Firstly, I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, and I'm not sure where to find something relating to this topic.

Melanie C's 'Think About It' CD single is available through Townsend, and is being bought by her fans from all over the world. When a fan asked her on Twitter whether all sales would count towards the UK's official chart, her team replied...

yes (pre) orders from Townsend count for the UK charts and it doesn't matter where the customer comes from!

Is this really the case? :o It seems strange that a UK chart could be influenced by buyers from all over the world... but maybe it's an aspect of the chart I've been unaware of? http://www.boardaloud.co.uk/images/smilies/shrug.gif

I believe sales on UK iTunes count if you registered with a UK address, regardless of where you actually live? I may be wrong though.
Overseas sales don't count towards the UK charts. The single has to be delivered to a UK address and this applies to both digital and physical sales.

That's interesting to know, thanks!

Does someone know if it works the other way: imported sales, do they count toward the importing country? Or are they simply ignored?

I buy many albums from the UK, surely it must count somewhere...

I'd imagine the sales would just be ignored but I don't know how the Swiss chart compilers would treat the albums you buy. I doubt they'd even know about them...

Maybe Melanie's Team get them sent to a uk address and then forward them on?

Thanks for you reply. Indeed, they won't know about them...

So I assume it's the same for the UK charts: imports from Ireland, Australia... are not considered.

Not unless they are sold through a UK based store.

Thanks for your reply, Robbie, that's what I thought. I actually asked OCC on their Facebook page, but they ignored my post lol. It doesn't seem they have an email to contact them about general questions.
If a title is imported but sold in a UK store then it should count towards the UK chart.

Got a reply from the OCC:

Hello again Jay. I have been told that international sales do not count towards our Official Charts. Sorry. Thanks for your question.

So it's irrelevant that it's a UK store.
