 I really appreciate this post

We are very glad for the amazing support we have got from the whole world :)

Cal, I admire how you know so much about Norway! You know things about my country I don't even know :)

I'm a Scandinavian at heart. :heehee: Although, I usually do get mixed up between Norway and Sweden on a lot of their values, but most are quite similar. I'm in contact with a few people around Norway (all online, but have known them for so long now that we'd even consider each other as friends, even though we've never met.) and they've just told me a few things about the aftermath of this and how people want harsher prison sentences or even the death penalty. Most people in every country don't know much about their justice system (I really have no idea how the Irish one works!) so it's understandable that they don't know that you can keep being re-sentenced if you're a threat to society.

With regards to the media jumping to conclusions: I can see where they got the idea from, but it was really obvious that when the shootings happened at Utøya that it was domestic terrorism. Okay, I'll admit that I did suspect it to be Islamic when the bomb hit Oslo (only because it also damaged the VG offices, and Norwegian tabloids [not sure which ones] did reprint those idiotic Danish cartoons taking the piss out of Mohammad), but then I remembered that Norway is operating on summer hours, i.e they finish work at 3pm (which is really annoying if you're a tourist :P). If it was Islamic then I'm sure, judging by past attacks, that they wouldn't blow up an empty Government quarter...

Errr Grimly mate - 2 Al Qaeda splinter groups took responsibility for the attacks on Friday night, when the tabloids printed their headlines, only Al Qaeda had claimed responsibility - it was only when N.Police cleared it up on Sat morning. You could say they should read and confirm sources before printing, but they wrote what they saw on F.night.

I concur with what Suedehead said, it was blatantly obvious that it wasn't an AQ attack... For a start, when reports came that police took in Breivik alive instead of him detonating himself, that was really the first major clue.... ;) The Tabloids really really should have checked or been more cautious before printing it as fact, because they just made themselves look like even bigger fools than they already are.....

It was fairly evident from the start that the shootings on the island had nothing to do with Al Qaeda. By Friday evening Breivik had been arrested. The first editions of the tabloids generally go to press later than the broadsheets. However, the Sun was still saying it was an AQ attack but all the other papers (apart from the Express and the Mail which didn't bother reporting it on the front page at all) were more cautious.

Hmm, now that's interesting..... The Mail not putting it on the cover couldn't have anything to do with the fact that Breivik is basically a walking Hate Mail editorial, could it...?

AUF-member Håkon Sandbakken braved the rain and went to Utøya although he did not want to. On the ferry out to what would be a massacre, was also the now accused 32-year-old.

Sandbakken, who is vice chairman of Bærum AUF, has described how he felt after Friday's events, written for the Asker and Bærum Budstikke.

His first encounter with the man in police uniform came while they waited for the ferry out to Utøya.

"I remember I responded that the man came in a civilian car, and I joked that we should check his credentials and joked about the man really was not being from the police. All based on the civilian car," said the 22-year-old.

The man, who has since been identified as Anders Behring Breivik (32), said that he would make a routine check on Utøya, and went with Sandbakken and a handful of others onboard the ferry.

When you think that Fox News pundit Glenn Beck cannot get any more stupid and foolish he still manages to sink further. What a bast*rd did he even go to school.

Glenn Beck the rightwing US broadcaster and Tea Party favourite, has compared those who were massacred on the Norwegian island of Utøya to the Nazi party's youth wing."There was a shooting at a political camp, which sounds a little like the Hitler youth, or, whatever. I mean, who does a camp for kids that's all about politics. Disturbing," said Beck on his syndicated radio show. The comments were condemned by Torbjørn Eriksen, a former press secretary to Jens Stoltenberg, Norway's prime minister.Eriksen described the comment as "a new low" for Beck, telling the Daily Telegraph: "Young political activists have gathered at Utøya for over 60 years to learn about and be part of democracy, the very opposite of what the Hitler Youth was about. Glenn Beck's comments are ignorant, incorrect and extremely hurtful."

Glenn Beck is either going to end up dead, in jail, or waving a gun in public.... He's completely deranged.... -_-

I think you could add Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and probably even Bill O'Reilly to that list. Oh, and Michelle Bachmann and Sarah Palin will either make a living on reality TV (in Palin's case, continue to) or end their days in isolation in a retirement house or a nuthouse.

Texts messages between a mother and her terrified daughter who was on Norway's Utoya island during Friday's massacre have been released.

Julie Bremnes, 16, was attending the Labour party youth camp on the island when Anders Behring Breivik opened fire, killing 68 people.

A further eight people were killed in a car bombing in Oslo just hours before.

From 5.40pm on July 22, Julie sent her mother Marianne Bremnes a text every five minutes for two hours to update her on the unfolding situation.

Mrs Bremnes told Sky News Online the first message said: "Mummy, tell the police they must be quick. People are dying here."

From then, Julie described how she had run down to the shore and was hiding behind some rocks.

Mrs Bremnes said she felt "helpless because there was nothing I could do".

"I hoped police were on their way and I would get my girl back," she added.

Five of Julie's friends were killed in the tragedy but her mum told Sky: "She's okay, she's quite tough and has healthy reactions, but it's early, I don't know what the long-term effects will be."

---

Below is the transcript of the mother and daughter's messages:

Julie: Mummy, tell the police that they must be quick. People are dying here!

Mother: I'm working on it, Julie. The police are on their way. Dare you call me?

J: No.

J: Tell the police that there is a mad man running around and shooting people.

J: They must hurry!

M: The police know and they have had many calls. It is going well, Julie. Police are calling us now. Give us a sign of life every five minutes please?

J: OK.

J: We are in fear for our lives.

M: I understand that very well, my darling. Stay hidden, do not move anywhere! The police are already on their way, if they haven't already arrived! Do you see anyone injured or killed?

J: We are hiding in the rocks along the coast.

M: Good! Should I ask your grandfather to come down and pick you up when everything is safe again? You have the option.

J: Yes.

M: We will contact Grandpa immediately.

J: I love you even if I still misbehave from time to time.

J: And I'm not panicking even if I'm s*** scared.

M: I know that my darling. We love you too very much. Do you still hear shooting?

J: No.

M: Have you heard anything from the other people from Tromso? Grandpa is on his way down.

J: The police are here.

M: The person shooting is said to be in police uniform. Be careful! What happens to you now?

J: We do not know.

M: Can you talk now?

J: No. He is still shooting!

M: Joergen has swum to the shore. I just spoke to his father. This is everywhere on the national news now, all attention on Utoya now. Be careful! When you get the chance, you come to the mainland and stay with Grandpa of Hamar.

J: I'm still alive.

M: And thanks and praise for that.

J: We are waiting to be picked up by the police. We heard shooting just now, so we dared not get up.

M: Good! Good, well done. The evacuation is now ongoing, they are saying on TV.

J: We hope we will be picked up by someone soon. Can they not catch him soon?!

M: The anti-terrorism unit is there and they are working on catching him.

J: OK.

M: Should we try to get the flight home tomorrow?

J: I have no time to think about that now.

M: I understand that.

M: Do you know if they have managed to catch him?

M: Will keep you posted, my darling. We are following everything on television.

M: Hey, are you there?

J: Yes. The helicopters are circling above us.

M: Then you should be OK?

J: They are looking for people in the water, we have not been picked up yet!

J: What are they saying in the news?

M: The police are also arriving by boat to Utoeya, otherwise nothing new. It is not clear what's happened to the shooter so keep still. Wait for someone to pick you up.

M: Now they have taken him!

HEART-BREAKING!

Particularly the part where her mum warns her about Breivik in disguise as the Police and Julie texting her mum "I'm alive". :(

A video interview from Sky News to her Mum can be seen HERE! That presenter couldn't sound any more interested or sincere, could he? -_-

A moving set of messages and a terrible interview. Some of the interviews with survivors on the BBC over the weekend were incredible. You could tell that the interviewer was really moved by the story and were struggling to find words for the next question. They seemed really humbled by it all and it made for very powerful television.

The solidarity that the Norweigian people have been showing is just amazing, it makes me proud and I'm not even nearly Norweigian! My uncle, auntie and cousins all live in Oslo but fortunately they were on holiday at the time and are totally safe thank god.

If anything, this whole thing has made me want to go back! It's reminded me just what a great country Norway is and how amazing the people are.

Indeed, and someone should mention to Rupert Murdoch the next time he does one of his acting jobs, "hey, dude, this is how 'humbled' is supposed to look"...... -_-

2nd video he is telling people to get away, incase of another bomb or glass that can hit him, the next second he is INSIDE the building

Some are criticizing the response time to Utøya by the police, but I don't think they fully understand what was happening. From what I've been reading (the police statements), the police couldn't get there as quick as they should have because normal police helicopters can't transport groups for an airdrop, and there was only one military helicopter available (all others were in Oslo, which is understandable) but that was in Rygge. The police had to get to Utøya by car, and then there were no suitable boats to bring them over, and then there were a number of problems with the small local boats (engine failing/filling up with water because police equipment was so heavy). I can fully understand why there were no suitable boats (it's a lake - only small leisure boats would be allowed). This is why Breivik bombed Oslo, and it worked. It was to divert all police and military resources to Oslo so that he would have a lot of time to carry out his "plan". Obviously it's absolutely tragic but I think the police did all they could do under the circumstances.

What is the official timeline of events? There are two different ones, and I don't know which is correct. One states that it took the police 90 minutes to reach the island, the other only 60 minutes from when the local police station were alerted to when Brevik was arrested. The latter is far more realistic and does fit in with all reports, but it's all quite confusing!

I totally agree with you Cal. It was clearly part of his evil plan to create havoc in Oslo thus giving him more time on Utøya.

Which proves he's not "insane" or just some random crazy if he can actually lucidly plan and think ahead in that manner... His actions were pre-meditated, I wouldnt at all be surprised if he had researched police response times....

Online minute silence? Is that when nobody posts anything for a minute?

Yep! It wouldn't be as evident on Facebook, but people seem to Tweet ridiculous crap every two seconds so maybe they'll stop for a minute. :P Hopefully this will encourage more awareness towards other attacks or disasters, particularly the East African Famine. Stuff like this goes viral and nobody profits from it, so I'll be taking part! :D
