Gary Barlow will be releasing a cover/new version of Massive Attack's 1998 UK #10 hit 'Teardrop' on 13th November (presumably it'll be out to download a day earlier) as the official Children In Need single for 2011.

It features a bunch of British urban acts including Ed Sheeran, N-Dubz, Tinchy Stryder and Wretch 32. vidcapper will LOVE this. Produced by Labrinth.

We obviously haven't heard this yet, so here's the video for the brilliant original version in the meantime:

It may be a bit early to predict this I guess, but I'd say it's already a pretty certain #1.

(If it does get there it'll be my 2011 birthday #1. Even if it is a crap version that's a great song to be at #1 on my birthday! And Ed Sheeran is involved with it as well which is a good thing).

UPDATE:

It's being released under the name 'The Collective' (creative!). Here it is:

Joke, the most certain no.1 of the year along with One Direction!

Why do they have to cover such an amazing song? :(

Obviously I can't really judge it yet as I haven't heard it, but the likes of Gary Barlow, N Dubz and Ed Sheeran being involved certainly isn't a good thing.

If Gary Barlow has anything to do with this, it'll be a definite number one and it'll have the sob story and performance on X Factor

It'll reach #1 for certain. If Gary Barlow and N-Dubz don't pull in sales, then I'm sure Labrinth, radio airplay, the addition of Ed Sheeran and the fact it's sure to be performed on X-Factor will pull in sales.

I'm excited to hear it, although I wonder how many of the 'cast' they'll pull in to appear on the X-Factor. I can't imagine Wretch 32 and Tinchy Stryder making appearances.

I know I should probably wait until I hear it but...CIN, pretty much a guaranteed XF performance, well known song already, well known artists - this looks to be the most obvious number 1's of the year imo

It appears Gary doesn't actually sing on this track, he just organised it. I'm actually really interested to see how a rap version of Teardrop will work (or not work as the case may be).

It's going to be released under a collective name (like Helping Haiti) but they haven't decided on the name yet. The title will be updated accordingly when a name has been decided upon. The video for it has already been shot apparently, you can already tell it'll just be yet another clone of the original Band Aid video though :P

This is one of those songs that did rubbish when it was released. I mean, why wasn't this number 1 seeing as everyone and their goldfish loves it? I dislike covers and this will be no different. Number 1 though.

Really interesting, contemporary Children In Need single. Presumably a #1 although I can't help but think how similar things have crashed and burned in the past after mass hype (anyone remember It's Only Rock & Roll in 1999?). Those acts are all pretty much cream of the crop of British music though and Teardrop is an incredible song so I'm far more excited about hearing this than I usually would be a CiN single, and it's been a couple of years since the last urban ensemble type single (I Got Soul!).

Pretty certain that Ed Sheeran will be singing the existing bits of Teardrop, oddly I can already imagine his voice on it.

Um, as we all know, this is the guy that produced Pass Out, Frisky and Wonderman, and also Let it Go for Devlin and On My Own for Yasmin, and he did that remix of Do It Like a Dude for Jessie J. I'm sure the song will sound fine if he's making it.

Is Ed Sheeran urban?

Depends if you would class his new single as urban, although imo I don't think he is. I think he is a singer songwriter

Is Ed Sheeran urban?

According to Radio 1Xtra he is. They playlist all his songs aswell, and they chart him in the 1Xtra chart (where he's been in the top 3 for like 3 months now ): http://www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra/chart/singles/

But I wouldn't consider him urban, personally. Maybe some of his songs, but not The A Team.

And I found a rap (sort of ) song which samples Teardrop, if anybody is interested:

Is Ed Sheeran urban?

Not really but he's very strongly associated with the urban crowd.

Ed Sheeran's current stuff is not urban at all, but all of his mates are all from the urban music background. Plus the mixtape he released at the turn of the year was predominately urban.

'You Need Me, I Don't Need You' is sort of urban in that it's rapped not sung - but yes, apart from that and the No.5 Collaborations Project EP most of his own output is distinctly not urban at all.

He has appeared as a featured artist on songs by a load of rappers though, for example 'Hush Little Baby' from Wretch 32's album.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. You DONT just cover Massive Attack. I know Newton did and I liked his version but, no. Just, no. Teardrop is just the most moving, haunting song I know.
I'd like Ellie Goulding to sing it.

As much as I love Ellie, I've never loved an artist like her, but just no Massive Attack covers, not even from Ellie. Teardrop is too good to be covered. Its a very blinkered view but this song means so much to me.
