Don't understand why The Horrors aren't listed.

I hope one of the following win

Metronomy

PJ Harvey

Ghostpoet

Ana Calvi

James Blake

I've heard five (and a half I suppose if we want to count what I've heard of Tinie's), and I'd be reasonably pleased to see any of PJ, Adele, Katy, James Blake and Anna Calvi win, though truthfully I'd call Adele and Katy B my favourites of the lot.

I'm thinking I should definitely listen to the Metronomy album though, feels like I'm really late to the party with that one.

Does anyone else think we could be on for a repeat of 2008? In that year the two clear favourites and probably strongest albums were Amy Winehouse and Adele but they split the female soloist vote 50/50 allowing the mediocre Klaxons to win.

This year the four who've been favourite for a while and seem to have the best critical response are James Blake, Adele, PJ Harvey and Anna Calvi. Could the vote be split even more by the judges that prefer that type of music?

The only album I can't understand why was nominated is Katy B. It's so dull and lifeless, a massive disappointment after the first single and 'Perfect Stranger'. If they wanted a dubstep/dance type album then Chase & Status and Magnetic Man are definitely better, even Skream, the Jamie XX remix of Gil Scott-Heron and probably even Example are better.

The prospect of a split vote leading to a mediocre winner is a good reason to have a series of votes to decide the winner. Or, to put it another way, AV.

of those, I have heard material by Elbow, Katy B, Tinie Tempah, Adele and James Blake, one of which I've listened to the parent album, Elbow, but I don't think they'll win this one, so I'm pretty sure PJ Harvey will take this prize

quite surprised at the snub for Radiohead and Horrors :o

how does that work?

Anna Calvi 'Anna Calvi'

Elbow 'Build a Rocket Boys!'

James Blake 'James Blake'

Katy B 'On a Mission'

Metronomy 'The English Riviera'

Tinie Tempah 'Disc-Overy'

PJ Harvey 'Let England Shake'

Gwilym Simcock 'Good Days at Schloss Elmau'

Everything Everything 'Man Alive'

King Creosote & Jon Hopkins 'Diamond Mine'

Adele '21'

Ghostpoet 'Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam'

I really don't think Adele is going to win this.

Personally I would like to see PJ win this for a truly stunning album.

Other than that I can see James Blake easily win this.

And why oh why are the goddamn awful Everything Everything short-listed.

Personally I would like Adele or Katy B to win. 21 is the better album but I feel On A Mission is more musically diverse and pioneers the new(ish) genre UK funky.

Definitely some strange inclusions and omissions. I don't understand the love on here for 'The English Riviera', I found it disappointing.

Anna Calvi 'Anna Calvi'

Gold Panda 'Lucky Shiner'

The Horrors 'Skying'

James Blake 'James Blake'

Jamie xx and Gil-Scott Heron 'We're New Here'

Katy B 'On A Mission'

PJ Harvey 'Let England Shake'

SBTRKT 'SBTRKT''

The Vaccines 'What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?'

Wild Beasts 'Smother'

WU LYF 'Go Tell Fire To The Mountain'

Yuck 'Yuck'

My selection. I doubt I could choose between The Horrors, PJ Harvey, Wild Beasts and WU LYF though.

They would just have a series of votes with the bottom album being eliminated each time until one album has 50% of the vote.

Was that not 2007, with Bat For Lashes being the other one and not Adele?

Why oh why did they even bother nominating a jazz album that is an hour of random piffle played on a piano.

That is just so not album of the year.

Just listening to Ghostpoet and to be honest I am quite surprised.

Only listened to two tracks and I like it much better than James Blake.

Could this be this year's dark horse that no-one's heard of before?

Is it not seemingly compulsory for the Mercurys to nominate a jazz album that nobody's heard of that doesn't stand a chance?

I don't care who it will be the winner. I don't like/don't know any of these artists (except PJ Harvey).

Yes, it's the law. Jazz fan Ken Clarke was in the Cabinet when the Mercury Prize was established and he managed to get the government to pass a law making it compulsory to include a jazz album. Fortunately the rest of the Cabinet couldn't be persuaded to make it compulsory for the jazz album to win at least once every five years. For that, Clarke has never forgiven John Major.
