Clearly none of those are the worst singers on the planet, but to be fair, if they weren't attractive, they wouldn't be successful singers. Cheryl Cole, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Kesha etc.. are known for doing poor live vocal performances, but they are deemed attractive enough to garner record deals. There are so many singers on YouTube (for example) that are absolutely incredible, but haven't even been signed. So I think it's fair for people to slate artists like that when they have record deals and are making millions, but aren't actually that talented.

Appearance is EVERYTHING in the music business, there are exceptions yes, but on the whole image and sex sells. That's why Record labels seem to value image over talent. It's sad really.

Fourthly, some of the poor vocalists are good at other things in music. For example, you've got Ke$ha and Katy Perry who are good song-writers.

Yeah. Seriously, I'm sure even artists like Adele and Eminem have a cringe line somewhere, in one of the songs they've written. Just, luckily for them, not the very first line of their most popular song!!

No, but seriously, if I like a song, I like it. I'm not going to stop thinking Firework is a brilliant song just because the female in the music video is attractive. And I won't like a song just because the artist is ugly. Ugly artists need to make good songs for me to like them, just like everybody else.

I've seen Katy Perry live. No she's not on the same level as Adele or Beyonce but she's not awful. I was quite surprised. Then she goes and pulls out dross like her XF performance last year. Rihanna has improved drastically as well imo. Just the way she sounds on her records is not as irritating as her earlier material. Ke$ha I reserve judgement, mainly because I dislike the woman and find her quite fake, but I wouldn't call her talentless, she's clearly a very good writer. I don't even think Cheryl Cole is that bad either. Again, not a worldclass vocal talent and even though I'd class her as being a poor vocalist, she's not dreadful. 'Fight For This Love' is one of my favourite pop songs of recent years, yet even that makes me cringe towards the end when she tries to add some 'shouty' vocals to the background.

All that said I think it's unfair to mention said artists in the same category as Rebecca Black. I wasn't saying she is the worst sounding person to ever open their mouth and release a record. If anything she needs decent material to disguise her lack of vocal ability. That if anything as others have said works for the artists that are being thrown around.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. Some of them aren't very good singers tbh, but at the same time, they can get waaaaay more criticism than they deserve, I think.

Appearance is really everything, I agree. In the top 40 I'd say The Wanted (well, Max only tbh), Jason DeRulo, Example, Calvin Harris, Roy off Scouting for Girls (), Chris Brown and Enrique Iglesias (sex god ) are 'attractive' (to me anyway) from the guys. Of the women, Beyonce (STUNNING ), Kelis, Katy Perry, Adele (she is really pretty despite the 'fat' jibes - she isn't even that fat :(), Nicki Minaj, Alexandra Stan, Rihanna, Nicole Scherzinger, Jennifer Lopez, all of The Saturdays and Wynter Gordon are attractive to me. Jessie J is pretty as well, she's just not attractive to me.

As a '70/80% gay and 20/30% straight' bisexual, I find the above quite odd. I think appearance is basically all for females, but a few males can get away with being more 'average' looking (Ed Sheeran being a prime example), whereas Adele and Jessie J are really the only women who break the 'stereotype' by being more 'normal' looking.

Come to think of it, I can't think of many male artists in the charts that I've seen girls lust after really. There's all the boybands (JLS, etc.), and then Enrique Iglesias, Drake and Chris Brown, who girls are always going on about how great they look. Also, a lot of girls seem to like Loick Essien, although I don't really know what he looks like.

I agree about the women. All of them are stunning tbh. I think when you become a famous pop star though, you get the best make-up artists in the world. You get edited to look good in a lot of the photo shoots and videos. You have the money to afford the very best products and surgery, etc. I doubt a lot of them would be so good-looking in real life, but I won't complain about that.

I can't imagine your average teen girl finding Example, Calvin Harris or any of SFG attractive  I think the attractiveness is more important for female artists.

I definitely agree with the improving thing. Rihanna has come on leaps and bounds, her vocal performance of "California King Bed" on American Idol was surprisingly very good and I've seen good performances from Katy Perry too. I wouldn't label any of the women I mentioned as talentless, as some of them are strong songwriters, but I can definitely see where people are coming from when they slate artists for not being able to sing live. It frustrates me that talented vocalists aren't as successful despite having more vocal talent than some of today's pop stars.

:o Lots of girls in my school fancy him though  You can't deny he's pretty 'normal' looking though, compared to, say, Enrique.

I agree with you. Ed Sheeran is good-looking, but not on Enrique's level! He's practically a super model tbh. I remember I was sitting next to a massive poster of him in an airport once, and all the females would stare at it as they walked past. I like to imagine they were all staring at me, but probably not.

:o Lots of girls in my school fancy him though  You can't deny he's pretty 'normal' looking though, compared to, say, Enrique.

I'd say that most popular British male acts are 'normal' looking, Calvin Harris and Example certainly are too imo not to mention all of Take That, yet they all still have their female fans! The big international stars have so much money every day spent on their appearance, Enrique even had his trademark mole removed for cosmetic reasons!

I can't imagine your average teen girl finding Example, Calvin Harris or any of SFG attractive  I think the attractiveness is more important for female artists.

Loads of girls in my school fancy Example  Haven't heard any labelling of 'fit', 'hot' or 'peng' for Calvin or SFG though. And as I said in my above post, I also think males can get away with looks a bit more than females.

lol. "Peng"? Never heard that one before! :o

Males can definitely get away with it more (also, I think the males themselves care less about looking good). Snoop Dogg for example. Coolest guy on the planet, without a doubt, but he's pretty ugly imo. Although he's almost 40 I guess, but still.

Today's top 100 update

Two new entries today. Red Hot Chili Peppers go straight in at #22 with 'The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie', the first single from their upcoming 10th studio album 'I'm With You'. The album version of 'Party Rock Anthem' by LMFAO feat. Lauren Bennett (spelled correctly) and GoonRock from their second studio album 'Sorry For Party Rocking' enters at #89. A bit of a resurgence of the 59p songs has led to re-entries from The Kooks (Naïve, #74), Florence + The Machine (Dog Days Are Over, #79), Beyoncé (If I Were A Boy, #88), Biffy Clyro (Many Of Horror, #91) and Pulp (Common People, #96). The Black Eyed Peas, Lady GaGa, Linkin Park, Beady Eye, Jessie J, Take That and Wretch 32 each have an entry drop out to accommodate the 7 top 100 entries.

Yep my comment was tongue in cheek, she is actually quite good at writing. Love that song

Yeah I gathered. :P Tbh even those similies in 'Firework' are pretty good despite how weird they sound.

'Peacock' is not that good but it's better than the likes of 'Friday' and 'Baby'. But, then, what isn't?
