Unplayed Piano and The Blower's Daughter were also great, the latter could probably be a similar sized smash with an X Factor performance too to be honest, it's got about as much 'classic status' as Cannonball.

I think you may be right about that - 'The Blower's Daughter' is actually back at #172 and #193 presumably just because of the 'Cannonball' performance!

Snow Patrol's Run is back at #225.

Second version of 'Cannonball' #255.

Ah, I didn't realise Run was top 100 as well. Good to see that getting anotehr boost but I wish it was the Snow Patrol version which is far better, it's a shame 'Run' will probably end up being associated with Leona by future generations if it's remembered at all :(

Yeah it'll definitely be remembered, Leona's put it on the map. :heehee:

Absolutely love both versions.

If things stay the same Collide, Jar Of Hearts and Feel So Close will be out of top 10 tomorrow with Dappy, Derulo and (hopefully) Morrison all going top 10.

'9 Crimes' is easily his best. I remember it charted quite well originally on iTunes but dropped rather quickly, oui?
i really hope nicola roberts can make a good dent in the top 40 tomoro. im doubtful it will outpeak Beat of My Drum but its done ok on pre-orders

Ah, '9 Crimes'!

'Rootless Tree' is rather lovely too.

As someone who isn't really skilled in economics but is doing it for a level, I can see sort of where you're coming from, but I believe you may have phrased unintentionally in the wrong way. I think what you mean is that the song could get more sales due to it being able to appeal to a larger market.

This could be because while Avril Lavigne is a well known artist who has had a few successful albums and is more current compared to Damien Rice and has been able to build a fanbase so most of the "market" that the avril lavigne song is suitable or has been marketed for will have already got it.

However, with an artist like Damien Rice who had one successful era and whose songs are as you said more MOR and not as current, a song like cannonball will be able to sell more because firstly, a performance will introduce a new generation of music buyers to Cannonball. Also the fact that O was a successful and critically well received album means that people will be tempted to buy songs from it as they will be tempted to listen to and judge so-called critically great music. Also, with Damien Rice being from the so-called singer songwriter genre, more people won't know him than with avril and this means they will be able to judge the song and they will buy the song just based on the fact it's a good song and not that it is by their favourite artist.

That's it. It's interesting, how some songs are more affected by performances than others. Not many people will have had Cannonball, but they are getting it now. The performance was done to make it

However, something like Make You Feel My Love is still affected a lot, even by a small performance, even after selling so much. It must have a greater affect on the audience, simply because of the song. Although that's getting into fanbase stuff vs MOR or Classic territory.

It makes sense in my head.

People will buy the song from the back of a performance generally because it either reminds them of the song or because a different take on it makes them appreciate it more. People aren't likely to buy something they hear for the first time. It's why people always give the excuse that shit that has no other promotion or airplay doesn't benefit, because 95% of the audience are hearing it for the first time. How many people buy songs after they've heard them only once?

Definitely, especially for me I find i need to hear a song at least a few times to really get it in my head and click with me, and then in result purchase it, there are very few songs I hear first time and completely love.

I buy songs after hearing them just once all the time. In fact I regularly buy songs just after only hearing the 30/90 second preview on iTunes.

Really? Yeah everyone's different really, there are obviously some people out there who need to listen to a song at least 100 times before they buy it thats why some of the oldest songs are still around the top 100 iTunes chart :heehee:

i cant download songs on one listen, because a lot of the songs i like it takes a few listens for me to get into. i find that some songs that are instant i tire of quite quickly and then if i have downloaded them i feel like ive wasted money....

Oh I do as well. But I think that's a hell of a lot more likely to be a trait for people like us who have such a high interest in music, but not so with the public in general. I made this point in relation to a different discussion last week but if you look at any "this weeks purchases" thread and 90% of them will have been that weeks releases whereas that is far from the case with the actual chart where a performance of Chasing Cars by a contestant on a talent show will see another 5,000 people buy it. The majority of the X-factor audience aren't going to buy an Avril Lavigne or Bon Jovi song they've never heard before, but will buy something they know and have forgotten about that a contestant sings, or a song performed by an artist as it's a different take on a song they already know.

Run  #73

Missed any X Fcator related top 100 songs anyone?

It does indeed tend to be the semi-forgotten but still well-known songs that get the biggest boosts after XF. Tends to be songs that appeal to a slightly older audience as well. This is probably what it is about Cannonball as a song which made me think it'd go top 10 after the performance (even though the performance wasn't actually that good anyway).
I wonder what will be the first of the new releases that show up highest first, Dappy been avaialble for pre-order for a good while he'll be pretty high.

His is an EP rather than a single though so he'll take a while to show up on the songs feed.

I think I Won't Let You Go will have its pre-orders on the songs feed (if it was even up for pre-order?) as it's marked as a single on iTunes, although it has 3 tracks rather than 2. So I suspect that'll be the first to show up with Jason and Dappy behind.

Thats true Bre, i think he will show up highest first though, we'll see. Really hope James Morrison goes top 10 with I Wont Let You Go, really looking forward to his new album, definitely one of my favourite british male artists.

It also tends to be ballads or slower, emotional and meaningful songs aswell that get a big boost. When upbeat, fast, happy songs get performed, they usually don't increase in sales very much.

This. It's an absolutely beautiful track. I love the demo aswell. He does sound rather sadistic on the demo mind.
