The 'Promises' EP is back up to #6 again on iTunes Albums :D Either that or the albums feed keeps reverting as they've gone up and down from #6 a few times now. Never been outside the top 10 though.

His album, Get Rich of Die Trying, was the biggest-selling album of 2003 in the world (so compare it to 21) I believe, and I read that it's the 4th best-selling hip hop album of all time!

4th? What on Earth are the top 3? I assume at least one is by Eminem? Maybe one of the Wu-Tang Clan albums?

I don't have a clue what the top 3 are actually. I would imagine from Eminem, the Marshall Mathers LP will be one.

Also, this is from Wikipedia, but to compare Lady Gaga and 50 Cent's album sales:

Lady Gaga: "In the United States, the album sold over 1.11 million copies in its first week, the largest first-week album sales in over six years (i.e. since 50 Cent in 2005 )."

50 Cent: "The album debuted at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling over 1.14 million copies in its first week."

And this was without 50 Cent's album being 99p, mind. There must've been so much hype for it back then!

And 50 Cent's follow-up album, The Massacre, was the biggest-selling album in the US in 2005.

So I'd say he did better than Lady Gaga in albums. And 50 Cent must be one of a very select few artists who has had two of his albums be year-end #1! :o The only other ones I think did it are Michael Jackson and Elton John. Maybe Adele will do it if her next album is big enough.

Gaga is a far bigger international sucsess than 50 Cent with her first album album. Sure 'Get Rich of Die Trying' was huge, but mainly in the US. Of the massive 12 million copies it sold in the first year it was released, over 8 million were from the US. The other 4 million were worldwide sales, I am not even sure if it sold over 1 million in the UK, and it never managed to get to #1 in the albums chart, only at #2 here. Sure, he was huge, but mainly in the US, not the entire world (well, not to Gaga level anyway).

Since when were Gaga and 50 Cent in competition with each other over sales? Both are big in their own ways and have sold respectable amounts to say the least. :)

Yeah true. Considering he's a rapper though, he did incredibly well worldwide. 50 Cent is one of the few rappers to make it massive in Europe for example. Most rappers don't do that well there, but 50 Cent has had 3 #1 singles in Europe (In Da Club, Candy Shop and Ayo Technology), and his 2nd and 3rd albums got to #1 (although apparently his first didn't! :o). Lady Gaga has it easy, since she sings electropop. It's easy to be big in Europe, etc. with that music.

And about the top 3 hip hop albums, I found this:

50 Cent's 2003 breakthrough album Get Rich Or Die Tryin' tops the 8 million mark in sales this week. It's the fourth best-selling rap album in history, following Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP (10,341,000) and The Eminem Show (9,928,000) and Nelly's Country Grammar (8,489,000).
The Marshall Mathers LP sold 1.76 million in its first week! :o Makes even 50 Cent's first week sales look pathetic.

And people laughed at me a few weeks back when I said Nelly was one of the biggest rappers of the past decade, but look at those album sales!

GaGa's first album sold 13 million worldwide also, so 50 c**t wasn't 'bigger' at all...

Um, Lady Gaga will never get a year-end #1 in the US, let alone two. Plus, it's easy to sell albums in the likes of Japan and Europe when you have singles like Poker Face. Comapred to 50 Cent who had singles like 21 Questions advertising the album. Of course his isn't going to sell as much worldwide. Considering how un-mainstream his music was in comparison to Lady Gaga, his worldwide success was phenomenal.

So Christina Perri has stalled and doesn't fall marginally anymore due to the price increase, which means the whole strategy is working. The labels only care about the cash-in, rather than the position, and they definitely recieve a much higher income from this now.
Since when?

Since this morning, at least.

26. Marry You - Bruno Mars

31. Wet - Nicole Scherzinger

35. Lift Off (feat. Beyoncé) - JAY Z & Kanye West

41. Who's Laughing Now - Jessie J

146. Cheers (Drink to That) - Rihanna

457. End of Time - Beyoncé

Hopefully Bruno, Nicole, Jessie and Janyonce can all go top 40 officially this week. ^_^

Since this morning, at least.

Well I made all of those statements before this morning. :kink:

GaGa's first album sold 13 million worldwide also, so 50 c**t wasn't 'bigger' at all...

The Fame sold 13 million or are you including TFM too?

Swagger Jagger down to #5 now. And Drake up to #38! He's #2 on US iTunes atm! :o Incredible. It's a good song too. I hope it can get as popular here as at least Find Your Love did.

Also, this is really a bit of a tangent, but the song on the Jay-Z/Kanye album that samples Flux Pavillion is close to the top 10 on US iTunes from cherry-picking. This is a big thing really, seeing as it's dubstep and everything, and this is the US where that type of music doesn't do well in the mainstream at the moment.

I hope David Guetta can get top 10 on iTunes. I think the top 10 effect will help him so much.

But considering the market is in such a state lately, it's quite an unfair comparison. Weren't album sales back then generally higher?

EDIT: I wish it was 'Marvin's Room' doing what 'Headlines' is doing. I know 'Headlines' is the first single, but MR is so much better :(

The most unfair thing about that comparison was probably that 50 Cent's album was much more expensive than Lady Gaga's (which is ironic, given what his rap name is ).

About Drake, I like both songs, so any success is good. I was expecting Marvin's Room to be doing that well when it was released though. It did extremely well for a promo single, but given the hype, and the general quality of the song, I was expecting it to possibly go to #1 on iTunes. But at least he's having success now. I think he's got another #1 album on his hands.

Guetta and Sia are now 11 and not FAR behind... please get that top 10... best he has ever done!

I've only heard the 1:30 iTunes preview of 'Titanium' and I already think it's better than 'Little Bad Girl'. Hopefully this new Guetta track will become a massive hit. Easily his best single since 'Who's That Chick?'.

Surely you should listen to the whole thing before declaring it his best single since whatever?

Today's top 100 update (8pm positions)

Two new entries today. A third album track off American rappers' Jay-Z and Kanye West's collaborative album 'Watch The Throne' has entered at #88 - 'Why I Love You', featuring noted flop band Mr Hudson & The Library (they got to #53 in 2007 with 'Too Late, Too Late', though Mr Hudson on his own got to #2 in 2009 with 'Supernova' (feat. Kanye West)). American rapper S.mouse (a.k.a. Australian comedian Chris Lilley - it's a TV thing), best known for releasing the highest selling rap single of all time, 'Slap My Elbow', enters at #95 with his new single 'Squashed Nigga'. Re-entries today come from Paramore ('Monster', #84), Tracy Chapman ('Fast Car', #92) and Eminem feat. Rihanna ('Love The Way You Lie', #96). Dr. Dre, The Notorious B.I.G., U2, Six D and Semisonic have entries dropping out to accommodate the 5 top 100 entries.
