I'm not sure even Madonna's death would be as huge as MJ's. In fact I don't think there are any more living megastars whose death would cause MJ-level hysteria. Maybe Paul McCartney?

I would've thought Madonna's death would be close to MJ's tbh, Paul McCartney too. Not sure anyone else would really cause mass hysteria.
Are you serious Bray? Madonna won't be quite on the scale of MJ? Really? Why do you think she won't? Considering she is essentially, the female Michael Jackson...

I think the "problem" with Madonna is that she won't die until she's 120 years old and her pop career will seem like, well, a century agol.

Both Michael's and Amy's deaths are tragic... Madonna probably will peacefully pass away while doing the latest yoga moves.

Robbie Williams?

I don't know, I just don't think she would cause hysteria on the scale MJ did.

Don't get me wrong, it would be a massive story and there would be mass mourning etc., I just don't think it'd be quite on the scale of MJ's death. :P

I think the controversy of MJ and Wino's lives in contrast to their fantastic music is part of why their deaths have been so big, whereas Madonna seems a bit 'pedestrian' (although there was some controversy with the Like A Prayer video I suppose?). Although Madonna's death would probably still be 'bigger' than Winehouse's.

I'm not even sure Paul McCartney's death will have quite the same effect as MJ... I dunno. I just don't think he's as talked about by all generations as Michael Jackson or Madonna were/are. I can see it having some sort of effect (maybe similar to Wino's except as he has a discography far greater, there will be more songs getting the effect and stuff) but I don't think he'll be quite at MJ's sort of levels...

Uh... no. MJ had a huge MUSICAL impact... Madonna had a huge cultural impact, but she hasn't had anything close to as big a musical impact. She's never released anything that had anywhere near as much critical acclaim as the 'Thriller' album; no-one ever talked about Madonna revolutionising music (and people tend to remember musical impact more than cultural impact, which is why so many people have fond memories of MJ's peak). And she's never even had one single album that sold HUGE amounts (relative to the musical legends)... in fact, 'Back to Black' has sold more than any one of Madonna's albums, and BTB was released in an inferior sales climate. There wouldn't be anywhere near as much hysteria if Madonna died compared to MJ.

CHER's but it ain't gonna happen! Not in a million years!

You clearly haven't done your research then.

Macca's career having been dead for a long, long time would probably stop his death from being as big a story as it perhaps should be (especially if he dies after Ringo).

Really, as I said I think MJ was the last megastar whose death could cause such mass hysteria.

I'm sure Madge's only album to outsell BTB was a greatest hits collection?

Just to clarify, I meant it's sold more in the UK. :)

Death of Kylie Minogue will also be a big shock in the UK

Again, she had a bigger cultural impact than a musical impact.

And you still wouldn't be right, "The Immaculate Collection" still remains top dog for female albums (until "21" probably passes it soon).

Iirc, that sold about 3m, in comparison to BTB's ~3.2m. I might be wrong though.

5 songs top 100 now :D

I think if I-tunes was around in 1991, Freddie Mercury would have had an MJ style hysteria. I can see Queen getting a top 10 this November to commemorate 20 yrs.

I do agree about Madonna and Kylie making only a cultural impact, but I think they'd get a top 10 hit to honour their memory. Paul McCartney is a bit 50/50, Cher would in the US but not as much in the UK.

I think Madonna's is much more familiar with younger people than Paul McCartney. Like kids today grew up listening to Hung Up and 4 Minutes, whilst I doubt they listened to much Paul McCartney in comparison.
