Could we say Ellie Goulding? She had loads of Hype, had a huge first proper single, then completely flopped with Guns and Horses, the album didnt sell very well and then along came Your Song and the album went from Gold to 2xPlatinum?

Im trying to think of others but my mind is too tired

Mainly J.Lo & Nicole Scherzinger really isn't it ^_^

Hopefully Sugababes will be added to this

His solo career was struggling to get off the ground before Angels. I saw him in his first solo tour when I was able to get a ticket for a modest sized venue (Southampton Guildhall) less than a week before the gig.

But had his career started by that time? It was his first solo album and it took Angels to start selling big but it was not much of a 'turnaround' really. It was his first era and it turned out to be succesful. It may be special for him but it has really happened to alot of artists (I mean to start selling albums after the second or third consecutive single).

As much as I would like Mariah to make a strong comeback it looks like she doesn't have much potential left outside the US. She is one of the most succesful females of all time but she is 'old news' now. Memoirs was a good album (also characteristic of Mariah's style) but it flopped everywhere outside the US (perhaps even in the US). Obsessed was a strong mainstream single but it didn't manage to chart high anywhere. (even in the US it must have gotten only as high as 8 or 9). As for the rest of her singles I doubt non-fans even know they existed. I don't know how a new Mariah album would change the situation.

Gary Barlow? He drowned as a solo artist but Take That (even if he played the most important role) are not Gary and they never flopped. They left when they were top and they came back on top once more (and will probably leave at the top of their game in the coming years). There has not been any twist at TT success imo. They have always been more or less successful.

THIS

He was a total disaster. Terrible songs, terrible hair, weight problem, hanging around with Oasis. He was having a bad 1997 until Angels happened.

His first era can be divided in two - a $h!t first half and a great second half. He had a great turn around with Angels.

Alicia keys turned herself round

She had the odd hit but she never took the UK by storm like she did in the states. But empire state of mind made the UK love her suddenly and this led to Element of freedom being her top selling album here plus Doesn't mean anything, Try sleeping and Empire part 2 selling very well.

Believe it or not, 'Songs In A Minor' is actually her biggest selling album here in the UK. It's on about 1.2 million IIRC. 'Element of Freedom' is on around 850k-900k I believe. But singles wise, it's DEFINITELY her biggest era to date. It got her 3 top 10 singles, all of which sold over 150k I think.

I know what you are talking about. I just see it more generally: LTAL was a huge success + it was Robbie's first album = he was successful since his debut solo album.

Even in numbers the album flopped for only about 2 months... But if we split album eras into two or more pieces I guess you are right it was a turn around.

So I sort of misunderstood the whole thread with Morrissey as this isn't about coming back in the meaning of between two album eras?

In that case Elbow springs to mind as their The Seldom Seen Kid started at no. 5 but fell quickly until One Day Like This and Mercury Prize came along. It went to sell triple platinum in the end.

I'm sure TEOF passed a million a while ago?

Looking back it doesn't look like much of a dip but having lived through it he was failing badly and it was a very public failing. He was all over the place and his antics were enhancing the feeling of someone who was going down the pan. The turn around was more more dramatic than it looks from this point.

I don't think you can really count her - music careers are usually defined album by album, and technically she's only released one.

Yeah I've been told so before, but I was not even ten when all this took place so I guess I wasn't really interested...

I thought that too, but I think it was in a recent sales thread that it's sales were ~950k or something

Texas come to mind! They were really struggling by the mid-90s after their breakthrough in 1989, but they came back bigger than ever with White On Blonde in 1997...

Kylie sprung to mind the minute i saw this thread, in the late 90,s kylie was more or less written off so she turned her career around brilliantly in 2000 with spinning around and light years, fever then catapulted her even further.

Take That lads, i dont think any of them or any take that fans including myself ever thought they would reform and be as massive as they turned out to be.

Cher, i think believe was a huge turnaround for her at that time as it ended up been her biggest selling single, the album also done very well for her.

Was he also not on the verge of being dropped before 'Angels'? I recall reading that a few times. That was definitely a lucky break for him...

Oooh Atomic Kitten were another act! They were about to be dropped after their first 4 singles under performed, despite the amount of promotion each release was given. ('Follow Me' is so underrated! :() but then, BAM. 'Whole Again' and they get a massive number 1 single, that becomes a classic! In fact, they have 13 out of 14 Top 10 hits! (Should have been 14 out of 15! WHY DID THEY CANCEL 'YOU ARE'?!!?!?! :manson:) And 10 of those were after 'Follow Me''s disastrous peak of #20!

EDIT:

The top 10 chart run for 'Whole Again' was incredible for 2001!

{1}-1-1-1-2-3-4-4-7-7-8-> 11 weeks top 10 for a 2001 single was BRILLIANT!

Nicole Scherzinger is a terrible example. Killer Love is actually her proper debut so what's there to compare it to. Her Name is Nocole wasn't released but she initially tried to crack the US. The only thing that was released here was Baby Love (with no promo) and did ok..

I thought Cher (Album and Believe single) in 1998, Mariah TIOM and LEONA LEWIS - Collide era... Woops sorry I just looked into the future (I hope)

I don't think Leona's in such a position that her career needs turning around, however this next album for her is crucial for keeping her foothold in the industry.
