I see from the 'Have you ever...' question, at least some of you are honest about your piracy, if not because of it. :P

I only tend to when I feel like I shouldn't have to fork out for the song, for instance if I want an mp3 of a song I already own in mp4 format but can't be bothered converting it. I do tend to buy most of my songs (and almost all of my albums) because at the end of the day 99p isn't a lot now and then to keep the music industry alive.
I think a high proportion of music is downloaded illegally. People arent going to pay for something when they can get it for free and its easily available on the internet.

Hence the problem - downloading music illegally doesn't feel as criminal as, say, looting during a riot, but that's only because of the far lesser likelihood of getting caught.

I'm not going to lie, about 99% of music I download is illegal. I don't download stuff legally mainly for the reason that I prefer to have a physical CD for my money, ie. something I can actually hold. In the increasing liklihood that there is no physical cd single, I may be tempted to download it legally yes.

However of the music I have on my iTunes about 80% of it is stuff I own on CD. I tend to illegally download to start with (using it as a method of assessing its worth) and if it is worth purchasing, I will do.

I tend to buy singles off iTunes. They're cheap and I can't be bothered to search the internet for numerous 192 Kbps files. Albums? Usually download a leak and then purchase the physical copies of whichever I like. BASICALLY A MASSIVE THIEF.

I only really use illegal downloads if an album has leaked that I want to listen to or a song by an artist I like leaks that won't be released for a while.

I always delete them once I get my own copy. I also download bonus tracks for albums that are not on itunes.

Sadly, I illegally download due to time contraints.

For example, I bought Florence's new single because it was arrived as it was played. Unlike, for example, Kelly Clarkson's new single.

Pretty much this.

I do love buying albums on physical, especially if they have lovely artwork/packaging.

over 90 % unfortunately

why?

coz we don't have iTunes, or any other store where can u pay for the songs what u wanna.

i only download live performances illegally, or i did until most were made available on itunes. i would be intrigued to see what the percentage is - to see how many more million sellers we could have had, or to see which artists lose out because of it.

Aye if an album has nice packaging/artwork and I've already fallen in love with it illegally then I usually buy it just to 'have' and to support the artist even though I only really use it to import onto iTunes. Plus even though it's cheaper to buy an album online I always feel like I'm being ripped off because it's not really tangible.

I do tend to buy a lot of singles on iTunes though.

I only ever get illegally what I can't buy legally in this country (or would have to spend an actual fortune importing from Scandinavia).

I usually buy it when it's available legally, with Weeds. I have up to 701 illegally and I have been buying the seasons as they are released like Season 5 which I bought yesterday and was only released on Monday. If it ain't worth paying for I delete it, if it's brilliant I'll shell out to buy/import.

That's my defence and I'm sticking to it.

Over 90%. I've only ever purchased 1 download which was Nicola's 'Beat Of My Drum' I prefer Physical CDs which I still buy a decent amount of it I really like the stuff or support the artist.

To be honest I don't think there would be any difference. If it were not possible to illegally download I don't think sales would increase by more than a marginal amount. Most people who do download illegally (and only illegally) won't suddenly pay for it, they'd just go without.

I know if I were not able to download illegally I would spent a lot less on music than I do.

I illegalling downloaded Ellie Goulding 'Lights', as I knew a rerelease was going to happen but i wanted the songs, so when Bright Lights came out, I bought it on physical. I Youtube2mp3 songs which I know will never be available to download, but I usually always buy singles off itunes. I may occassionally download an album for free out of curiosity, if I like it, I'll buy the physical, if I dont, I'll delete it. Like PJ Harvey, god knows how she won the MP because I thought her album and voice were horrible.
when I have money on my account, I buy legally off Itunes, but often I do rip it off youtube and convert it to mp3, I do think alas that a large percentage, maybe even 70% just either can't be bothered to wait with held back releases or just don't wanna pay money, as a collector of Now albums, I usually wait for that to come out to get a song I quite like, but don't like enough to buy, to buy physically and get for free - I'm not sure many are like me for that  but I guess it's a factor

I get my music for free from my guy , but he gets albums/EPs as freebies from the recording companies so it's all legal. I ocasionally buy an album myself or download singles from iTunes (when I'm impatient to wait for him to get it for me). And most people buy me CDs as presents, so it's all above board.
I tend to download albums illegally so I can see if they're good, but only by artists I don't already like. I've never downloaded a song legally in my life, I just wait for the album to come out. If albums ever start not coming in physicals I doubt I'll buy any music legally so I hope the physical continues.
