.

"International Love" by Pitbull featuring Chris Brown debuts at #59. It's vying to become Pitbull's eighth top 10 hit. It's the third single from Pitbull's upcoming sixth studio album, Planet Pit.

Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" debuts at #63. It's vying to become the fifth chart-topper from Perry's Teenage Dream album. If that should happen (and it has a long way to go), Teenage Dream would become only the second album in history (following Michael Jackson's Bad) to spawn five #1 hits on the Hot 100.

"You And Tequila" by Kenny Chesney featuring Grace Potter (who fronts the Nocturnals) jumps from #92 to #71 in its second week. Chesney is expanding his list of favorite drinks. He has had top 10 country hits with "Keg In The Closet" and "Beer In Mexico."

Beyonce has three songs the current chart, as she continues to search for a breakout hit from her upcoming album, 4. "Best Thing I Never Had," which has the drama of her 2008 ballad smash "If I Were A Boy," debuts at #84. "Run The World (Girls)" drops from its peak position of #29 to #55 in its seventh week. "1+1" drops from #57 to #89 in its second week.

Linkin Park's "Iridescent" debuts at #86. This is the theme song to the expected summer blockbuster Transformers: Dark Of The Moon, which will be released on June 29.

Steven Tyler's "(It) Feels So Good" drops from #91 to #100, three weeks after it debuted and peaked at #35.

It's great to see a British artist like ADELE have success over there, but can you get off and let Pitbull have his turn??

'Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall' debuting at number 29 is pretty impressive as after only one week on the Hot 100, becomes Coldplay's tied third highest peaking single.

2003 Clocks #29

2005 Speed of Sound #8

2008 Viva La Vida #1

2011 Every Teadrop Is a Waterfall #29

TEOG is increasing rapidly on Radio now, and should get top 5 again next week, hopefully #1 when the video drops.

Yay for top 30 for Coldplay, this is a summer hit waiting to happen!!

One can only hope :D

What are the total sales of RITD in the States?

I don't know, but I think it'll be the YTD #1 in a few weeks! :o

What are the total sales of RITD in the States?

3,463,000, according to this thread. (I think those figures are updated to show the 244k it sold for the current chart but I don't understand the dating system of the BBH100 - so it may be 3,707,000 now). It should overtake E.T. as 2011's highest seller very soon barring it suddenly vanishing.

Dear GOD at how stale the Hot 100 is at the moment. There must have only been about 15 top 10 hits in the past 2 months or so! The top 10 just seems to always be a slight reshuffle of the previous week's top 10 :drama: And The Lazy Song has only just peaked this week! And having BEP still top 10 just seems wrong, it hasn't been top 10 on iTunes for quite a while now. Airplay severely f***s up the Hot 100.

If Adele does get a sixth week at #1 (and I don't see why it wouldn't as it's still #1 on both sales and airplay by some margin) would that be the longest running #1 by a British female solo artist in the USA?

Like said before a thousand times, airplay has always been a factor of Hot 100 because it IS part of that chart. It wouldn't be Hot 100 without it :P

I love the Glee-free Hot 100.

Olivia Newton-John has the record with Physical I believe (10 weeks) although she was raised in Australia. If we disqualify her then yes.

Edited by SKOB

Wow @ E.T spending fifteen weeks in the top ten. :o

Last Friday Night has alot to live up to after following FOUR huge #1's. (especially straight after E.T which is just massive)

Well I'd rather it not be the Hot 100 in that case.

I never knew ONJ was British! Was that 10-weeker one of her own songs or one of the Grease songs with John Travolta? If it was the latter I'd exclude that.

Edited by Bray

Nice climbs for Marsha and Lil' Wayne! Great to see Adele still top as well

That Steven Tyler song has the most pathetically unnecessary use of parentheses I've ever seen. Why couldn't they just call it 'It Feels So Good'?

Britiah/Irish artists make up one eighth of the top 40 at the moment :D

Edited by Bray

I wonder if Someone like you will ever explode in the states for her.

I think it could, but they'll probably have to release it as a single, send it to radio stations, make a proper music video. I think she's performed it a few times on TV and didn't have quite the same effect that it had when she performed it at the BRITs.

But I suspect they'll release Set Fire to the Rain as the second single over there.

To be honest, Adele has this sixth week in the bags for #1 and she could be looking for a seventh week since Pitbull still hasn't topped Adele on iTunes.

I keep hearing Rumour Has It on an AC station here, so I think that may be the second single stateside.
