I've only just got online in the last half hour but I've downloaded my album which is called "Instead I'm On The Avenue Where Nobody Goes...". :D

Yet to start listening but here's hoping there's some good discoveries made here. ^_^

With the way my album has been mixed, I'm guessing that I have received Hitstatics CD! They've all been mixed so it sounds like one long CD. Very nicely done too.

My review is yet to come though. Then I will give my proper guess at who I believe it to be! :D

EDIT: Oh FFS. It includes that Sak Noel song, whoever did it! :puke:

Hitstastic está muy loco.

What the f***.

Yo estoy mas loco.

(Not that it was mine... or was it? :kink:)

Flooding The Award Show

1. A pulsing electro opening track with a pounding bass, I like the 80s influence and the bleeping melody reminds me of a mix between PPK's Resurrection and something Brandy might have sampled on her 2004 album. The vocals are quite understated and hidden beneath the production but I think it works well and it's a decent opener. 8.5/10

2. A near seven minute track now, so does it measure up to the likes of Believe Again? Another electro song with handclap percussion and an atmospheric intro before a very crisp female vocal comes in. And I'm pleased to say that I like this one a lot, the and swirling production blends well with the sultry breathy vocals and I naturally love the arrival of the strings! Oddly, I could imagine Nero doing a dubstep cover of this and putting it out as a single, the vocal is very Promises/Guilt like! Definitely one to keep. 9/10

3. I know this one! Warrant by Foster The People. Torches is actually a really good album and deserves more success than it's had so far. This is very summery and poppy, like most of their output, although it's probably only my 4th or 5th favourite on the album after Pumped Up Kicks, Helena Beat and Houdini. Nevertheless, it's a nice inclusion here. 8.5/10

4. Wow! Some sort of mash up/interpolation of Robyn's Hang With Me with the backing music from Taio Cruz's Dynamite in a manipulated vocal style reminiscent to Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek. It sounds instantly familiar and aids my enjoyment of the track although I prefer the first half to the second half. The final line suggests to me that this is by JJ seeing as it also appears in Let Them and actually the vocals match too... 8/10

5. Some indie with female vocals now and I don't recognise the artist behind this one. The 'yelping' sound in the background is vaguely reminiscent of M83's recent Midnight City but honestly this song doesn't do much for me, as soon as the vocals fade out, musically it's just the sort of indie that I don't appreciate. 5/10

6. I really like this one. After the electro opening and the last song, this is a pleasant change in direction – a female singer/songwriter with guitar, similar musically to Pernilla Andersson (Pavel would love it) with folky/country undertones. The singer has a lovely voice and the song is incredibly short, sweet and charming. 9/10

7. Moving back to an electro direction after the previous song and yes, it's more female vocals! Clearly a playlist tailored to the BJSC crowd! This song rattles along nicely and I really like the vocal style and harmonies. Nice and upbeat, although not overly catchy. I shall be returning to this one. 8.5/10

8. A drum heavy intro for this one and then the guitars come in. It builds up nicely and then the inevitable female vocals flood in, although later joined by male vocals. The melody in this song massively reminds me of the music in one of the levels in Super Mario 64 (one of the boss levels I think). Anyway, this is very instant and rather brilliant. 9/10

9. The second one I recognise and hurrah for the inclusion of this! The Pierces are so damn underrated (well apart from their recent UK top five album I guess!) This song, You'll Be Mine, is one of the two major highlights of the album along with Glorious. It's an absolutely hypnotising and indeed glorious retread of a late 60s/early 70s folky sound that sounds really reminiscent of The Mamas & The Papas or Fleetwood Mac. This song will always remind me of a stunning place in Wales called Llangollen as it's where I was when I first heard this song, and it created a perfect atmosphere actually. 9.5/10

10. Back to the 'alternative electro' sound now and this is another great discovery! Sort of sounds like a female MGMT, or perhaps it's Arcade Fire? I haven't heard any of their albums but this could be an album track of theirs. If it is then perhaps it's time that I did have a listen to them! Very melodic and enjoyable and another brilliant inclusion, love the way it fades out/down as well! 9/10

11. Some male vocals now! Keeping with the overriding electro-indie theme, this one also seems to have some 80s influence, particularly in the chorus with the synth backing. I'm not bowled over by this one but it's pleasant enough and isn't a disgrace to the compilation by any means. 7/10

12. Back to the happy indie-pop now, this is very lo-fi and hard to hear the vocals in places but the melody is great, very uplifting and joyous. Not so keen on the huge instrumental section in the middle of the track, seems to go on for a little too long but I guess it made me anticipating the vocals coming back in more. Really good song with a couple of niggling annoyances. 8.5/10

13. A return to the hand-clap beats for this one and an interesting choice of main instrument in what sounds like a marimba! A nice, thoughtful female vocal and the strings really add atmosphere and depth to the track. It's a really interesting and different listen. 8/10

14. The third song that I already know – He's Not A Boy by The Like. This is similar to what The Pipettes might have done on their debut album and is therefore instantly excellent. I actually considered sending this to BJSC once but didn't love it *quite* enough, although admittedly it would have made an interesting entry! The bridge is the best part of the song melody wise although the chorus and production sounds straight of either the 60s or alternatively an Austin Powers film soundtrack. Love it! 9/10

15. An organ opening to what soon evolves into an indie-pop song with female vocals. This isn't dissimilar in atmosphere to the previous song so makes for a nice flow. More swirling strings in the background and the organ gives it a strangely downbeat tone in places before the guitars pick it back up again, it's a really nice layered track and I love the vocals and melody! 9/10

16. Again, this is very much keeping to the theme of the last few songs. Happy female indie-pop which would sound perfect on a sunny day on the beach, or alternatively at a 60s throwback night. Seeing as their name is mentioned in this song, I can only assume that this is Swedish girl group Those Dancing Days! Not my favourite song of theirs but definitely keeps with the tone and flow of the back half of this compilation. 8/10

17. The closing track, more heavy percussion which leads into a male vocalist and he sounds really familiar to me actually. I don't recognise the song but I'm sure I'll recognise the act once it's revealed. Nice melody and memorable, catchy lyrics but probably not one I'll rush back to. I can see why it was chosen as the closer though, rounds things off nicely without being too similar to the last few tracks but keeping some similar traits nonetheless. 7.5/10

Overall: A perfect surfing soundtrack? A well put together mix of sunny contemporary indie-pop, 60s influenced hand clapping and the odd electro song thrown in for good measure, particularly at the start. Almost all with female vocals too although I suspect this was more because of the fact that this CD Swap was held in the BJSC forum, notoriously against male artists.

I loved the inclusions of The Like, Foster The People and in particular The Pierces and tracks 2, 6, 8, 10 and 15 were my favourite discoveries and those I'll be most likely to go back to. Although with only one song that I wasn't too keen on, I might as well leave the whole compilation on my iPod, it has a really nice flow to it and will sound great on a sunny day.

Everything about it suggests that this belongs to RabbitFurCoat and I'll be incredibly surprised if it turns out to be somebody else's. Thank you for a wonderful compilation and a great listen packed with new discoveries!

The vocals are quite understated and hidden beneath the production but I think it works well and it's a decent opener. 8.5/10

The Knife 'Silent Shout' - When I saw you'd got my album this was one of the songs I thought you might not like so it's pleasing that you do! It's also the opener to their 2006 album of the same name, although it pretty much passed me by at the time, it wasn't until the third and fourth singles that I really became interested. It's gone on to become one of my favourite songs of theirs though, I adore how understated the vocals in it are. I'm quite glad you didn't recognise who it was, whilst in a way The Knife are quite distinctive they're also very different, this is nothing like the two songs of theirs that have been BJSC entries.

The Golden Filter 'Stardust' - Another act that have previously had a BJSC top 10 finish now. Their album came out last year and it was one I downloaded more out of curiosity than expectation, bu I think it's a brilliant album and was in my top 10 of last year. This is my favourite on the album though, and I think crisp very much sums up the vocals. A lot of the time with this kind of music you can't always understand the lyrics but I think they're fairly distinctive on this. The album is reasonably similar in a lot of places, my other favourites being Thunderbird and Dance Around The Fire, I was going to post links but Youtube has severely slowed down my laptop!

Foster The People 'Warrant' - This is one of my favourite songs of the year, when I first heard it and realised it was the albums last song I didn't expect much with the long intro but as soon as the song kicked in I loved it, it's so joyous and catchy, almost impossible not to sing along too. Their album is one that's really surprised me, I never expected it to be as good as it is.

jj 'Die Tonight' - The first of three songs in here that have been number one in my Personal Chart. I loved jj's first album but last years second was nowhere near as good so the mixtape they released at new year, sampling various hip-hop songs was again something I downloaded out of curiousity and again was better than I expected it to be. This is my highlight from it, for what it is I really like 'Dynamite' anyway, and the instrumentation this samples really suits the song well. This was also the song where I got the title of the album from (which I should probably stop doing as people will too easily guess that it's mine!) "this flow will flood the award show". Let Them/Kill Them follows this on the album.

The Joy Formidable 'Austere' - A shame you don't like this although you like far more than I'd anticipated when I saw you had it yesterday! This is probably their most accessible song to be honest, well their most accessible good song at least, they're generally stray as close to rock as an indie band can really.

Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins 'You Are What You Love' - Well even if it's taken over five years I'm pleased you've finally been introduced to this gem! :drama: It's a wonderful pop song, and it's about as poppy as the album gets, it's a wonderful blend of styles and is probably as close to country music I can tolerate really, slight influences!

School of Seven Bells 'Heart Is Strange' - I suppose I did tailor the playlist for BJSC, I imagine if I didn't have a year long break from the contest then four or five of this CD would've been sent by me at some point over the last twelve months. They're one act of a rather sizeable proportion of my music library that I disovered from Dandy*s personal chart, although I didn't like their 2008 material that I heard anywhere near as much as their album from last year, this and 'ILU' were a great pair of singles.

Guillemots 'Last Kiss' - This is by some distance my highlight of a rather disappointing and patchy second album, and really makes a great case for Fyfe singing less of their material, as this is the most Aristazabal ever gets.

The Pierces 'You'll Be Mine' - Another great song from this year, I've never quite warmed to their other songs as much but this song really is wonderfully beautiful.

Arcade Fire 'Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)' - Good guess! :D This is another which I'm sure I'd have almost definitely sent to BJSC a year ago. Regine really does have a beautiful voice which Arcade Fire should use more often, this is by far my favourite track off last years The Suburbs, and has probably grown to second overall for me behind the rather obvious Rebellion. I'm not sure how much of their material you would like as a lot of it is probably similar to their singles which I doubt you'd like that much. However if I were to pick one song from each album I'd go with In The Backseat off Funeral (also sung by Regine but very different, much more stripped back, I've seen it described on occasion as like Bjork or Kate Bush and I suppose that's reasonable accurate, although I love it and don't really like either of those), Antichrist Television Blues or The Well And The Lighthouse from Neon Bible and I'm not really sure from The Suburbs so I'd go with the those three!

11. Some male vocals now! Keeping with the overriding electro-indie theme, this one also seems to have some 80s influence, particularly in the chorus with the synth backing. I'm not bowled over by this one but it's pleasant enough and isn't a disgrace to the compilation by any means. 7/10

Van She 'Kelly' - This does rely very highly on the synths, their album is fairly similar but I generally find it quite dull and then every so often something pops up which just has a bit more to it, this is one of those although if it were a minute shorter I don't think I'd complain.

The Go! Team 'Buy Nothing Day' - This was one of just three that had you stumped in my round of Never Mind The BuzzJacks and if you don't like that part of it, it's probably not a surprise that it didn't click with you three months ago! I said then I included it because it was my favourite song of the year and I can't say anything has since changed my stance on the song. Whilst I'd probably agree that the instumental part isn't as strong I do still love it, it's one of a few songs I could listen to for ages and not get bored of it, I adore the vocals on it (which are provided by Beth from Best Coast who I sent to BJSC) and they make a refreshing change from the normal vocals from Ninja who I do like but I think these suit The Go! Team's music a lot more.

13. A return to the hand-clap beats for this one and an interesting choice of main instrument in what sounds like a marimba! A nice, thoughtful female vocal and the strings really add atmosphere and depth to the track. It's a really interesting and different listen. 8/10

Glasser 'Home' - Glasser is a female soloist who I'd only heard one song by until Ben sent her song Mirrorage to Unknown Pleasures at the turn of the year which made me want to listen to her album. I'm not usually one to enjoy solo female albums all the way through but 'Ring' is a great album, I think the instrumentation on it is brilliant, especially on this.

Love it! 9/10

The Like 'He's Not A Boy' - This reminds me of The Pipettes too, and I too was going to send this to BJSC. If I remember correctly this is what I'd have sent if I didn't have a break when I was a bit busier, I don't think I intended to spend quite so long away but at uni I never really found the time to enter anyway, I found it hard enough to do Unknown Pleasures where there was two weeks to listen! I'd say it's a shame they've never had any success but everything else of theirs I've heard hasn't been anywhere near as good anyway.

Camera Obscura 'Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken' - from their 2006 album 'Let's Get Out Of This Country' this song was a reply to Lloyd Cole's 'Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken'. They've been produced by members of, and toured with, Belle and Sebastian and they do in ways remind me of them, their music is rather lovely and very twee. It's very easy to listen to but can be so uplifting.

Those Dancing Days 'Those Dancing Days' - This is indeed Those Dancing Days with a self-titled song, not something which seems as common as it used to be, although that might be because I grew up following the charts when there was a lot more dance acts in it where it would be most common. I sent I'll Be Yours as my favourite song from their current album whilst this is my favourite track from their debut 'In Our Space Hero Suits'. I do think they have the slightly odd trait of sounding fairly distinctive but sounding like a lot else too.

Hot Chip & Peter Gabriel 'Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa' - This is a cover of Vampire Weekend's single from their debut album, a very African influenced song which includes the lyric "it feels so unnatural, Peter Gabriel too", so on this cover version he added the lyric "it feels so unnatural, to sing your own name" after it. I'm perhaps slightly surprised you didn't twig but then if you aren't familiar with the song and therefore know it's a cover it's probably not something that's immediately obvious! This is one of my favourite cover versions of recent times, it managed to stay quite true to the original despite Hot Chip's instrumental being very different at the same time, and Peter's vocals suit the song really well.

Everything about it suggests that this belongs to RabbitFurCoat and I'll be incredibly surprised if it turns out to be somebody else's. Thank you for a wonderful compilation and a great listen packed with new discoveries!

To be honest when I compiled this I never listened to it fully to realise it was quite as female heavy as it is. I picked a shortlist of songs which was I think 25, with the only criteria being that they were all songs I'd consider sending to the contest myself. Of the ones I got rid of to get it down to CD length, I actually ousted more songs with male vocals than I kept, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart went as I just couldn't decide which one song to add, I also got rid of Pallers and Belle and Sebastian, as well as Friendly Fires who only went because I didn't think they really fitted into the playlist anywhere.

I'm really pleased you got it, as I thought you'd be one of the posters who'd like it most, although I didn't quite anticipate it would be as much as you do and it's good to see you've made a lot of discoveries. Of the top 5 you mention I'd definitely recommend checking out both The Golden Filter and Jenny Lewis albums, but perhaps not Guillemots or Arcade Fire as they aren't as representative of the act. I find quite a bit of Camera Obscura's stuff a bit boring but both 'Let's Get Out Of This Country' and 'If Looks Could Kill' are also really good and quite similar to 'Lloyd...'.

Oh I'll definitely have a listen to your CD at the end RabbitFurCoat, I know about 10 of them and like them all very much so I would be very interested to hear the rest.

Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) is absolutely wondrous though, definitely my favourite Arcade Fire song. It's very Blondie, which is of course no bad thing.

To be honest when I compiled this I never listened to it fully to realise it was quite as female heavy as it is. I picked a shortlist of songs which was I think 25, with the only criteria being that they were all songs I'd consider sending to the contest myself. Interesting to read your comments behind each track Mark, will input the track titles into my iTunes now :D

I assumed it was a conscious choice to make it so female heavy seeing as I know you're not one exactly known for female artist looning! Interesting to see that that actually was Arcade Fire. Indeed I've never really clicked with any of their singles but that song was a lot more melodic to my ears and I liked it straight away. With regard to The Knife, I've actually liked quite a lot of their stuff - I can overlook the dire anomaly that was Variation of Birds! Ohhh, I take it that Jenny Lewis song is from the now legendary Rabbit Fur Coat album? :o Nope never heard the original or any incarnation of that Hot Chip song although I definitely knew I recognised that voice from somewhere!

Ever since I've done the CD Swap's on various forums - with the exception of the rock/nu-metal type one I received from Charlie a couple of years ago - I've received pop/indie compilations that I almost always end up enjoying and keeping. It's a genre that I do like, I just don't expose myself to it much which is where these online contests and things like the CD Swap come in really handy. My CD's have been sent to Pavel, Brett-Butler and yourself over the years and now funnily enough I've received one back from each as well, strange how it always seems to work out! Thanks for the recommendations, I'll see if I can find them on Spotify, Jenny Lewis in particular I can imagine enjoying a full album by.

That compilation sounds great! Will definitely give that one a listen! Heart Is Strange and Sprawl II are both excellent
Die Tonight  One of the best tracks on Kills.

Edited by The Pavl

I've just downloaded mine and have received Drömtillstånd - which I believe translates as 'Dream State' so it's a lovely sounding title.

I approve of the artwork too, very nice. Will have a listen later and report back...

I actually like my CD, I'm incredibly surprised! :D

I know quite a lot of them but it's majorly different to the europop CD that I was expecting to receive...

I really want RFC's comp too

Did everyone download their comps now? I want to read some more reviews before i post mine...

I can't wait to see who gets mine and if they like it  If they don't review it, I'll be a bit pissed off considering I put time and effort into it. But I'm sure they will, and hopefully whoever gets it makes a few great discoveries.

EDIT: Ooh, and I'll listen through for a 'final' time either later or tomorrow, depends if I'm back in time from going out later. Then my review will deffo be up tomorrow!

Edited by Liаm

I've got 'Winning, Charlie Sheen Style'. I have no idea whose it is based off the title, and haven't had a chance to listen yet, so hopefully it shall be good! ^_^

I Don't Know What The Hell To Do So I'll Go Shopping:

01| This track is fairly good, it sounds like the kind of alternative I can really get into! I always love a unique voice and this girl deffo have has it! Her voice is lovely and floaty, sadly I have no idea who it is! I'll take a stab at Austra? 8.5/10

02| Well the cover was left on, which gave away the fact it's iamamiwhoiami :P I've heard a bit of her but I've not heard this track so I don't know which one it exactly is. This again is a nice balance of alternative plus enough poppiness to keep me interested! One of the best tracks I've heard from her actually... 8/10

03| Quite dark and brooding - it reminds me of Depeche Mode or maybe some of the darker Pet Shop Boys tracks. Not normally something I'd go far but this is drawing me in somewhat. I'd like to hear more of this act! 8.5/10

04| A bit too alternative for me, but I can appreciate that it's a nice piece of music. The girl has quite a nice voice, but the track felt like it dragged on a bit even though it was under 4 minutes! 6.5/10

05| Again, cover gave away it was Gabby Young & The Animals - Ask You A Question :P Not heard it before, it's quite different but I quite like it ^_^ Definitely a good discovery for me, wish it was longer! 9/10

06| Sounds like Katzenjammer? I'm pretty sure it's not though... Anyway, I rather like it, it makes me want to yodel  Very traditional too, and it's rather melodic! Very much an act I'd like to hear more of! 9/10

07| No idea who this is. Not really my kind of thing but I kind of enjoyed it! The guy's voice drew me in quickly, but I found the song a little bit samey and dull. 7/10

08| I feel like I've heard this before? :unsure; Definitely can't put a name to it though! The song feels a bit dull to me, not in a rush to listen again tbqh. 5/10

09| Cover again... :P It's Clinigol - Cyfrinach. Quite a nice electronic track, in (I believe?) Welsh. I'd proabably like to hear a few more of their tracks. 8/10

10| Very good track! Very electronic and the male has a very good voice to draw you in with! Probably my favourite thus far! 9/10

11| Again, quite a good electronic track. This has nice female vocals and the man fits in well too! A highlight of the complilation! 8.5/10

12| Very relaxed, soothing track. And rather ambient. The voice sounds all too familar, I can't think who it is though. Lovely track though, probably my favourite on the compilation! 10/10

13| Brilliant track, very dancey with dreamy and catching vocals! I really like it, I was humming the tingly melody for ages! 9.5/10

14| Really not feeling this AT ALL. The vocal sounds annoying and also the backing track is a bit dull and repetitive. The song doesn't really go anywhere either. 3.5/10

15| Another foreign language track, 2nd in a row! This is (I think?) in Swedish and has a nice female vocal. Reminds me a bit of ET (not extremely so) - I pretty much love it! 9.5/10

16| This is very Pet Shop Boys! I quite like it, it's listenable and everything (also it sounds VERY familiar, I'm fairly sure I have heard it) but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to hear anything else by this act. 7/10

17| Beautiful backing track, I should love this! But her voice is very dull for me, there doesn't even seem to be emotion because it feels like she's trying too hard :( 6.5/10

18| Much like the last one, I'm rather taken in by the backing track but the woman's voice is pretty boring :( I can feel some emotion coming from her though. 7/10

19| Love the alternative feel to this! She has a very good voice, very much the type of singer I like. I'd be interested in maybe giving the album a listen, if she has one! 9/10

20| The act sounds SO familar, I'm sure I'll go 'OHHH!' when I see who it is! Really like this track, a nice ending to the compilation and I'd like to hear more from them! 8.5/10

Overall: A fairly consistent compilation with a nice running style. Maybe not quite as varied as I'd have liked though. I have made some brilliant discoveries at the end of the day though, I shall definitely give some of these artists a chance when the tracklist is revealed ^_^

I'm guessing this compilation is by Ghosthunter? I was at a bit of a loss, but the track that (I think) is in Welsh just made me plump for Ghosty as a prediction :P

Ooh, you know I almost sent Clinigol to BJSC :o

(Not that it's mine, sorry :P)
