If Jessie J gets nominated, my respect for this prize will be slashed significantly - it's an absolutely dreadful album. I really don't think they'll go there, though... will they? I suppose it does have the sales and the Sound of 2011 tag behind it.

The Spice Girls were nominated. Anything could happen.

Jessie J's album hasn't been critically acclaimed, it got very mixed reviews - I'd be surprised if it is up

It's only for British albums though! So he's ineligible.

Metronomy are probably my favourite from that list....really hope they get nominated. Although after what Lauren Laverne said, I'm guessing it's unlikely now. :(

What has she said :o

Jessie J had better not get a nomination, the toys will well and truly be thrown out of the pram if she does.

Meanwhile, from judge Lauren Laverne's Twitter in response "Some good calls. Adele defo. I've been saying Metronomy for ages, although I mentioned it to a judge & they...did eyebrows!"

I hope there are some great nominations this year, last year's winner was rather forgettable, and on top of that I forgotten her name. Mumford & Sons were robbed.

The XX?

The XX?

That's it, I was just going to correct myself Speech Debelle was the previous year. I was surprised that she beat BFL and Florence my fave two albums of the year.

Just realised, literally nobody is mentioning Friendly Fires as a possibility! Surely they have more than a good chance of getting nominated

M&S might have sold loads but the album itself is nothing to be really excited about.

Haha. Ok. I'll leave all of you lot alone :P

(Unless it turns out Noah & The Whale/Jessie J get nominated :P)

From Music Week

PJ Harvey is the current 4/1 favourite to win this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize with bookmaker William Hill.

The singer-songwriter’s eighth album Let England Shake is the frontrunner ahead of next Tuesday’s shortlist announcement.

If Harvey did win, she would become the first artist ever to bag the coveted prize twice, having won in 2001 with her fifth album Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea.

This year’s second favourite is Adele at 5/1 and Wild Beasts at 8/1, who were also shortlisted last year.

James Blake and Anna Calvi are both 8/1.

Other high-profile acts in the running are Noah and the Whale (12/1), Hurts (14/1) and Tinie Tempah (20/1), with Jessie J, Radiohead and Elbow all 33/1 and Beady Eye and Arctic Monkeys 40/1 shots.

William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly said: “The past year has been fantastic for British music, with Adele really setting the benchmark, but we believe PJ Harvey has the slight edge and is leading the market.”

The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, September 6

If Beady Eye get nominated it will be ridiculous. They're probably the most boring band doing the rounds right now.

It's the low-profile contenders I'm interested in: would like to see nominations for Bill Wells & Adian Moffat, Blanck Mass (highly unlikely) and Mogwai (absolute shoo-in and a real contender for the actual prize itself).

Wouldn't bother me either if the Arctic Monkeys took home the prize for a second time, Suck it and See is a pretty decent album. I'm also surprised the Vaccines aren't being touted since the panel are bound to have a few NME reps on it.

Sales shouldn't come into it so I dont think Adele should be nominated just because of the commercial success of the album.

I've no idea who's judging this time around but The Guardian say this was the judging panel from 2009, when Speech Debelle won.

Anna Calvi 'Anna Calvi'

James Blake 'James Blake'

Katy B 'On a Mission'

Metronomy 'The English Riviera'

Tinie Tempah 'Disc-Overy'

PJ Harvey 'Let England Shake'

Gwilym Simcock 'Good Days at Schloss Elmau'

Everything Everything 'Man Alive'

King Creosote & Jon Hopkins 'Diamond Mine'

Adele '21'

Ghostpoet 'Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam'

The shortlist is the furthest out it's ever been from my personal taste. Of the 9 acts I've heard something by, I only like three of them. And of those James Blake's album is hit and miss, Elbow's is their 4th best of 5, so I suppose I shall be hoping Metronomy win.

Surprised at the lack of The Horrors especially!

Glad to see James Blake and Metronomy nominated. I'm still hoping for a win for the latter.
