Never thought I'd see the day when 'Back To Black' was at #7 on UK iTunes.

I know it's a morbid subject but imagine Adele's sales if anything tragic happened to her. She's looking to be even bigger than Amy worldwide.

I know it's a morbid subject but imagine Adele's sales if anything tragic happened to her. She's looking to be even bigger than Amy worldwide.

I'd say she's already bigger than Amy worldwide. Plus, Adele has massive success in both singles and albums.

Rolling in the Deep, Someone Like You and Set Fire to the Rain have all been #1 in multiple countries already. Even in the US, she's currently got 4 songs in the top 100 on iTunes I noticed! :o

I don't think it would have as big effect as you think - though it would have a big effect. Adele has only just released her second album which is already selling fantastically well - Adele is already very exposed. Amy on the other hand hasn't released new material for half a decade, meaning her material isn't fresh in people's minds and theres a generation of people hearing her material for the first time.

Today's top 100 update (8:30 positions becuase I was dumb and forgot to do the update at 8)

11 new entries today. We'll get the new releases out of the way first. X Factor 2008 runners-up JLS go straight in at #1 with their Dev-featuring seventh single 'She Makes Me Wanna', the first single from their as yet untitled 3rd album. It will be their fifth official #1 if it gets there, following 'Beat Again', 'Everybody In Love', 'The Club Is Alive' and 'Love You More'. Hackney-born, Irish-based singer Maverick Sabre goes in at #30 with his first single 'Let Me Go', taken from his upcoming self-titled début album. He previously got to #31 officially featuring on Professor Green's 'Jungle' and then got to #52 on 'In The Air', credited as True Tiger feat. Professor Green and Maverick Sabre. British singing/dancing/rapping group Six D go straight in at #46 with their début single 'Best Damn Night'.

The other 8 new entries are slightly different. As I'm sure everyone is already aware (:P) legendary British soul singer Amy Winehouse was found dead in her flat yesterday and as is normally the case when a famous musician dies, sales of her music have skyrocketed. Her highest entry is incidentally the cheapest, with 'Back To Black' (straight in at #10) having been reduced to 59p. The rest are all at the full price of 99p - 'Rehab' at #27, 'Tears Dry On Their Own' at #29, 'Love Is A Losing Game' at #35, 'You Know I'm No Good' at #40 (these first five all from her 2006 second and last studio album 'Back To Black' which is back at #1 and #5 on the iTunes Albums chart), her own version of The Zutons' 'Valerie' at #49 (from the deluxe edition of 'Back To Black'), the Mark Ronson version of the same song featuring her at #54 (from Ronson's 2007 second studio album 'Version') and finally her version of The Shirelles' 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow' at #76 (recorded for the soundtrack to 'Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason' in 2004).

blink-182, Templecloud, The Horrors, Chipmunk, Nicole Scherzibger, Friendly Fires, Jason Derülo, Bruno Mars, Chase & Status, The Killers and Biffy Clyro each have dropouts to accommodate the 11 top 100 entries.

I'm sorry but I don't believe that. Many British singers have been successful worldwide, Amy wasn't the first. Would other female singers be successful if Amy hadn't done it first? Probably.

Amy was massively influential on late 00s music trends. I agree that it's a massive generalisation to say that she was fully responsible for the success of Leona and Adele etc internationally - in the case of the former, Simon Cowell would have pushed Leona through in the US no matter what.

That said, Adele, Duffy, Gabriella Cilmi etc...may not even have been signed if not for the success of Amy, that type of music wasn't exactly lighting up the charts pre-Back To Black, but as soon as record labels had realised what had happened to Amy and got on board, the charts were saturated with it in 2008. Even if they had been signed, it's likely that they'd have been asked to make different types of albums by the record companies. It's hard to imagine what the musical landscape of 2008 might have been like without Back To Black, she definitely opened doors for other artists.

I don't like it when people say things like that really. Because in most cases the said artist wasn't the first to do it, and usually the following artists could've done it without them anyway.

Amy Winehouse was pretty much responsible for the 2008 soul trend, I remember watching Freshly Squeezed on Channel 4 in the morning every day and each day there'd be a different Winehouse soundalike. Clearly record companies just wanted to capitalize on her success, and signed the likes of Duffy and Adele. She's hardly single handedly responsible for Adele's success though...

So I guess I'm the only one that lol'd out loud at 'Chair' Lloyd. :(

"You Know I'm No Good" should go to #1! It's her best one.

YKING is my favourite Amy Winehouse song too - B2B is my 2nd fave though

My favourite Amy song is 'Valerie', though I guess it technically isn't her song.

As for the JLS song, I don't mind it but I hope it only gets one week as I love Swagger Jagger.

Second version of 'Rehab' out of the top 300.

I reckon the first 6 will all be in the Tuesday mids, then on Sunday the first 2 or 3 will still be top 40. Definitely looking good for 8 top 100 entries :D

Well, good to see Magnetic Man & P Money top 100 at last, I wish they'd climb faster though :(

She is not yet I would say. That's because she is more mainstream and less special. Amy had all this Emo thing going on and was more of an artistic appearence and character overall. Plus had therefore all this negative and postive publishity following her around. Musically I think 21 is close to Back to Black. Two of the best british talents of the decade (if not the two best). :cheer:

I don't think her songs have been no1 in many countries to be fair. Especially SFTTR mustnot have achieved that anywhere. But even RITD must only have the no1 of the US and SLY the UK one and perhaps a FEW more.

Edited by 7heDreamer

Why is B2B doing the best? I would expect rehab to be her highest charting or YKING, not B2B.
Back to Black is the only reduced priced AW song which is probably a major reason why, but I'd say it was generally regarded as one of her most loved ones and the tone of the song is pretty appropriate too...
