Btw, I was talking about the digital chart. The official US chart includes airplay.

Infact, here's the #1s of 2010 in the US in the sales chart: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_numbe..._of_2010_(U.S.)

There's actually a LOT of one-weekers there aswell, and they do everything on air, on sale. As you can see the artists I mentioned did get #1s in that chart (Glee Cast actually got 2, and Taylor Swift 3), and there were some massive drops. Only Ke$ha, Katy Perry and Eminem managed long runs at #1, and that's a chart where every single song is on air, on sale.

Yes, their sales are very front-loaded but they don't peak at #1. That's the difference.

They don't peak at #1 on the 'real' chart (which is completely twisted and inaccurate) but a few of them have made #1 on Digital Songs.

To be honest I'd rather have loads of one-week #1s than constant 4+ weekers. It'd be better if we didn't get ones with chart runs like that of 'Swagger Jagger' or 'Promises' of course though.

It's not entirely true that every song released in the US is On Air/On Sale. For example, Kelly Rowland's Motivation was sent to radio a few weeks before it was released to iTunes I believe. They released it when the video came out. Admittedly that's just one example but if Kelly did it then I'm sure a few others have too?

Perhaps. It's very rare though. I know with What's My Name?, it leaked onto the Internet, so radio stations started playing it a couple of weeks before its release aswell.

The two biggest hits release this year were available on the on air on sale policy, and that's no coincidence. Labels seem to prioritise chart peaks over sales, and that doesn't really make sense. Sure, it helps when you can bill your artist on the basis that they've had a #1, but this is a business... Suppressing downloads leads to a loss in revenue. I know singles aren't exactly highly profitable, but when they're not readily available it encourages piracy. Not a good idea.

You've hit the nail on the head there. The record industry basically wants to have its cake AND eat it. You can hold back releases for a month to build up demand for a higher debut / peak, but you can't then turn around and beat people with a stick for illegally downloading the song you don't want people to have yet because they wanted it but you wouldn't let them have. It just doesn't make any sense whatsoever! The sad truth is that peaks mean more to record companies/artists than total sales (at least on the singles chart) because a higher debut/peak = more exposure = more albums = more tour revenue = £££.

^ It's indeed true that a lot of the biggest hits of this year are on air, on sale. Looking at the 10 biggest songs of the year:

1. Adele - Someone Like You - on air, on sale

2. Jessie J ft B.o.B. - Price Tag - this was actually a held back release

3. LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem - on air, on sale

4. Bruno Mars - Grenade - held back

5. Pitbull - Give Me Everything - on air, on sale

6. Jennifer Lopez - On The Floor - held back

7. Adele - Rolling In The Deep - held back

8. Rihanna - S&M - on air, on sale

9. Lady Gaga - Born This Way - on air, on sale

10. Bruno Mars - Lazy Song - on air, on sale

So that's 6 out of 10. Although Born This Way and Give Me Everything were the only ones not from albums.

Explaining myself about Price Tag (although I've already had to explain this so many times I swear!), it was actually on the radio for quite a while before its release. I myself, heard the song on New Years Day on the Big Top 40 Show, and there was a Music Week article somewhere that was saying that Radio 1Xtra and Capital had played the song back in 2010.

Its release date was the day that her label decided to do all of their releases on air, on sale, rather than the day it was sent to radio.

Eric, Jessie Performed Price Tag in plenty of places before it was released.

Well, that aswell, but on air, on sale is about radio, I believe, and it was on the radio months before it was released.

Is Pixie back at number 1, or has my iTunes reverted?!

Nope she is number 1 on my feed too :o

Edited by Rob Summers

Er the feed might have reverted as Snow Patrol are 16, Jealousy album version is 50 and Ben Howard is 53

Edited by Rob Summers

Yeah, looks like it has, as it has Example at 6 and Christina at 7
yeah, pop bars numbers seem to have reverted too... almost exactly what they were at around 4pm
Jessie J was and wasn't OA/OS. It wasn't because it had been played but then it came out the week it was introduced so was pulled forward by at least 3-4 weeks...

So it could have reverted for everyone

Yes. Its original release date was the week after the BRITs (I guess the record label's original strategy was to release it that week so it'd benefit from all the media attention of her winning the award and get big sales).

I'm amazed at how Turn Me On is hanging around. I could see it even getting 3 weeks in the top 40 now!

Also, this is rather off-topic, but just incase any of you haven't heard yet, Someone Like You has got to #1 in the US! Adele is the first ever British artist to get two US #1s from the same album.

19 01 Adele - Someone Like You

01 02 Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera - Moves Like Jagger

03 03 Foster The People - Pumped Up Kicks

16 06 Lady Gaga - You And I

04 07 Bad Meets Evil featuring Bruno Mars - Lighters

18 08 Cobra Starship Featuring Sabi - You Make Me Feel

09 09 Pitbull featuring Ne-Yo, AfroJack & Nayer - Give Me Everything

Incredible for Adele, and so deserved, SLY and RITD are two of the best songs of the year by far, if not the two best.

So happy Collide is still #4 considering Pixie is #12 & Sats are #36 on radio where as Leona is #67! :o Really hope radio support builds. TV had been great so far, only 2 weeks but #16 last week and looks like #3 this week hopefully so thats positive at least. :D

Set Fire to the Rain is doing VERY well on just cherry-picking there aswell. Apparently it's being used in an advert, which is why it's top 30 on iTunes atm.

Also, seems like the feed has gone back to normal. At least for me, since I have Maroon 5 back at #1.

Eric, Set Fire To The Rain is #27 on US iTunes! I find that incredible, it has to be the 3rd single over there, and can we have a video! :heehee:

Repeat of JR on now with Adele on right now and performance coming up (ITV1) so may see a little boost for TT again.
